Manny Ortiz i made the mistake and ignored your advise about how heavy and large this lens is.. and bought the lens!!! Damn it is so heavy! I returned the next day and lost $150 restock fee but better than losing more when i resell. I got the 85 1.2 instead and i love it. But learned my lesson to listen to Manny next time lol
Vanessa Joy is using the Canon 1Dx and the 70-200mm f2.8 in wedding photography, she is a little woman😁 and you big strong Manny has problems with the little EOS R and the 28-70!? 😂🤣 Just kidding 😂 beautiful pictures as always, and Canon RF lenses rock!!
@@sam_pnw Not sure what the point of what you are saying is. IS would be helpful on a 70-200mm at a wedding, but is mostly unnecessary for a standard zoom lens. You won't likely shoot any slower than 1/160 sec, more than fast enough to avoid the need for IS on a standard zoom.
On travels I walk around literally all day with my gripped D850 and 24-70 f/2.8 in my hand - that's heavier than this f/2 zoom on an R5/6. Don't think the weight issue is a big real world concern for many people, and if we weigh that against the convenience of not bringing a bag of primes to a wedding - well, this lens is a winner. An expensive one, sadly. Which Tamron or Sigma made it for E mount. :D
This lens is incredible. I used to shoot a 24-105mm f4 and it was pushing ISO 6400 during theatre shoots. I can now shoot at ISO 800-1600 and the photos come out so clean. No more need to change lenses and risking missing shots.
Heavy? Just imagine your gym is the world. The way to immortalize the beauty is by lifting it up and press the button. Shoot it left handed 10 reps and shoot it right handed 10 reps. Gimme 100 sets. Get buff and shoot beauty at the same time, all in one package at only $3000* ! *Camera is not included
I’m wedding photographer and I purchased this monster and I’m more than happy. In my country wedding ceremony takes usually around 5-10 minutes, so you don t have so much time to switch the lenses, but you’ll still get the quality and DOF of primes. I have two bodies on the straps - one with 28-70/2 and second with 135/2 (or 85/1.2 - depends on location). Yes, it is little bit heavy and because of that I detached grip from the body. I’m also not using flash, because I love the atmosphere on the pictures - than extra stop of light (F2 vs F2.8) is handy :) Thank you for review - great pictures as always :)
I really don't understand so much talk about the weight. Ok, it is a heavy lens, but 70-200/2.8 is even heavier and people use it, with much heavier bodies like 5D and 1Dx, so this setup is probably half the weight what professionals use for decades.
As a photojournalist, I always have two 5DmIV bodies with vertical grips, L glass, and occasionally 1 or 2 Speedlites on me. A 3 pound lens (basically the same weight as the EF 70-200mm 2.8 IS III) is completely within reason. IMA, the benefits outweigh any discomfort the actual weight might cause.
I’m with you. I use this lens with a 135 f2. I use it for ceremony and reception and don’t get tired. I’m 66 so a younger pro should have no problem. The look is phenomenal.
Saying canon color... Do you shoot raw? I mean it has so many good pros but color science!!! I bet you retouch all those pictures and the canon color is far gone after you finish
This lens never leaves my camera when I'm shooting weddings. Probably one of the best lenses I've ever used. I dont even use my RF 50mm 1.2 anymore. I wanna sell that lens and get the RF 85 1.2
Sitting in the same boat currently ^^ been struggling with getting the RF 50 but the 28-70 is so good, there is no justification for me to „limit“ myself with a prime when this zoom does it all. And that’s from someone who always used and loved primes.
It's pretty remarkable what Canon did with the RF glass. This lens, by all accounts I've seen, essentially replaces the bag of primes we are all used to bringing to weddings and the 70-200 saves the weight this one adds. Not to mention the bodies are lighter than DSLRs, so all in all one gets the f/2 aperture on a zoom at nearly the same total weight as before with an f/2.8 zoom.
Thanks for this review. This lens is a godsend for me. I mostly shoot in motion picture sets which have been getting dimmer and dimmer over the years and now with the widespread use of the Sony VENICE with its native iso 2500 they are even more so. With f2.8 lenses I am constantly having to shoot at iso 6400 to get reasonable shutter speeds of around 1/125s at times (which is about my lowest limit for photographing actors). Prime lenses have been a solution but given that a lot of times I just cant move much from my position zoom lenses are MUCH more preferable. With this lens I am able to retire my f1.4 and f1.2 primes. Thanks again for making quality content!
This lens performance is not worth the hype , the price and the weight. It is not sharp! Tons of distortion and the look is not similar to prime lenses.
I guess it's because you use lighter cameras like the A7iii but the usual canon wedding setup which is the 5DIV is 890g+ 24-70 2.8 is 805g = 1695g and if i switch to EOS R. EOS R is 660g + RF 28-70 is 1430g =2090g so like im getting 1 stop higher than before for increased weight by 395g is ok according to me, because for one particular downside in return i don't have to carry three different prime lenses as well as it will allow you to shoot without stopping in the shoot, which is more important in a wedding. No offence but honestly it's more about taking the picture and taking a good picture and not about the comfort of the photographer.
Thats nothing. I use the Nikkor 200mm f/2 VRII on a Nikon D850 for portraits. Total weight about 4.3kg but maybe the best portrait lens ever made. I would be happy with the weight of your combo :) Very light indeed. LOL
They now need a body worthy of that lens. I'm sure it's on the way. 3k is tough to justify unless you have a good sensor that can pick up a lot of detail.
lol your "walmart drake" is hilarious. i would say you are more like a Mini Drake. your quality is there, and in some ways you are probably better looking. he is just a little buffer and larger frame.
Keep a spray water bottle on you at all times that way you can wet your subjects to give that “just worked out” look or “it just stopped raining” kind of look it works for me here in Savannah GA! Huge fan man been following you for a while now!
Looks like a dope lens Manny, you are getting some lovely portraits with it. If the weight is too much for you bruh, just hand it it Jared Polin; he could assist you all day long!
Bruh! I shot weddings back in the late 1970's using a Hasselblad, 80mm f/2.8, a speedlight & an external speedlight battery all mounted on a Jones Bracket (look them up). I would strap the battery on the bottom of the bracket so I could set the entire rig down at times, but I'd bet it weighed in at 5-6 pounds. That's a whole lot better than what I started with which was a Rapid Omega with a modified studio strobe head powered by what was basically a small car battery carried with a shoulder strap. I ruined several suits using that rig! I'd shoot weddings with that 28-70mm f/2 lens any day of the week!
Me too, and I had a Hasselblad 500 C/M around that period. Although my main rig was a Nikon F2A + Motor Drive + Battery Pack with a 6-8 lbs Braun F900 Flash with power pack. Fast forward a bit, my Nikon D3 back in 2008 with lens trinity probably already over the size and weight limits for most. Since fast primes are trendy nowadays, I think the ~6 lbs 200 f/2 prime will gain popularity. 😊
I did a wedding with this lens. Its huge. The upsides were obvious. The downsides were that when you do portrait work with it, it's so big that subjects are intimated, and it's great to change focal lengths but it's so big to use that you can't do that quickly, it's not a run-and-gun lens.
Im 73 years old and shoot local rugby and football. I go out with two lenses a Canon EF 400 2.8 l prime (monopod) and aEF 70-200 2.8 L no issues at all with the weight of these two.
I can honestly say, every time I click you videos I just learn more and more about photography. As a newbie I’m still learning but I thank you for these videos.
For anyone here put off by the lens' 3lb weight it's really not that bad for a longer shoot. I'm used to the Sigma 50-100 f/1.8 which is 3.3lbs. Sure maybe not ideal for a full day wedding shoot but that kind of weight is pretty managable for general portrait shooting. I had the 50-100 attached to my hand all day in Spain taking photos of my family and I never got tired. I'm not super strong or anything either.
@@domoniquedavenport129 Hey dude, I've not used the 28-70! Sorry! I was just wanting to get across that based on the weight of lenses i've used in the past I wouldn't be put off getting the 28-70 because of it's weight. It would definitely seem worth it to me.
Most people swear by shooting either in shade or backlit when the sun is high. How are your noon images so flattering, can't be just lifting the shadows can it?
cool lens... but at 3lbs... think I'll just use the 24-70 f/2.8 and deal... or just grab a prime. great to see more interesting lenses coming out though. gotta give props to Canon.
Alright so I have bought the rf 50mm and I will admit I love the bokeh and the picture quality but if ima be carrying around 2 pounds.. what’s 1 more pound and get this one. Selling the 50 and getting this one
I think you not selling this lens because the weight, I think its ridiculous. Use a 1DX MKIII with a 70-200 2.8. Your observation of this lens is just ridiculous.
For one, it seemed pretty bright at that day. Also, slightly over exposing is a „trick“ to make images pop out more + it prevents noise in shadows. Sometimes it’s better to over then to under expose as restoring highlights is easier (as long as they are not completely overexposed) then dealing with noise in dark areas. Of course I have no idea if any of those thoughts went into his shooting, but I am assure he has 100 times the shooting experience of me so he will know what he is doing and what style he wants to achieve
I don't understand why do many people essentially say that the weight of this lens is prohibitive. Sure, you can go lighter and the weight is a downside. But a prohibitive one? Clearly not, given that a standard DSLR wedding setup is at least as heavy. The way I see it I save weight on the body which I can "spend" on a lens like this and get a combination that's no heavier than what I'm using now.
Can I put that lens on a Sony? Not without adapter you say. But I am building a Sony ecosystem I say. Especially when there is the 24-70 that I already have for Sony. But they gotta has more shit to sell us. Don’t they.
Hi. I know I am not the best example of person who can criticize but I wan say that for video perpose you could do better, except when you do it for purpose. On the first shot I can see basketball pole, and on another shot a electric power pole rose out of her head. Apologies for my "English"
As a professional photographer I am not so much into the specs. Thanks Manny for getting right to it! When I watch review videos I want to see the final images and your experience not someone spewing out a bunch of numbers & specs. Great video!
You remind me of Omari Hardwick. Anyway love the content I’ve been watching your videos for a while and I realized I hadn’t subscribed yet. Tf is wrong with me lol.
See, people out there shitting on Canon, but for real, they care! They care about giving you the sharpest glass humanly possible while at the same time they care about your gains. 💪🏽💪🏽
@@MrNotorik I am not surprised that you like the lens. Its a great focal length for a wedding photographer and the f2 aperature, you get fantastic photos
My goto lens for seniors, family and engagement was the 200 f2 with 5d4. Heavy yes but you get used to it. Ive shot 4 sessions b2b with the 200f2 haha. I'm saving up for the 28 70 f2. It beats switching out primes.
See the extra weight as a bonus to gain strength! Take it for a walk without having a mission in mind. I have done many walks wihtout taking a single shot, no regrets.
I love the 28mm over 24 and 35 so having F2 in that is great since Canon will probably never make another 28 1.8 or 28 1.4 like Nikon . I just switched to R6 from 16 yrs with Nikon and miss some lenses like 28 1.4 or 105 1.4...
i love how you shoot natural light in super bright sun and still get super good images, i have lost touch of natural light, i just shoot strobe and natural light seems harder for me lol
