This is great, I never knew or thought making templates for photos in Photoshop. Not is this something, new but a great idea. I followed along, and printed a sheet of photos of my family members, I also made some other templates with 5 X 7 on in Portrait and one in Landscape. I will be creating some more templates with different sizes. Thank you for showing this technique and the idea of having some templates for various size photos that one can use again and again. I learn a lot in your videos.

Susan I’m so glad that this was of help to you. The picture package feature that was in Photoshop was extremely helpful but being able to make it yourself and have it work is an awesome achievement. Well done and thank you for taking the time to comment.

Thanks Helen; great video, excellently demonstrated. This is a really excellent technique for us photographers supporting our scrapbooking partners who seem to be constantly demanding photos of various shapes and sizes!! Out of interest, it is possible to do this in PS Elements: despite not being able to create Smart Objects, if you create your basic template as in this video, place your photos on a layer above the desired template slot, then create a clipping mask, you can enlarge or make smaller your image to your heart's content staying within your desired slot.

Hi Chris! I’m glad you found the video useful and yes scrapbookers are bemoaning the lack of this picture package feature. It really made no sense for Adobe to remove it and I have asked their PS product managers at various conferences if they will put it back and they just are not interested. Which is extremely annoying. But at least we do have the ability to create our own templates and I’m so glad that you were able to work out how to do this in Photoshop Elements - your methodology is great and I’m glad that you’re able to help out with the printing. Thanks for taking the time to comment and show us your workflow. Cheers Helen

So I followed this through but seem to be having an issue when embedding the images - I've set up my layers to be 4*6 inches but when I place embedded a photo that has been exported from lightroom on 4*6 aspect ratio there's a mismatch between the '4*6' inches of the window in the layer and the '4*6' aspect ratio from might room - any ideas? It's driving me crazy!

So, this is really confusing. What I would do is to check the pixel dimensions of the file as exported from Lightroom. You need to determine where the problem is and, as you are exporting from Lightroom to begin with, check the export file. There should be a 4:6 ratio between the width and height. So, if you divide the pixels on the long edge into the pixels on the short edge you should get .666 as the answer. If not, then Lightroom is your fail point. If yes, then your Lightroom export is probably fine and you'll need to look again at your Photoshop file layers. Does this help?

I had to rewatch so many times to figure that the difference with this and the prev vid seems to be that you don't convert to smart object until after you have all your layers ready. If you convert to smart object first, the remaining smart copies will be a copy of each other. If you convert to smart object after your layers are ready, they will be individual images.

Exactly what I was looking for!!!!!! Except when I go to print it loses quality of the photo. Any idea on how to fix that?
@HelenBradley

Check to see how big your document is? I wonder if you have enough pixels to print the document at the desired size.

@@HelenBradley I used images off Google just for practice. I found an image and then saved it to my computer. Then followed all your steps. Worked beautifully but I’m not sure how to get it to print clear. I should mention I am VERY beginner to using photoshop. Like a newborn 🤣

It’s OK. We all have to start somewhere. Your explanation is really helping me to understand what your problem most likely is. Images on Google are probably very small in terms of their pixel size. That’s the width and height determined in pixels. When you’re printing you need about 150 pixels for every inch of print. My bet is that the images that you’re getting from Google are probably so small that they’re going to be very pixelated as they are printed. I would try to use pictures of your own that have been taken with a cell phone camera as they are likely to be better sizes for printing. If you have a problem with those then that’s another issue altogether. But you need to work out first what the likely problem is and I’m pretty confident that the Google images are just too small for high quality printing.

Hi, is there a way I can automate a bunch of horizontal photos to be placed into 4x6 templates? I am trying to create a specific size image to be cut out of the 4x6 for keychains. thanks for your very clear tutorials.

Thank u so muhc!!! its been really difficult to find videos that actually explain this, and you really helped me a lot, i also watched another one that its for the same picture, thank u again. But i have one question, is there any way that i can make this in a batch? like i have for example 60 different pictures that i want to print is there any way to put them in the layout more automatically than going one by one? bc im trying to make an experiment of a flipbook and i need a lot of pictures in a specific size but going one by one would take me years. i really would like to know if thats possible or if i can find a way to make it more faster or maybe search how to do it.

I don't have an automated solution for you, sorry. You could try and find an online flip book maker that organizes it all for you but really, I think it might not take as long as you think it might to do it by hand. However, best of luck!

I am trying to add a pictures in to a space after watching this video but for some reason when I press command t and then command 0 nothing happens any suggestions
@HelenBradley
@HelenBradley 4 года назад
Make sure you have the image selected and make sure that Photoshop isn't waiting for you to do something like commit a change. Also not that it is command + T and Command + 0 (zero) - it has to be the number zero (which you are probably using - I just need to be sure you are). I just re-tested this on the Mac in PS 2020 and it works just fine so I'm not sure why it isn't working for you. Let me know how you go? If this isn't working for you, you can change a PS preference that will help you out. Choose Photoshop > Preferences > General (on a PC that would be Edit > Preferences > General) and select the Resize Image During Place checkbox - that will automatically resize the images you are placing so they fit inside your document in future meaning you only have to make them larger and never smaller. I hope, one way or another, one of these solutions works for you.
