Oh wow Colin. This is possibly the most useful video I have seen on your channel. I have been wanting to do exactly what you demonstrated in this video, but could not work out how to move the selection in an Action. So not only have I learnt a cool tip for Gen Fill, I have significantly improved my knowledge for using Actions.
Heads up, your generative fill layers may have been sampling from that low res layer you had. Photoshop always samples from all layers when generating these AI layers. You might have gotten an even better result by leaving the transparency prior to using the action!
@@photoshopcafe I don’t think what Mark says will work. If you try the automation on the selection that hasn’t been filled yet (just extended crop) it doesn’t know what to do, at least on my Windows 10 it doesnt.
@@KenToney I came down to comment exactly what Mark said. It does work for me. Just be sure that it's a transparent background and not a color fill. I've seen some people generate piece by piece with a white background, and photoshop will believe that to be part of the image.
@@CGingerbreadman I’m thinking it shouldn’t matter as it’s going to be 1024 anyway. The action works great but on a normal Sony a1 image it took about 8 to get across the bottom
Just set the rectangle selection to 1024x1024 and with a single click you create a perfect selection where needed each time. The action probably will be not so useful since every photo is different and you should create one for different situation. I hope this issue will be probably solved in future version in any case.
Good idea for an action. You can just set the style of the Rectangular Marquee tool to Fixed Size instead of Normal and type 1024x1024 in, no need to faff about and make a square first!
@@photoshopcafe Jesus gave you a shout out on his latest upload Colin. I mentioned to him that we always send people to yours and his channel when possible on the Adobe forum.
Great video Colin, thank you, but I can't seem to move the rectangle despite an hour of trying/watching vids and scratching my head! I followed your process for creating the action and created the rectangle. when I hit V, either the selected layer jumps to background and moves the whole image, or the rectangle disappears. Any tips on what I'm doing wrong here?
WOW....thanks. Ive been using this new Gen Fill on old photos to restore, and "recompose" them, since many were not taken with the best photographer (parents and grandparents)..I usually upscale and recover faces first with Topaz Photo AI, then expand the boarders where I need to recompose them. This works great.
Colin, there appear to be some gaps here. I followed your instructions exactly. Tried several times but failed to create the action. BTW, the action will no longer be needed when Adobe releases their version that contains Generative Fill, right?
I can't seem to get the Rectangle tool to move? When I follow the video a transparent layer is created above the pixel layer with a 1024 X 1024 shape, but the shape can't be moved without dragging/ moving the pixel layer below the transparent layer with the shape on it? Help please!? Great idea to automate it!
Hello Colin, impossible to find the download link for this action (iA with good resolution) ; is this action included in the new course on Generative Fill in Photoshop? THx
Hi! How can i modify the action to make a vertical generative fill? If I want to extend the image on a vertical edge? Also, I had an issue with the action when trying to move the selection at the beginning. It kept trying to move the entire layer instead of the actual selection. I finally got the selection itself to move. (Can't remember exactly how.)
So, could this be used to place an image off center in AI images? By that is I generate a picture of a reacock and it is centered, can I use this technique to move it to the left or right of center? The example above doesn't add to the left oe right. I am not a PS user but if this could help expand the field of the image to either direction I would start using PS.
This video, and the course, which I have purchased, are superb. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about registering for the WEB site and the Freebies. The links do not work and when I try to get help it refuses to recognise my email and password. I have tried changing my password and the new password is not accepted either. I have given up after a frustrating hour or so.
This probably because you are already signed up. Click the direct link to the vault from one of the weekly newsletters. If you still have issues, please open a support ticket on the website, and we will help you
@@photoshopcafe the second time of trying I was already signed up. But not the first. I tried to approach support but the site would not accept my original password, which was saved elsewhere, so I knew it was correct, or my updated password, which was very easy to remember as it mirrored my frustration. That is why I have given up.
What a great idea. I think this tip will be very helpful. Would be great if this action could be downloaded for people that are unsure how to create it. Maybe offer it for sale?
Colin, what is happen for me is that if I add canvas and use Gen Fill in 1024 x 1024 tiles to the empty background, then Gen Fill has erratic results. It never seems to fill the entire tile, and fills even less of the selection on the second and third iteration. If I fill the empty canvas with Gen Fill or Content Aware Fill (I have to flatten the CA Fill) I then get similar results to yours using the 1024 square tiles. I notice your progress bar moved very quickly when using Gen Fill. Way faster than mine. Was that real time or did you speed it up for the sake of the video. (I have VDSL 2 with 70mbs down and 12mbs up). How does Gen Fill handle layers? e.g. when using it one bite at a time the last fill area layer is selected, but when I used Content Aware Fill before using Gen Fill, it did not blend with the background layer unless I merged the layers first. Sorry for so many questions.
unfortunately I keep getting "The command “Set” is not currently available." when it gets to moving to the next selection. ... hummm. Will keep trying to figure out what the *(&&^% I'm doing wrong. Should work!
A bug I have (using W10 on a fast computer) is when I have beta PS open and go back and forth working on pics from LR after 3-4 times my Generative Fill floating tool disappears ( shows in the windows list that it’s selected). I have to restart to bring it back.
Cafe Vault email confirmation emails are not being sent Colin??? Been trying for over an hour now and I have checked my entire Gmail setup in Chrome on my Windows PC.
your actions link. i am not receiving the confirmation email. Checked all folders nothing! I already receive your newsletters so my email is not a problem. Thanks
hmmm, I didn't see it much better. The before you showed zoomed in, and the after started at zoomed out... I don't think if it was zoomed in, it would be much better. It doesn't make it better when I tried this.
If you want sharper results DON'T use GF at the start. Otherwise it's going to try blend in with the lowRes GF around it. instead use Content aware fill. THEN this method.
I am sure all of the AI features will be very popular, but I am also sure that at some point what you are creating is no longer an actual photograph. At best it will become a composite with little relation to scene you actually saw in real life. At worst, it will be a complete computer-generated fiction that never did or ever will exist in real life. That doesn't mean it can't be beautiful or that it isn't art, but it most definitely won't be a photograph. Another question will be "Whose work/creation is it?" Is it yours or does more of it belong to the programmers who created/trained the AI or to the people who created the content used to train the AI. I compare it to a commissioned work rather than your own "art." We live in interesting times!
To be honest, this 'hack' just doesn't work. It improves a terrible result a bit, but not by much. At first i was enthousiastic about this new option, but that was because i used it on a few images with a blurry background. I have since tested it extensively. Even if i do it it in tiny increments like 80x250 pixels, it is still visibly of a much lower resolution that the rest of the image. Very disappointing Adobe!
@@photoshopcafe You don't read very well. I said it did a good job extending images with a blurry background. I also said that since that i have tested it extensively. With various images of course. The results are very disappointing. A city scape results in cartoonesk houses. Landscapes result in low res grass and foliage. Generative fill is low res by default.
