I see how to select the highlights or the shadows but is there a way to select just the midtones?

There is but it's an entirely different method. I'll do a video on it in a week or so.

Thanks for explaining this in a simple & easy to understand way. I love your teaching style Anthony, such a help!

Thanks, Anthony, that was literally enlightening. Short and clear. Years ago I purchased a renowned plug-in for Luminosity Masks in Photoshop. Included was an extensive course, which was very well made, but the creator actually never even mentioned these basics, he focused solely on his plug-in buttons for Mask A or Mask B. This is like the "lost prologue" of that course.

thanks Anthony. I am new to luminosity masks and watched a fews videos trying to grasp how they work. Most of them were very intimidating and too advanced. Yours is the only one that gave me that light bulb moment! Thank you for your clear concise and simple explanation! Now I can go explore some more....

Perhaps a follow-up video on tools available to more easily create luminosity masks. My favorite is Tony Kuyper's TK 8. Matt Koslowski also has one and I am sure there are many more. Or a video on how to create a photoshop action that creates them. I think people are much more likely to use them in their workflow if they can automatically generate them.

Thank you for demonstrating such a useful tool. I use Lightroom Classic mainly and have greatly enjoyed your tutorials that help us to use Photoshop and not be intimidated by it. Your tutorials are clear and easily understood by novices. Looking forward to the next one.

Anthony you did a great job of explaining the process ! As a fairly new Photoshop user, I found it SO much easier to use masks once I invested $29 in TK8 or Lumenzia masking panels ! One click on each area really simplifies the concept. Thanks

Hi Anthony, I use Greg Benz's Lumenzia Photoshop Panel. Although there's a substantial learning curve, it's very flexible and allows you to do about anything with luminosity masking, including exposure blending. I use it so much that I have it permanently installed as a panel in Ps. Thanks for your very informative videos!

Amazing plug in, and Greg is constantly improving it. He is also very responsive on his FB page to users. Highly recommend it.

This will be a welcome addition to my tool kit. I often have to adjust shadows in my photos. This seems much more refined and easy to do.

Great video! I realize this was LM 101, but it cleared up a lot of misconceptions I had about LM and will be useful. I look forward to more of your videos on the subject. Thank you.

Can you please cover this in detail for Lightroom too? I’m presently struggling with luminosity masking in Lightroom with shots taken in the old walled cities of Split and Dubrovnik where the top half of the buildings are in very strong sunlight and the lower half is in deep shadow. I find this to be very touchy and maybe you can give us some pointers on how to best do this.

I`d like that as well because tbh although I`m on the Adobe Photography plan and have access to PS I only really use LRC because Photoshop frightens me and this video proves why that is. I followed the first part up to the brightening, but then it just shows how complicated PS is to someone like me now getting older and then its more difficult to learn new things.

I am shocked Photoshop (and LR) has not added a simple 1 click LUMINOSITY MASK option yet. It is insane in 2023 to still have to go through all of these steps to create one. I also use ON1 which has a 1-click luminosity mask option built in (no plugins or actions needed). So easy. it's absurd that PS and LR does not offer this still to this day.

@AnthonyMorganti Great video! Was hoping to solve one of the issues I have with an outdoor evening photo of a home where all indoor lights came out orange. Guess Photoshop has changed the menu again. In PS 25.11.0, the thumbnails under Channels have disappeared so I can't make this type of adjustment. Is there another way to do this?

Thank you .. I was also having the same question as a primarily Lightroom user and do a lot of landscape photography , however at the end of the video I was a bit familiar with these approach and if I’m not wrong I can do most of these ( if not all ) in Lightroom .. there’s luminance mask or color mask can be useful for detecting shadows or highlights .. and there’s color grading mask which you can adjust the colors and luminance of highlights shadows midtones separately .. am I missing something ? or both software do the same job with this topic ?

Have question I like taking long exposures of trees on what people call a boneyard the trees move in the waves which gives it a ghosting effect have done a video on how to fix this ? I did take two photos of the tree one a fast shutter speed the second long exposure will this help in fixing this ?

Hi Mr Morganti as someone has put below, could you do a video showing how to do this in LRC please? I have the Adobe Photography Plan but even though I have access to PS I very rarely open it up. This is a case in point, I followed the first part of this video up to the brightening, but then it just shows how complicated a technique like this is in PS to someone like me now getting older, and then finding its more difficult to learn new things.

I run a action script that give me 6 selection of the 3 tones. Then I do LM on it. I been doing this for 2 years. I have yet to get into the fancy panels like Lumensia, Raya Pro, etc etc. I want to learn the basic first. LM is powerful! Better than combining it to HDR which give horrible results.

Great idea. After 5 months I would think you're ready to try the free download version of either Lumenzia or TK9.
@dktraveller8364
@dktraveller8364 Год назад
This is so imprecise and awkward. I think Lrc (or ACR if you want to stay in Ps) is a much better and easier way to select the exact luminosity range that you want to work on.
@andreas.farsch
@andreas.farsch Год назад
Yes, but Photoshop has a lot of different tools to achieve the same thing. Like the Color Range Filter or Blend If. These tools are way more precise and you can preview the actual effect on your image before committing to it. Perhaps that's the real downside of PS: it has accumulated so many functions that are very similar, and nothing gets thrown out.
@dktraveller8364
@dktraveller8364 Год назад
@@andreas.farsch well, I agree that Ps has a multitude of awesome tools but my comment is regarding luminosity masks and which is easier and more precise, using channels in Ps as described in the video or using luminance range in ACR. What do you think?
@andreas.farsch
@andreas.farsch Год назад
@@dktraveller8364 Yes, luminance range in LRC and ACR are easier and more precise for the quick retouch. I would try that route first. But the topic of luminosity masks is a vast chapter of Photoshop. I can only speak of my experience with dedicated tutorials, I'm not an expert. But this video is really an introduction. You can get very precise with luminosity masks, and you can do powerful things with it. Like selective color grading. Lightroom and ACR don't provide the tools (or only a tiny amount of tools) to actually adjust e.g. colors once you have created a mask. The tools in Photoshop are seemingly endless once you combine them.
@dretwav
@dretwav Год назад
But there are many tools for photoshop to generate these masks. I think few people actually use the method here. Personally I find the TK-8 plugin the best for luminosity based masks.
@alangauld6079
@alangauld6079 Год назад
I've been playing with the new luminosity masks in Affinity Photo 2. They are so much easier and more precise than those PS masks. I'd assumed Affinity just did what PS did but I see they've rethought the whole process.
@davestokes3446
@davestokes3446 6 месяцев назад
I don't think you're being fair to PSCC, there are so many ways of adjusting masks. Try ALT + click on the mask followed by CTRL + L to make a levels adjusment to it, or CTRL + M to use curves.
@alangauld6079
@alangauld6079 6 месяцев назад
@@davestokes3446 Quite possibly, I don't use Photoshop so I'm only comparing what's in the video with how Affinity Photo does it(which is what I do use). I have had no experience with PS since a very early version around 1998 and Photoshop Elements v11 (which I used prior to Affinity alongside the GIMP).
@skogstorpsvagen
@skogstorpsvagen Год назад
But the Luminosity masking in Lightroom is very strong, so this seems like a little old way to do it. Just a slider to set it for the lighter and darker areas. Camera Raw filter or at import in Photoshop.
