Hey! Marty I've discover simple editable way to clean up the area. Steps are: 1st- Make new blank layer, fill with white color. 2nd- Click the layer mask button to make layer mask of that layer and invert the color of the layer mask. 3rd- Set foreground color white then we will able to clean the area that we do not want. This how we don't need to take snapshot of the image. Do you like my idea??? And please tell me if I'm not correct!
@BLTV_Photoshop

Love your tutorial here but as a fellow photoshop lover, if you wanna make the drawing have little pencil strokes, merge everything and copy the background layer, go to filter - filter gallery - graphic pen and choose the settings you feel looks good, then click ok and set that layer to "darken" in the blending modes. play with the opacity until it looks right. now your drawing has little drawing strokes, it looks even more realistic!!! take care :)

Thanks a ton, that's great and easy! You can finish it with (on a new Composite Layer on top) Filter Gallery > Graphic Pen (Stroke 3, Light/Dark Balance 100) and put the blend mode to either lighten or darken, whatever you prefer. Play with the opacity of this layer. if it is too harsh you can put on a motion blur on this compo layer with a decent blur in the same direction as the strokes of the filter. I did 47° and 4.

I've tried this on two older photos I have. Is there a way to enhance the picture so that it will transform better? If not, what makes this work so well? I noticed you have no background and the face is very clean and clear. Is it harder to do this on a man's face? I'm really having a tough time of it and I'm sure it is just my original. It is sort of "flat" in tones and contrast. Is that my problem? Thanks for all your great vids!!

There are many ways to correct the brightness and contrast of photos. For example, you can go to Image > Auto Tone or Auto Contrast. Or you can go to Image > Adjustments > Curves . In the Curves window, on the right, click "Auto".

The tutorials are great and I appreciate the succinct and simple manner in which they are presented, but I really wish you elaborated more on the techniques and methods used to better understand how they effect what's happening on screen. Sometimes I'm left with questions of how and why you decided to approach an image a particular way. Maybe if you explained more on why and what happens when you decide to take certain steps (i.e. why you inverted the color dodged layer and how it cancels out the original image, and then cover what the gausian blur is actually doing, etc.). That way it's easier to wrap our heads around how these methods dictate the results we end up with.

Hi Marty, I have something to add to this tutorial...first off, thanks! this pencil drawing is great! As to controlling the areas that start turning black with too much levels movement, I found that if you add an exposure layer and offset by about +0.10, it acts as a limiter to the blackness so that can go back and use the levels to your heart's content.

If this tutorial didn't work, it is probably due to the Hue/Saturation adjustment layer clipping to (i.e. only affecting) the Layer 1 layer, when it should actually affect all layers below. If this is your problem, then the easy fix is to rt-click Layer 1, and click Release Clipping Mask.

This has probably been said before but the distinction about the size and resolution of the photo in the beginning could be clipped out. It might cause some people to believe that they MUST reduce their photos before this technique will work. It's all done by the eye in the tutorial. So the amount of Gaussian blur and the size or the brushes will be "large" and "small" relative to the resolution of the photo, whether it's a mere 2 megapixels or 50 megapixels, as was the first image I tried and it worked perfectly.
