Photoshop vs Lightroom - the power of Photoshop

I too start in lightroom, do raw adjustments.. then finish in photoshop, then when I am done, save back into Lightroom for organizing. Fully agree round tripping is my preferred workflow

I disagree about the usefulness of the range masking in Lightroom. I know some are impressed by it, but I find it to be pretty useless. Sometime I will make a video showing my point of view on it. It depends on how serious post processing is to the person I suppose. Layer masks, luminosity selections and blend if options cant be competed with in lightroom, they just cant.

Nick Page that is fair. PS can indeed do more but everything you showed with the masking can be done just as thoroughly in LR. It could be a nice “edit-a-thon” challenge.

Nick Page I don’t think there is a way to focus stack in LR other than the right click and send to PS. As for exposure blending that is just layered adjustment brushes. Essentially the work just like your PS layers.

pretty much everyone that hasn't learned it yet doubts that its worth learning I find. The learning curve is steep enough that people tend to just say... Lightroom is good enough for me. Sometimes they need a little push :)

@@NickPage like I said, I agree with you that PS can do a lot more things. But don't fall into the trap of downplaying a tool because you know another one really well or feel more comfortable working in it. I believe that many of the adjustments can be performed a lot quicker and as effectively in LR. When my team designs software we strive to hide the complex techie work from the end user. Users should be able to perform their tasks with a minimum of effort. That is why Luminar and Aurora HDR are gaining on LR, PS, and older editing tools. If Luminar 4 can live up to the hype, I can see a large group of LR users moving over to it. Once again, thanks for sharing your knowledge and taking the time to reply to my comments.

@@grmrtnz Lightroom has its place, in my own workflow as well.. just not when I want to really want to do my best on an image. Lightroom is great, for quick and easy, but not for taking full control. Not trying to argue, but i just cant agree with the "as effectively" part of the comment. Great for organizing, cataloging, or batch editing, just not for in depth edits striving to end up huge on someone's wall

It's not that bad. I've been using it professionally for over 20 years and am starting to get a pretty good handle on the basics... [grin]

Easier yes, but not nearly as powerful or flexible. It depends on the end goal you’re shooting for. Keep in mind that range masking and light room is not luminosity masking And nowhere near as powerful

@@NickPage In what way is selecting an area within an image based on brightness in LR not luminosity masking? I do a lot of work in PS, so I have no bias one way or another. I just don't see your point. BTW, where was the image you used in the example taken? It looks similar to Alabama Hills.

@@jimbass2127 yep it was Alabama Hills. The difference is the lack of ability to target or fine tune. It is masking .. kindof but its just guess work and not very refine able. its like comparing pliers to a wrench of the correct size.. there are times that you can make it work.. but many times that its just not a good enough tool for the job. I promise you, if you spend a little time with true luminosity masks and selections you wont be able to go back.

This video is meant to illustrate the difference and capabilities, I round-trip all of my photos and will show that in a future video.

I think that given the amount of educational content, it would be impossible to go any lower. If you compare it to other tutorials of the same scope.. its actually cheaper, then when you divide it by four.. yeah. I understand what your saying its unfortunately not in everyone's budget, but when viewed as an virtual workshop with 4 instructors rather than just one, I think the price can be justified. I think that those that see the value in paid content will see the value.... and those that prefer free content wont.

Jerry McNutt that’s why this tutorial is perfect. I was strictly Lightroom because photoshop scared me because it seemed to much. He explains it very clearly and it’s nice because you have the videos forever and you can replay them whenever

The way I look at it is that you can have the most powerful programs for photo editing for the price of two lattes each month, we spent thousands of dollars on our cameras and yet cheap out on the software that enables us to fulfill the other half of the creative process

true they will take the focus stacked images.. but not combine them together.

@@NickPage They can get it stacked inside, not with all lenses though, just a few, but the most interesting in landscape use.

I always prefer editing on my PC just for the power and speed. I learned purely through tutorials online, and RU-vid. Between RU-vid and resources like the phlearn, Lynda and my tutorials there’s nothing holding you back other than time

It seems to be a pretty popular request and a good idea for a video

typically thats what I do... one exposure for each of the focus stacked images.. then a dark exposure for the sky once I am focused on the background

Welcome! make sure you rummage through the back catalog!

lightroom can do adjustment pins over the top of the RAW file, but not layers per say... for example in photoshop its easy to see what each layer is and has done.. and back off the opacity of each one.. in lightroom its much much harder to fine tune what you have done, after you have done it.

ehhh you would be surprised how many people only use lightroom or try to say it can do everything you need it to do.

nothing surprises me anyone :-) i do most of my processing in LR but i finish my images in PS. i think that's pretty common. i know a few damn good photographers who use just LR -- but that may have changed since PS has been forced on them via subscription
