What people need to realize is that not all songs can be mixed in the middle. Sure, you could do a loop but it wouldn't sound right. A lot, but not all, tracks have a kind of breakdown/deconstruction part in the middle of the track that's perect for mixng in a new track. But if you have track that has a Drop that's 16 bars and then goes straight to a verse WAIT TILL THE END! As a DJ nothing hurst my ears more than a DJ that tries to mix in a new track while the current track is playing at full energy!
+ReboyGTR Good suggestion. I make my own mixes just so i can listen to what i want in the gym and sometimes i just break off the song in the middle of a 2 phrase breakdown at the first phrase and it just doesn't sound right, but sometimes the 16 bars seems redundant and repetitive and i want a way to keep the energy but make a change.
ReboyGTR man, couldn't agree with you more. What I think has happened is that ppl watch too many RU-vid videos of DJs. They think they have to be always touching the decks. Leave them alone. If you're playing good music people will want to hear most of the track
Well Said. The style of the music has to be taken into account as well. Keeping the levels optimal with only 2 decks can be challenging if you stay in the mix too much, a third deck or even just a sampler deck can help fill the void so to speak. if you want to mix mashup style and constantly stay in the mix trying to create something new, you should plan out your set on a sub or even micro track level. If it's not Krafty Kuts or Featurecast, I personally prefer a set that starts off with some rehearsed mashup style then progresses to an improv, feel the crowd, just let the tracks mix themselves for the most part style.
Two breakdowns in the one track ,just kills the energy and gets old real quick. Editing is the key. Especially for trance. Progressive and techno you don't have to worry about
that kind of mixing started especially with EDM...respect for both DJs trying to squeeze xy songs/loops/samples in 2 minutes and people who actually enjoy it
I have been following this guy for the last 5 years and I do gotta say I have learned a lot from this guy. Everything he does is great and it is awesome to see that he uses many different types of industry equipment. Because of this I have a well rounded and generalized idea as to how to use many types of controllers, mixers, industry standard cdj's, so on and so forth. Its great stuff!!!! It does appear that sometimes when he is in the mix and trying to show us stuff that he is off beat and what not, but he does explain at the very beginning of almost every video that this is for tutorial purposes only. I have practiced as many of these tutorials as I can with my equipment and it has helped me to become a much better dj over the years. Keep the lessons coming man!!!
I came across phrase mixing sort of by accident and it was the best feeling. Accidentally mashing up two songs and having everyone love it when in reality i had no idea what i had just done.
maybe random but very helpful...Thanks ellaskins QUESTION I have a reloop beatmmix 2 my next buy is between XONE PX5 or a pioneer XDJ RX i mainly mix techno, tech house... Please help (Sorry for my english)
is there a way to choose vinyl or cdj mofe on ddj t1? like when u push the plater it wont stop the track.. pls let me know.and also what is the shift on ddj t1
For me Serato was way to complicated with over exaggerated waveforms that led to anything other then cleanliness. I know Pioneer is supported with it but VDJ works better.
Wow i can actually understand you.for some reason other youtubers confuse it all.ive picked loads up from your videos (must be the way u put it) thanks
It’s really useful for a freshman thx a lot~ By the way may I asked u a question ? About how do u stop the music when u slide the disk ? I only could let the music go faster or slower... I just started to learn It will be appreciate that u could answer my question THX
Great video, I. think it might be a little bit hard to mix progressive house or deep house in the middle sine there is a lot of long melodies going on. But I think this might be good for tech house or techno.
Quick movements like that could make the kicks in the mix a liiiittle bit off. correct me if i'm wrong please... Should we choose a particular place in the other track where we are mixing in, witch hasn't a lot of elements?
Could you please make another lesson/ tutorial about different phrases in the track which you can mix instead of the typical outro/ intro? Would be much appreciated :)
Well it depends on genre, but mostly each phrase has something unique and when phrase is changing the sound of track is changing too. For example Drop came in, kick snare kick snare, next phrase - hi hats come in, another phrase - hi hats ended. It could be everything, bassline, chorus and melody etc.
+Krzysztof Radwan he didnt ask about phrases but examples of phrases to use to transition during. you can transition on any phrase just make sure your coming in with what your taking out ei dropping on the 1 a drop from deck B and taking out the drop after the build from deck A. you wouldnt want to have a build lead into say a intro or outro or break. play around. chances are if it doesnt work youll know why.
it's easy anyway, all u need is to count phrases. How many intro, first drop, breakdown, second drop, outro phrases track consists. Just analyze structure of it.
it's a good idea to sometimes bring the next track in during a breakdown,if timed right this can sound massively energetic when I'm mixing trance especially if the next track starts with a big drop after the breakdown, you have to be careful tho bringing a track in during a breakdown,it can go awfully wrong
man i saw some video you made ! nice ! what surprise me is that in every videos i see different pioneer equipment !!!! man you must earn a lot ! why do you use pioneer xdj when you have the last cdjs? Saludos !
Hey there!!! i watch your videos on youtube, and i was just wondering. I'm gonna use a CDJ800 for the first time on saturday, and i'm used to using a controller. i just want to ask, HOW do i load tracks FROM SERATO SCRATCH LIVE using PIONEER CDJ800 TO DECKS 1 AND 2. CAUSE on NUMARK MIXTRACK PRO 3 YOU CAN FIND the LOAD button for decks 1 and 2 on the top. how do i load tracks to deck 1 and deck 2 on a CDJ800??? HELP!! hehe = )
Ive seen many Dj's do a multi drop, multi song, speed mix, they do it usually at the start of the night to hype the crowd, and it is possible and it does sound good. So why don't people just listen and learn for once.
Sincere question. Yes this was seamless but How would a manager listening to your mix even know that it’s 2 different tracks if you’re not doing this live? (For the impression factor)
hello ellaskins, im ok at beat mixing but want i really want to do is to mix the intro in from an oldskool tune that does not run from start to finish of the 4x4 so that the first beat starts in sync with the tune playing out
Also the thing is that club managers probably can't tell (especially with deep and future house) when the song changes because the drops can't be distinguished unless they are played consecutively
I really wish Pioneer made a controller like the DDJ-RX but with displays to look like the CDJ 2000 NXS-II on the decks. It would work with Rekordbox, USB and Serato.
tbh, i hate it when djs chop the track up ,or cut it short to mix in 15 tracks in 15mins. The track it self is banging ,and when you here it and you like it, it makes you dance harder, , i want to here all of it not ,just a section. so when dj mash up ,chops it off to mix something else in that doesn't carry on the flow and vibe, ruins it for me mashups are cool, . but you cant build a progressive set , .
exactly, .. most tracks i listen or buy has a build and progressive part, chopping it out when its getting going is insane, but theres a difference, between, edm, vs techno or progressive house, people might say , its alll edm, but you know how a edm , club hyped up track sounds. ... check pryda , progressive and true, no edm,
Of course, EDM is a completely different genre vs deep house, techno, electronica...Techno has a different musical theory compared to the whole "party edm". Techno is in my opinion much more advanced and intellectual. Thats why the whole IDM (intelligent dance music) scene was created which involved mainly techno.
+Tomas Newland If it's done right.....it should all seamlessly blend together. Ideally you want your mix to sound like one long track so people like you can keep dancing, no matter what's playing :) As I dj...what I like to see is people continuously dancing but going wild mid dance because I mixed in another track that they really like seamlessly.
I agree with you guys... Proper Progressive house, or deep house... Those nice long transitions are what makes it for me... not these quick cuts. It does depend on where you're playing though. Regardless, 15 tracks in 10 minutes sounds absolutely stupid to me.
A 2 hour mix is good if you actually make your own banging tracks. That's way more impressive than doing cool mixes of other people's songs. If you can do both then that's a madting
What if a track is just too damn complex to mix into anything else during the middle? Your advice is good, but I think it's very genre specific. If i'm mixing up complex trance tracks for example, mixing in another track somewhere in the middle, regardless of the other track being in the same key, pitch, feel.... etc will still sound messy. The track needs to have a section somewhere in the middle where it becomes considerably more simplistic in order for this style of mixing to work. So it would need to be on a track by track basis.
can't believe most comments about this dj'ing video is about the 15 tracks in 10 minutes. that's dj'ing. I learnt with vinyl and still use vinyl. I had cdj's. back in the day tunes were made by 3 deck mixes. chopping up tracks is part of your style and relation to genre, this style of house maybe no but harder more energy tracks etc yes. that's what it's about and it gives you style. and if your a good dj this is where it shows. you can mix 15 tracks in 10 minutes that can make a mix sound like 1 mash up remix track keeping the same energy throughout. no one wants 10 minutes of mixed emotions. that's what comes part and part of being a good dj. hip hop scratch djs can mix scratch sample 15 tracks in a minute and a half. . Doesn't mean it sounds bad.. it's that genre that way of mixing. listening to these tutorials dj'ing has become far too geeky and boring. have fun mixing
ears and practice. listen for the high hats on off beats dont beat match to the bass kicks. remember most 'djs' now would never be able to spin records if you asked and probably dont own them so learn to spin records and be different
Blingdung ya sad case these new age djs have no idea of who even invented scratching , mixing record together etc let alone how a vinyl record looks or how to even play it. Best thing any dj could do is still buy some belt driven and direct drives and learn themself
is phrase mixing a rule of thumb or just one style to use transitions. .I get it I'm all good with it I just wonder because of the way music is built you always mix with phrases
depends on the music genre and a time of a night... 10 techno tracks in 15 minutes? destoys the vibe. now 8-10 grime tunes in 15 minutes? very nice (when we're speaking about peak time of a rave)
