Do you know? ඔබ දන්නවාද? The small groups of words in English which we call phrases? A phrase is a group of words without a subject and a Predicate of its own. A phrase is easy to understand if you know the types of phrases in English. Let’s talk about the different types of phrases and try to understand their usage in different situations.
1️⃣Prepositional Phrases.
2️⃣Present Participle Phrases.
3️⃣Past Participle Phrases.
4️⃣infinitive Phrases.
5️⃣Phrases Starting with Adjectives.
6️⃣Phrases Starting with Being + Past Participle.
🔶There are mainly three types of Phrases.
1️⃣Adjective Phrase ( Does the work of an adjective)
2️⃣Adverb Phrase ( Does the work of an adverb)
3️⃣Noun Phrase ( Does the work of a noun)
🔶What is a clause?
A clause is a group of words with a Subject and a Predicate of its own. There are mainly two types of clauses.
1️⃣Independent Clause ( Main Clause/ Principal Clause) - stand on their own as sentences.
2️⃣Dependent Clauses ( Subordinate Clauses) - can’t stand on their own and are normally followed by Main Clauses
🔶Also, we can identify the Dependent Clauses are of three kinds.
1️⃣Adjective Clause - acts as an adjective.
2️⃣Adverb Clause - acts as an adverb.
3️⃣Noun Clause - acts as a noun.
All these Subordinate Clauses are introduced by Subordinating Conjunctions such as ( who, that, which, whom, whose, when, while, after, before, since, as, if, unless, as soon as.....) Almost all language learners have great thoughts and ideas. But what they find difficult is they cannot communicate effectively.
