This clip discusses the ingredients and principles of an phonetic alphabet, in particular the principles of the IPA. Furthermore, the different variants of a notation for PDE are discussed. Historically, most modern systems for the transcription of English follow the principles of the IPA and are based on Daniel Jones' English Pronouncing Dictionary (1917).

I love these. I am studying phonology as module in my first year as a British English speaking dyslexic student. I learned a lot from these videos. I love how the lecturer has a Scottish tang with his German accent.

You explained it better than my former phonetics teacher at Universidad Nacional. Anyway, he did a good job, and I've always been into English phonetics and phonology.

It's like ks or gs with a glottal stop at the front of it... Sort of. Think about when you say the word eks...

Schwa |šəva|. Learnt this at school, first for English, then for French. It has been revised several times since, and who speaks RP, any more?

'Old School' radio announcers? For practical purposes, RP English is necessary as a "standard English" for teaching purposes (although 'rp' English is almost theoretical).
