Songwriter/Producer Thom Bell has died at age 79. In tribute, we share with you this song recorded by the great Phyllis Hyman for the Fish That Saved Pittsburgh soundtrack that didn't make it to the LP record. Enjoy!
An effort was made to post the entire soundtrack, but the music that is in the film has been blocked by WB Entertainment due to copyright claims.
_____
Thomas Randolph Bell (January 26, 1943 - December 22, 2022) was a Jamaican-born American record producer, arranger and songwriter known as one of the creators of Philadelphia soul in the 1970s. He is best known for his success with the Philadelphia sound in the 1970s, particularly with the Delfonics, Stylistics, and Spinners. In June 2006, Bell was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In 2016, Bell was inducted into the Musicians Hall of Fame and Museum. - Wikipedia

The Bible tells us when we die "we return to the dust of the ground" Genesis 3:19 says nothing about going to heaven when we die, but I know many want to go there God has the number of only 144,000 Revelation 14:1-4; 5:9, 10. The vast majority of mankind will live on the Paradise earth Revelation 7:9, 14.

And don’t forget country singer Loretta Lynn, she only had one song which was not a country song. She also passed away back in October at 90 years old.

I know. If this song was known back then, this would have been a song our church choir youth would have sung. Mean old Clive Davis. This lady knew the direction she wanted to go and he didn’t want to listen.

I met a young Black woman a while back who had no idea what Motown was or any of those fabulous artists. Not a single one!!! I told her that was a crime!!! I told her that had to be fixed immediately!! Not long after that I met another who is 38 and didn’t know any either!!! Shame on their parents!!! Don’t you agree?

I call you my soul sister 😄! I have been collecting real music, including soul ( not neo soul). I’m talking about Denise LaSalle, the Dramatics, Motown and the like. I’m a baby boomer so we got the best of both worlds, jazz, blues, gospel, soul and rock. With that Phyllis really put her all in this song towards the end. I really felt it.

@@alexandradillard2077 Hey Soul Sister😁👍🏻 yes all that music is my sanity saver lol especially now days!! Have you heard of the Hitsville USA Museum in Detroit? You probably have. I’ve put it number two on my bucket list. To pull up, walk up that sidewalk like all those artists did and go into the place where so much music was recorded? Oh my gosh!! The vibes you would feel!! Lol I don’t know if my heart could take it! Lol I can’t think of a better place to pass away! I most likely would find myself in good company!

In 1986 my girlfriend and I attended a New Year's concert at the Blue Note in NYC. I was peaking in her dressing room when she invited me in for a signed autograph. I still have to this day. She is still my favorite singer. I miss her so much. Mr. Bell thank you for sharing your God given gifts with the world. R.I.P family.

Out of nowhere, the movie "The Fish that Saved Pittsburgh" popped in my head during the recent live a couple of weeks ago that discussed iconic Black movies. I didn't know Thom Bell before this tribute, but I just looked him up on Wikipedia, and my goodness, I'm only now realizing that I grew up surrounded by and bathed in his musical arrangements. He arranged for some of my favorite groups, most especially the Stylistics. So now I know where their fabulous sound came from. RIP Mr. Bell, and much thanks to you for leaving us such a rich and beautiful musical legacy.

Thanks for posting this gem. If this was on Arista it’s a shame that Clive Davis didn’t release this one. This song would’ve gotten plenty of radio play in the Bay Area. Those DJs loved Phyllis Hyman. Is a lot of her music, besides You Know How To Love Me played on the east coast, especially in the Philly/Pittsburgh area? Does anyone know?

One of the songs from the soundtrack was the beautiful “Is It Love, Must Be Love” by country singer Loretta Lynn featuring Frankie Bleu. This was the only song from the soundtrack which was not a country song, because Loretta Lynn tried to attempt the Philly Soul sound, and she did only one time. Prior to that, Loretta Lynn was best known for her signature song “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in 1970. After many of her success as a country artist, she tried R&B d it worked. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-KlIqQhvgMTM.html
