My favorite female singer in my era along with Aretha Franklin. You need to hear more of her music, because of the feelings that she puts in her music and the way her songs touch your heart. That was Phyllis Hyman whistling in that song.

She also did the whistle. A Philly native but we loved her in DC! I've seen her many times and her performances were unbelievable. Blues Alley and the Carter Baron venues in DC seeing her perform was magic. I miss her so much.

Much love to you Lizzie ... when you made that "Scrunch" face, it was clear you felt her in this song. It is unfortunate that, as talented as she was, she suffered with mental health issues much of her adulthood ... culminating in her taking her life shortly before her 46th birthday. She was a gem of an artist (music and theater) ... and she is missed to this day. Another suggestion would be her song called "Old Friend" ... that song was great as well.

RIP Phyllis.... So sorry you felt all alone.

Lizzie, when you said you hadn't heard of Phyllis Hyman, I knew you were going to absolutely love her! She was such a remarkably talented singer and even performed on Broadway. Her career started in the late 70's with her biggest hit "You Know How to Love Me" released in 79. Others have already recommended other songs and it's a rabbit hole you truly enjoy. Very sultry, sexy and soulful singer, in my opinion very underrated for a person of her vocal skills! I have every album she has made, it's not one song of hers I didn't like or love! I met and talked with her in 85 at a concert before she went on stage to perform! I was very smitten from her beauty and grace, a very classy woman! I was devastated to hear the passing of Phyllis Hyman (06/30/95), it was like I lost an old and Dear friend! Phyllis was one of the greatest vocalists to ever do it. My favorite female vocalist. Unfortunately, this song was a mirror into her life and soul. She was loved by so many, and she never knew it. Numerous failed relationships, bouts of depression and loneliness lead her to take her own life. She is greatly missed by those who knew her and loved her music. R.I.P. 😪

I first heard her on a Chuck Mangione song, Consuelo's Love Theme.She is hauntingly angel from another world like.I then bought some of her albums in early 80s but was so sad to learn of her passing.Her voice reflects the deep feelings she was able to convey when singing from her lonely dark place.

Instant subscriber, and that was just based off your facial expressions. Ive been listening to this song for 30 years, and it still hits me the way it hit you today. I am a super music head, with Soul being my favorite genre. Whether it be natural empathy or personal experience, i truly appreciate someone who can tap into the emotions exuded by artists/songs like this. Phyllis was really one of them ones. RiP. For years, i would check for people reacting to her and there was no1, and today i decided to check again, and have seen several. Im so happy to see people FINALLY reacting to the 🐐, Phyllis Hyman. One of the greatest voices and most soulful singers to ever bless us. She definitely knew how to convey her hurt/pain, and you recognized it. Unfortunately we lost her to depression RIP. That whistle you hear throughout the song, which most would think is an intrument or digitally produced, is actually her. Please check out the 1987 live version of the song. I wouldn't be mad if you did a reaction to it. If you've never seen Spike Lee's School Daze, check it out. It addresses colorizm. She's in it, and performs at a party. There's gratitude all around for this video, Lizzie. My favorite Phyllis Hyman song is "You Know How To Love Me". I really enjoy sharing my experience with Phyllis Hyman's music. I bought her CD because of "You Know How To Love Me", and when I played it every song on it was a treasure to listen to. I would suggest choosing any track from her greatest hits CD, and listen to it. When great women vocalists are discussed, Phyllis Hyman's name should definitely be included. Watching your Phyllis Hyman video is pure joy, Lizzie. Thank you P.S., I've pulled/tweaked muscles and it's very uncomfortable to live with that pain.
