RU-vid IS THE BEST SOCIAL MEDIA PLATFORM, in my humble opinion. I've been able to see footage that I would've never gotten the chance to see ever, in my lifetime!
this is my all-time phyllis hyman song....i have this song on 45 r.p.m. such a warm and magnificent voice, my hear aches because her career wasn't as large as it should have been. why does it seem that those who are supremely talented are overlooked where those whose vocal ability is suspect at best have careers that shoot into the stratosphere? i've never understood that.
It happens because she was legitimately TALENTED, and would not compromise her integrity, or bow down to the Music Industry's Slave tactics. It was too much for her delicate mind to battle alone, so with her Mental Illness she ended up self-medicating, and just checking out.....Rest in Jesus, Phyllis, you were my special Friend.....
Although I love this song, I really prefer "The Answer Is You" from the same album. That should have been her biggest song/single then. It would have been totally different for her career...
Phyllis, Although 21 years have gone by since you decided to quiet the madness, your Memory Remains as Vivid today as ever. I seldom go more than a few days without thinking of you. Whenever I watch this video, I remember standing just off stage and smiling. We shared a bunch of laughs ,and also too many tears together. There will never be anyone able to replace the wonderful friend that I found in you. Rest well pretty lady. I'll miss you always. Your pal, Kenny.
MrKennylun This woman is the epitome of everything. Knowing that she's your friend brings tears to my eyes. My mom and aunts were on their way to her concert that fateful day! I was so young but I felt every single word with such depth. Hence the reason I'm an artist today. Anytime I need inspiration I come back to videos like this! The pain is her voice made me feel the pains she felt in her heart. Only a true gift from God can have that effect. I wanna tell her story one day. I feel it's my destiny. You're so blessed to have known her! I'll be looking for you one day... I need your story! ✨ Happy New Year and God bless!
@@BAIGE1000 Enjoyed your Post! There is a Play paying homage to Phyllis and her amazing life story, while bringing attention to Bi-Polarism currently in Chicago, Illinois.
Not in this lifetime, no one will ever sing like this classy and sophisticated lady, what a powerhouse voice. Just absolutely beautiful...R.I.P. Phyllis Hyman...I know you'll still singin' up in heaven with the angels...thanks for the memories.
Had the one chance of seeing miss HYMAN in late 89 or 90/ @ BLUES ALLEY wash.dc.I had already like her,but after seeing her LIVE ? OMG ,i fell in love with her ,not just her voice but she just had a commanding statue about her, beauty, charm & confidence a radiant smile that was hypnotic ! I tell u what i have'nt seen 1 person try a PHYLLIS HYMAN song on " american idol " BUT if they do they better bring their " A " GAME //////////!!!!! RIP MS HYMAN.
Whenever I hear about people committing or wanting to commit suicide I think about Phyllis Hyman. I don't know what troubled her so much in her life that she committed suicide but it tells me that you never know what someone is going through.
I guess we have to remembered her time was limited to her death on June 30th. Of course nobody expected it but it simply that way. God knew her timely death was going to happen. It's just so sad.
Some of the happiest people we see, is usually the most depressed ones. Some people are really good at masking this disease. It's always good to check on friends and loved ones. Phyllis was amazing and we can still cherish her through her artwork she created with her music.
Hey there music family....obviously we will never know what drove the late, great Phyllis Hyman to commit suicide as she is not here in the physical plane to tell us why. But in the spirit of Phyllis, she often shared how much she wanted to be loved.....not by us, her adoring fans, but a love of intimacy ...which she was never able to attain. Surely I can't say why it happen...bur her lifelong search was simple...only to be "loved ". RIP you sophisticated lady!
I truly loved her music and her! She was a very beautiful woman and had such a beautiful voice! R.I.P. Phyllis Linda Hyman! I hate she didn't get the recognition that she so rightly deserves! Gone but never ever forgotten! I really loved you!
wow. What a great, enormous talent and voice that she was. That was when singers sang with their raw God-given talent straight from their heart and soul,no gimmicks or synchronizers,et.alia. It's sad there wasn't more antidepressant medications available back in the day, maybe together with talk therapy and medication, she would still be with us today. Her music is her legacy.rip Ms.Hyman.
I love her songs, she was so talented, but lonely and heart broken, but she is definitely with Jesus, she was an unbelievable amazing person.. may she rest in peace.† All the Best to you ...:)
+Rafael Storm she's celebrated by those who matter. i mean, just look at all the videos people have uploaded from all over the world. trust me, her work was not in vain.
Blake Gildaphish Did I say anything about her work being in vain? Did I disparage her at all? You are seriously barking up the wrong tree; I've been a fan of hers for four decades.
Blake Gildaphish You need to hone your reading comprehension skills. Nowhere did I say that she's unsung; go back and read my post carefully. I said she left so many songs unsung, which is an entirely different situation. Please don't tell me to relax when you misinterpret something that's clearly stated.
I truly loved her music and her! She was a very beautiful woman and had such a beautiful voice! R.I.P. Phyllis Linda Hyman! I hate she didn't get the recognition that she so rightly deserves! Gone but never ever forgotten! I really loved you!
This was from a Telethon and if Phyllis sounded "exhausted" here, it's because she rushed over to the telethon right after a performance of "Sophisticated Ladies"
Phyllis very soon 24 years will have passed since that awful day you chose to stop your pain. There aren't many days that go by you don't pop into my mind, and I remind myself of how much I have lost by not having you nearby. You were the kind of friend that will remain in my heart and mind forever. Rest peacefully knowing you are loved and missed always. Your pal Kenny.
Beautiful and emotionally brilliant.... I wish she knew how many people so loved her talent.... regardless of the lack of mainstream accolades, those of us who appreciate exceptional vocal abilities know the "real" deal when we hear it, and she was definitely the real deal.... Miss you Phyllis, God rest your soul....
Also, someone commented about the microphone cord. Even well into the 1990s, Phyllis always preferred the electric mic over the cordless one, because the cordless ones were liable to give static, or "crack" her notes. Also, when speaking with Dick Clark, she sounds a bit exhausted... I don't know how else to put this, but she was "driven" by exhaustion; it kept her mind off of her vices; drugs, alcohol, men, and food... Yes, she was THAT mentally ill. I love her and I miss her so much.
Author G D Grace says: Not too many do this, but those who do, they do it effortlessly... sing with that "tear" in their voice.... that make you feel it... Gladys Knight, Luther, Atlantic Starr's Sharon Bryant, Maysa Leak, Aretha Fanklin, and quite a few others, but not all.....
Still makes me cry. Loved this song the first time I heard it in high school more than 35 years ago. Not sure it conjures up such strong feelings because I'm remembering good times or bad. Phyllis could do that to you and you knew she didn't sing anything she didn't believe. Oh Miss Hyman, I'm missing you, tell me why the road turned.....
THINKING OF YOU TONITE PHYLLIS MY DEAR FRIEND. IT,S BEEN A LONG TIME SINCE WE SHARED A LAUGH, AND I JUST WANTED YOU TO KNOW YOU,LL ALWAYS LIVE IN MY HEART. I MISS YOU PRETTY LADY. UNTIL WE MEET AGAIN ,REST WELL AND MAY GOD HOLD YOU IN HIS ARMS. YOUR FRIEND, KENNY,
Ms. Hyman is my go to when I am doubting myself. I grew up with her music and was saddened by her departure. Her music while sometimes depressing, shall live on in time. Thank you Phyllis.
Great rare footage-plus! She's singing this song live, but also with a full orchestra! I've seen her live in concert 12 times; sometimes with a 10-piece band and 3 back-up singers, sometimes with a 3-piece band and ZERO back-ups singers. But never, never with a full LIVE orchestra. This recording on her album does not have as much harp, piano, or "Miles Davis-like" trumpet, and the violins are fuller and more dramatic, too. Just RARE to see somethign like this. Oh, how I wish I were there.
Phyliss Hyman had more voice, more depth, more emotion than Whitney Houston. She should have been the Big Star!!! Phyliss had it ALL and got cheated. But we can continue to listen to her music and make Legacy a reality in her honor!!!
I luv this song..... have u ever felt this way about someone? the lyrics... wow Barry Manilow did an excellent job... it was beautifully arranged. make me cry thinking about people no longer here, etc
What a beautiful woman, a beautiful voice. This means alot to me because I lost a very good friend and when I hear this song im reminded of him and all times we shared together.
I can't put into words how I felt when I heard she passed. He muic still flows thru us, even after her departure (18 years) later. I was at work and I cried, oh I cried I was pregnant and they though something was wrong with the baby, no we lost one of the greatest women artist.
She was my favorite!!!! Gone too soon. Did anyone notice who was on the stage with her besides Dick ClaRk? A very young Geraldo Rivera and the one who kissed her was John Johnson from ABC news. He dissappeard
Loved her from song 1. Saw her at Resort Int.l in Atlantic City, NJ around 1987 ish. I still adore her and the music. The man upstairs wanted her there so we'll see her again.
That voice was like no other and I doubt there ever will be another. If I would have been her man back in the day, all she had to do for me is sing and she would have had me jumping over tall buildings....Just Beautiful....I will see you in heaven and you could sing to me forever...Love you Phyliss....Peace
That’s what a LIVE performance looks like … just hear voice, the music and a microphone. No tricks, lights, explosions, half naked dancers … or other distractions to take your attention from the lack of talent most popular singers. Luther loved Phyllis … that’s enough for me.
I love how she switched her voice from smooth to a polished growl, then she roared out that "somewhere" at 3:23 --Got-damn! She was too good!!! I wish I was more mature enough back then to understand let alone heavily appreciate her ( was a mere child) 😔 Continue to Rest well, Ms. Hyman😘
WOW. It's been years since I heard this song. Exquisitely executed. Her voice was soft and sultry. This song is a reminder of someone in my past but still care for deeply.
Phyllis, Tomorrow brings the 27th year of your departure. Time passes on, but you remain a vivid image in my heart, and mind. Rest well pretty lady. Love you always, Kenny.
