Explanation very well done. Would like to add this clarification : Inertia is resistance to Change (not resistance to motion). Moment is the product of a qunatity (mass, force, area, etc.) with its distance from a reference pt. - here it is square of distance. The term Inertia because, these terms are inversely proportional to bending or angular acceleration, etc. - area offers resistance to bending and mass resists acceleration. Note that it is Moment Of Inertia i.e., product of distance sq. of the resisiting quantity (area or mass), and not Inertia to bending moment - not a resistance to applied bending moment. In fact, they are proportional to the applied moment - higher moment of inertia requires higher moment or torque for the same amount of defelection or acceleration.

In a nutshell, your Area moment of Inertia helps to resist the change in shape when external force is applied from reference point/axis, whereas the mass moment of intertia resist the change in position of the 3D object when force is applied from reference point/axis.
@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy
@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy 4 года назад
It is not against change in shape. It is resistance against moment. There are many mistakes in your nutshell statements.
@aneesmirza9682
@aneesmirza9682 4 года назад
@@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy Hi, There is reason why we use area moment of inertia during calculations of bending stresses & strain in beams and torsional stresses & strain in shaft because those moments are trying to change the shape of the beam/shaft or any cross section under moment. And no doubt the available area resists the moment so that its shape is not distorted. Now when we talk about mass moment of inertia it is about resistance for its own motion (change in position). Example, a pendulum with a dead weight at the hanging end, 1 meter away from pivot point will be more easy to get swung as compared to 2 meters distance with same weight. That is because the mass moment of inertia is more in second case which is nothing but resistance to change its position. Well that is what I meant in my Nutshell statement. I am happy if you can correct me on this, if there is any misconception.🙂
@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy
@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy 4 года назад
@@aneesmirza9682 Hello Anees Mirza, statement which is mentioned earlier was incomplete. That is what I stated it as wrong. Ur present comment justifies your earlier statement. Since in earlier statement you mentioned resistance against motion which means it includes linear motion also but now by using an example of pendulum u state rotational motion which explains the thing clearly.

@imthiyazh6778 4 года назад
Thank you for the wonderful explanation. Could you please clarify why the radius of gyration is squared?
@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy
@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy 4 года назад
Because moment of inertia is second moment of area. Means need to multiple distance two times with area.
@prudhvi5211
@prudhvi5211 3 года назад
@@EnduranceEngineeringAcademy why need to multiply in two times. For squared I listen, somewhere else, I don't know clearly. Need to be squared, to avoid negative sign, while we squared anything we can avoid negative sign. The negative sign come on. Take an arbitrary area, consider reference line at middle, put a point on above the line and below the line, the lever arm y- axis above is postive and below is negative, to avoid negative, we create second one was second moment of area.

Hello, Good Explanation. where do we use Mass MOI and Area MOI. why there are 2. what are the advantages and disadvantages of those 2??
@venkatesh2285
@venkatesh2285 5 лет назад
Mass MoI indicates resistance of the body to angular acceleration. Area MoI indicates resistance of the body to bending. E.g.. beam If beam has more moment of inertia then it has more resistance to bending if more resistance of bending then it has less deflection if deflection is less , chances of failure is less. Thank u regards ex.prof/civil
