I'm so glad you did this video. I'm a surgical tech (scrub tech), and I'm a very kind person but I can't always show that in the O.R. because nurses, residents, and doctors (in my experience) have a tendency to look down on ST's and try to walk all over us. I agree with being a bit tough on the med students and residents, because it's so true that if they mess something up it screws me over, and the doctor blames the surgical tech before they blame themselves, the resident or medical student. Surgical techs are soooo under appreciated and represented! So shout out to ST's #backboneoftheOR :D

@Jayy R get your PCE/HCE hours from working or volunteering at a hospital. For PCE: try being a CNA, EMT, etc. HCE is less hands on with patients like, pharmacy tech, clinical researcher, scribe, etc. You can google for more. Some schools don't require HCE/PCE hours but to stand out it is encouraged u do. Get strong recommendation letters from possibly an academic reference and professional reference (from your work place), write a good personal statement and of course get a high gpa. PA schools accept >3.0 gpa. Get good grades for your pre-reqs. Get high scores for your gre, pa-cat or even mcat (some schools may not need them though), furthermore get enough shadowing hours, volunteering (it doesn't have to be from a medical facility), etc. Fill out the caspa form when it rolls. When you apply, apply the year before ur intended admission date. ☺

Hi Madalyn! When I finish this semester, I will officially be halfway (!!) through my PharmD. I LOVE when youtubers show the collaborative efforts between physicians and all others from the healthcare team. I know it's probably super different for each place you go, but I would love to continue to see the collaborative videos :) Probably a little hard to get people together for them, since everyone is crazy busy, but I can't tell you how much we enjoy seeing the interaction of the team as a whole. Thanks for doing that! :)

Awesome video again! Informative as always. There definitely is a stereotype about scrub techs where I am training, although I've personally had amazing experiences. It might also have to do with geography. People tend to be "straight shooters" up in the NE compared to the South. Nice sidestep at 2:36. Since we are in the thick of residency interview season, could you reflect a bit on your experience through this whole process in a future video (i.e. anxiety about invites, interview experience, weird questions, ranking process, etc.)? Keep up the awesome work!

Current PA student doing my OB rotation right now, and i LOVE how direct the scrub tech i work with is. Lol shell slap my hand and bark at me sometimes but I appreciate it because usually im so hyper focused on the case and what i need to do ill make mindless little mistakes that she catches and corrects. All future clinicians, your didactics will not be able to prep you for every nuance of surgery. Your STs will be a saving grace on everything from sterile procedures, anticipating what can happen, and if theyre very experienced they’ll even improve your procedural techniques big time. Keep in mind their stern mentality is reflective of the gravity of the situation, not their opinions of you or anything. Dont let it get to you!

Thank you for this video! I am a pre-PA and I work in the pediatric ICU as a nurse tech and recently I have been feeling so discouraged because the nursing environment has been so toxic in my unit. The nurses talk bad about each other and spread gossip and belittle the new nurses as well as the nurse techs. They treat us like the absolute bottom of the chain and are very condescending. I shadow an ortho PA and a urology PA and their fields are more male dominant and I have so much more enjoyed my time in those environments. It saddens me because my passion is in pediatrics but I am tired of dealing with the mean girls that have become Peds ICU nurses. I can respect someone who is “mean” in order to prevent harm coming to the patient like that scrub tech but I cannot stand mean people who just do it out of spite and in no relationship to patient advocacy but as a power trip. I really hope that I find a better work environment when I become a PA.

From a Scrub Techs perspective, I typically enjoy having residents in the field as they can be very helpful. For example, helping to get the case started by tying up our gowns before scrubbing in, helping with patient positioning, putting up light handles while we are stringing out the suction and bovie, etc. Though at times, there are new residents that demand extraneous things and are not helpful to OR staff. As far as the reputation, we are taught to be assertive yet tactful. We protect the field and the patient, we keep the case flowing smoothly by procuring all necessary sterile items, instruments and equipment, which we are usually running around for throughout the day, before setting up the entire OR while still providing quick turnovers. We take call just like Surgeons, which means we get called in the middle of the night for emergent cases. My last hospital had us take call for 7+ consecutive days every 5 weeks for the specialty. We stay late and scrub overtime on a regular basis, get called in at 1am and manage to be there at 6am or earlier for early cases. We miss major life events because we are working. We have family members pass while not being able to be there for them like we should because we are taking care of other people and do not have regular jobs. During the staffing crisis over the past two years, the Scrub Tech will many times fill in for the anesthesia tech, setting up anesthesia circuits and helping to intubate/extubate, we help the OR nurses and we turn over our own rooms because the hospital doesn't want to hire an OR assistant, we make the OR bed and supply our own case carts when sterile processing is short staffed. We literally do everything to get the case started, scrubbed and turned over and we are the ones that get screamed at because the Surgeon is in a bad mood. They go off to do their notes after the case and don't even really realize there is only one person doing everything to turn over while the RN gets the next patient. I left a hospital I once loved one month ago because of the staffing crisis. I can't do my job safely if there are no adequate supplies, instruments, or staff to help. Most hospitals are desperate right now and this is something new residents should be aware of in terms of how they interact with staff. I'm a kind and easygoing person, but if the energy in the room is tense, it's most likely because the Surgeon or anesthesia is in a mood and the OR staff is getting treated like sh*t when we are already overworked and burned out. This is just a post pandemic perspective of a Scrub Tech. But hey, what do I know.

That’s what I’m highly considering to do too, it just sucks that I’ll have to essentially add a year to my undergrad just to get my pre-PA classes. What are you doing about this/what are you doing?

I was wondering the differences between PA and doctor? What are the reasons for choosing medical school/physician profession over PA (especially since PA seems to be less time & $$)? I'm a premed and I don't think I currently have enough information to really answer this question because the PA profession seems kind of obscure to me & everything I've heard has been to convince people to go into PA so I'm not sure I have all the facts. Any comments are greatly appreciated! Also i LOVE your videos 😍😍

I volunteer at a hospital in labor and delivery and there are no pa’s in our hospital and I’m just curious if that the case for every hospital? I really want to be a PA either in pediatrics or LD in a hospital setting but I’m not sure if they have pas in hospitals
