"why not make it a mile long" quickly devolves to "why not make it a laser gun" and makes one wonder what the actual utility of a melee weapon is in an age of ranged combat
So the common misconceptions on light sabers is the are not "light" sabers. Lightsabers are, " A typical lightsaber is depicted as a luminescent blade of magnetically contained plasma about 3 feet (91 cm) in length emitted from a metal hilt around 10.5 inches (27 cm) in length." plasma is just ionized gas. That is why it doesn't keep traveling cause it is not a laser and the length is determined by the power of the magnetic field containing the plasma.
Decriminalize Darwinism you think star wars is trash yet here you are, trying to be technical with the functionality of a lightsaber. get your thoughts straight and we'll come back to you.
@Decriminalize Darwinism kyber crystals are much more than just "crystals" actually they were force attuned to the user ... Depending on the user and and crystal the lightsaber could be any color and also be more or less powerful ... But yes the crystal is the main part of the blade.. The hilt was also built around the Crystal so it cant be plasma..
"If any experienced scientist says something is possible, its most likely possible. If any experienced scientist says something is impossible, hes most likely wrong"
@@TheJazzDoll regurgitation of university memorization does not, a smart man, make. Brian is probably the worst "physicist" to be explaining physics to laymen.
"Every film does that." "WHY?!" I dunno Joe maybe because it's a fuckin' visual medium and people want to see the shit that's happening in the world. Same reason why they used tracers for the bullets on the movie Fury. Allows the audience to see the action visually rather than just audibly. The portion of the audience demanding realistic portrayal is generally smaller than the portion demanding a fun and enjoyable experience. Thus the films are tailored away from reality to better serve the spectacle.
If you want to see how LIGHTsabers are possible, you just have to look at the BEAM sabers of the Gundam franchise: a stream of plasma contained within a magnetic field which can open the field at the point the saber would contact a target. Pretty sick stuff.
That's how lightsabers work anyway except you don't need to open the magnetic field, it won't repel anything else, judt the plasma. You probably struggle to cut through magnetic materials though.
Actually, extending a blade about a mile was something experimented with when Proto Sabers were a thing. The issue is that it takes more power to use, and you’d have to be careful with it anyway since the longer it is, the easier it is to misfire. It’s sort of like the Jedi combat style of deactivating the blade during fights and reactivating it - it would be too much hassle and is worthless
I mean you can see the tracer fire with bullets when every third bullet or whatever has a marker so I guess the lasers are kind of like that every shot
I actually went to Manchester university and met the man himself brian cox! The most nicest person i have ever met and hands down smiles more than anyone i have ever seen😃
I think the name "Light Saber" is misleading. According to Star Wars canon and lore, they are actually MORE plausible and likely! A light saber is actually a beam of super heated ultra dense plasma focused and held in place by an oscillating magnetic field. Now, in theory something like that could actually work. You could theoretically contain a charged plasma with an electromagnetic field and maybe even adjust the shape... But to be clear, it isn't a "laser sword" regardless of the few times George and luke say it. It isn't a beam of light of any kind, the glowing is a side effect, not the main point.
contained plasma just causes more problems,as it would be so hot that the moment you activate it it would turn you into ashes. And if magnetic field stops heat as well, then how can it cut anything?
@@Scarlet_moon. magnetic field can easily stop heat (if it will be able to stop plasma). Maybe heat inly stuff that breaks the field? Possible in theory
@@TheMartuksxxxx we must consider that plasma is a electricaly charged gas, so a magnetic field can contain it. But heat is cinetic energy of the particles. Very hot plasma will heat up the air a lot or will emit radiation that will heat near by things. Air or infrared radiation can't be stopped by magnetics fields. A plasma sword is something very difficult to do... Maybe is possible a cold plasma that is heated up with a high intensity current only at the zone in contact with solid or liquid substances. I don't know...
Wrong Joe. Energy has mass. And it is described as centrifical Force. It may not have very much weight. But an object in motion wants to stay in in motion. An object at rest wants to stay at rest.

I saw a show once where they said having an actual light blade wouldn't be possible with what we currently know. However, they did say you could theoretically do one with super-heated plasma held within a magnetic field. This would also allow the blades to deflect each other, as the magnetic fields would repulse each other.
They make it the lasers slow for theatrical purposes so the audience can follow the battle. Otherwise it wouldnt be as engaging watching invisible lasers
it would also make the films very short when the hero gets instantly vaporized 2 seconds into the first fight when taking a laser beam to the chest before he can even try to do his dramatic leap to 1 side.
Brian Cox: “yeah so my point was kind of just like , light can bounce of lig..” Joe: “yeah but there would have to be a mirror or somthing at the end?!” Brian:”yeah I agree with you my point was really just about how interesting it was that light can bounce off li...” Joe:”But Brian there would have to be somthing at the end” Brian: “yeah that’s engineering what I’m really saying just as a physicist is just about how light can...” Joe: “brian, listen, somthing would have to be at the end” Brian: “yeah ur really picking apart the holes in my design I’m really just talking about how the light tho can like bounce off..” Joe: “Somthing 👏 at 👏the 👏 end 👏 “
Just saying that light can bounce off of light doesn't mean anything though, water can interact with water but when you use a hose it doesn't form a water saber.
ZephaniahNoah it’s stated in the movie that they are losing their power and connection to the force, this is the scene where mace windo and yoda are talking
@@pedm5657 I believe the reason they are losing their connection is because there order is a gross perversion of the force, like the Dark Side. Quigon Jinn was the last Jedi of his time. He acted on the will of the force. Prequel era Jedi bent the force to their will, used it as a weapon. Jedi became generals, warriors and diplomats, all to further their power. Mace Windu was a key factor in this change. Jinn refused to save Anakin from slavery, not because he was cruel, but because at that time, he belived he was sent their for another reason. When he realised otherwise, he used the force to save Anakin, condeming his mother to death (ultimately). Jinn refused to fight a war for Naboo, stating "I will be your bodyguard, but I will not fight a war for you". A direct contrast to the Jedi Order. Mace, Yoda and every other master failed to detect the growing darkness. Jinn did within seconds of Phantom Menace starting. So did a young Obi Wan. The order in their hubris denied it, because they couldn't detect it at all. The Force forsook the order, that is why they were blind. Had Obi Wan continued Jinns ways post death, Anakin might not have fallen. Oh and Yoda - "Destroy the Sith, we must". Genocide. Balance doesn't come from genocide. Only Sith deal in absolutes.
Toasty Baps I’ve seen many theories that if it was Jinn training anankin he would have been able to convince him at the end of the movie. Star Wars has such a long and confusing story line that it’s really entertaining to read and listen to things the movies don’t show us (at least not outright). Either way I wasn’t trying to say I know a lot about the subject, I don’t but I was just simply giving a theory as to why they seemed to not be able to do what previous Jedi could
Also, in starwars, the guns and rifles they run around with aren't called lasers. They are called blasters. Because they are blasting a burst of charged plasma (which isn't really outside our range of technical capability either). That's been in the expanded universe books and the movies for literally decades. Remember the bartender in the first movie? "No blasters, no blasters!!" They even use the word blast in place of damn. "Blast it, Biggs, where are you??" Only time the word laser is used is for the deathstar, and 'turbolasers'. The turrets on huge battle ships and stations. Remember when they were going down the deathstar trench, and when the turbolasers started shooting, all you saw from the cockpit view was full screen flashes of light? Watch it again and pay attention, and you'll see things like this spread thru out the first 6 movies they made, and in literally DOZENS of best selling novels (you know, the ones that convinced lucas to come back and do more star wars movies in the first place, and had to have his complete and utter approval before publishing?)
Jules verne was the sci fi writer who got a lot of things correct including the best place for launching into space in the U.S is southern florida and nuclear powered subs
You can see tracer rounds on bullets, so ofcourse you could see an entire bolt made out of light! And only Jedi are fast enough to dodge blaster bolts anyone else is screwed.
Anase Skyrider its actually both watch Obi wan and Qui Gonn in Phantom Menace they run from Droidekas at about 80 mph. They can use the force to enhance their physical abilities.
@@Apple23 I thought that was just a speed run technique, not necessarily hyperfast combat. We never see them do that again in the movies (including at the end of Phantom). Their saber fights are slightly speed up, but they never move super speed. Maybe it's different in the expanded universe, since as I understand it, that's where the premonition-combat stuff comes from.
Anase Skyrider Also think of all the force jumping through all the movies. They are enhancing their physical abilities through the force. And before you say they are just using their telekenis to lift themselves higher remeber this, everytime a jedi uses their telekenis for either a lightsaber or an apple or C3PO they have to focus and channel their power but when they jump 30 feet its instant. They are stronger, faster and have more endurance than what is normal for whatever species that jedi or sith was born as.
Aside from some ships falling near or in orbits, I don't think we see any falling down or up or sideways. The explosion is usually the center of the ship and the 2, 3 or 4 pieces fly off in different directions.
Maybe it's due to the ships loss of power/engines fighting gravity? Maybe its because they are breaking up, therefore have less combined mass/gravity stuff (science!) So they are simply being pulled towards a larger astral body. Maybe both? Maybe they were hit at a weird angle, pushing the ship down and due to 0 gravity and no propulsion, the force of the impact is sending it down? All 3?
I like to think lightsaber is a misnomer. I think a plasma contained in some kind of field makes more sense. That brings me to the blasters in Star Wars. They aren't lasers. They are plasma projectiles.
@@brainmind4070 it is, I get that. But my OCD still insists I try to reconcile these silly conflicts for internal peace and continuity. Lol... Too much?

The length of a flame on a TIG torch is focused to a length useful for doing the job properly . A beam of light is just that a beam shooting from point A to a point determined by the strength of the beam source....but if the source was say a tuned plasma cutter , such as a plasma torch for cutting metal...but....ramped up and made all in one of a unit to be handheld.....I am sure this is a SHIT TON more to it but why can't it be done again?

They don't use anything. They're not real. The reason you can see them is that ILM added the animation for them. His explanation is correct. An audience needs to see and hear special effects that are not accurate to how something would actually work in order to make the story engaging.
they really said covenant is better than prometheus dude. Prometheus is a great movie and it set up the ending so well and covenant just fucked everything up, they did a complete 180 on the story with some bullshit ending, completly forgetting about everything prometheus set up.
