Thank you, this video is without doubt the most detailed and easy to follow from any others on RU-vid. You speak slowly and clearly and explain every stage perfectly. I really appreciate you taking the time to share this video to help people like me, who are new to DMR. Again thank you. Kind regards. David. DO7DAD
@@radiosification Thanks Ben. Great thing is, you never went off ´´Topic´´ once. Too many people on RU-vid start off ok, then start talking about a cat, or a new motorbike etc. But you always start on topic. Again Thank you- (Have subscribed to your Channel)
Thanks for making this simple enough so I, as a new comer to DMR Hotspots can understand. It beats the heck out of the lousy documentation that came with the device. Good show, and thank you.
Hello mate, After spending 7 hours on a second dodgy jumbo hotspot(faulty antenna) and then replacing the antenna as a last resort I was up and running thanks to your videos , it would have been impossible without it, thanks for your help 🍷
Thank you so much, I purchased one on eBay but the directions were not much. You are the difference between it working like it is now and ending up in my junk drawer and me thinking I got ripped off! THANK YOU!
Thanks for the video. I got nowhere using CHROME but switched to OPERA and was able to connect. I also had to reboot after changing my wireless network for it to accept the change.
Great video. You forgot.. 1) which BM server should we connect to 2) other than Radio ID, do we have to register with BM server? 3) when I keyed up to test echo, i immediately get a low freq tone. You might cover some common mistakes
Hi, thank you for this video. Very informative, very well explained. However, have you got any idea why the OLED display stops working after a while? Apparently it is me having configured something incorrectly, but I have no idea what. Any ideas, please? Thanks. 73 de M6VMO.
Great tutorial, however, my hotspot didn’t require me to enter a password to log into it or to the dashboard. How do I enable that? I don’t want anyone connecting to my setup page.
I have built 10 if various types for me and mates jumbo spots are great for size and portability and light power consumption. And a blast to use, enjoy and see you on dmr
hi, ive followed you vid step by step and nothing works. hotspot will not connect to wifi and the screen briefly shows "start up" which then goes off and then nothing. Any ideas, Im all ears...........
So frustrating the website doesn't look like this at all any more! Had my DMR up and running for a couple of years, then didn't use it through lock down, took it out and now its not connecting - the Hot spot can see my Radio and call sign comes up, but theres an issue - tried going into the website and follow your video but thats changed. So frustrated with this - Ive forgotten what the point of DMR is You cant actually use it with out an internet connection - immediately email Skype and Whatsapp become much better free tools. Is there an updated tutorial that reflects 2022 set up process?
I can't see how the website would have changed if you didn't manually update the hotspot's software. Additionally, you're completely wrong about DMR not working without an internet connection. Only your hotspot doesn't work. DMR can be used to talk to other radios over the air just the same as an FM radio can, and can also use repeaters and even linked repeater systems without using the internet, since repeaters can be linked together through other means such as microwave links. There is not an updated tutorial, at least not from me. I'll check if the website actually has changed.
I have plugged in the hotspot to the computer. It is powered up. But how do I access the hotspot? Usually I type in an IP address. The directions are rather poor at that. Mark KB3Z
You jumped from plugging the Jumbo in and then to programming and I followed right to the dark screen 1:24 and then how did you get that screen up with the small menu in the lower right corner. Can't seem to get that far.. Seems like a big gap in the tutorial here.. 73 Doug
Hi Ben, Excellent video thank you, glad I caught Lewis live session and got your details. I am trying to get my head around digital stuff very slowly. Question, I downloaded the PiStar image and it’s running but do I need hardware like you have e.g. antenna etc? I gave the SharkRF and not made much progress yet. Not sell the Shark and focus on PiStar. I know the Raspberry Pi as I have a couple and live tinkering with them. Thank you.
Hi Ray. Yes. It won't work with only the raspberry Pi. You need the mmdvm hat which sits on top of the raspberry pi. You can find them on ebay. The hat is the bit that actually transmits the RF, so without it you can't expect this to work at all.
@@radiosification Thank you Ben. I know sounds a bit daft question and thought it might but I couldn't find the info on the PiStar site. I have been watching your videos over (and others too) so will sit down one weekend to try and set it all up, may just stick with my SharkRF, newbie buying all the stuff, doh!
@@rayerdinc2441 hi ray the shark does basic the same but with different hardware and software. If you have the original shark it lacks wifi that jumbo spot has so it's better suited for home close to your router. If you have shark 2 it has wifi so it's even closer to the jumbo spot.
No you don't. DMR can be used with a business radio licence or even licence free with PMR446 if you buy 0.5W radios. Anyway you misunderstood what I was saying. All I was saying was that any amateur can use these hotspots, you don't need a certain class of licence.
@@radiosification Bit of a grey area isn't it ? if you leave your home with the hotspot still connected would it not class as unattended operation 🤔 it would be transmitting presumably on 70cms if connected to a reflector or talk group. Unattended operation can only be used on Intermediate and Full licenses if I recall from my studies. Just something to be aware of, if you're with the hotspot then no issues of course for foundation holders.
How did you get it to connect to wifi?? I followed your video and it WILL NOT connect to anything. mobile phone home wifi etc . And now I can't get in to the pi star set up to try wifi again it doesn't come up on a wifi scan. I'm going to have to re flash the image just to be able to try and connect to a wifi point any ideas???
Pardon my ignorance but I assume a hotspot is just a bridge between your DMR radio and your router. And when you say"out and about" you mean within range of another router that you have previously set the access details of?
Hi, I've just ordered a Jumbo Hotspot PI Star, this is to put in the car as I already have a Open Spot 2. The Open Spot uses Time Slot 1, I now see the Pi Star looks like it uses TS 2... is this correct, can you change or frig the PiStar to work on TS1, otherwise you could have to have two sets of TG's in your radio one set for OS using TG1 and one set for PiStar on TG2... I have searched the internet for any info on this and nothing... I can't believe I am the first person to come across this, there must be a fix or something.... any ideas... Cheers.
Hi for some strange reason, after I modified my similar hotspot etc I do not see the standby MMDVM in display. Only if I transmit. It is a bit of a problem if we need to find out if the hotspot is in and in standby. The only good side is that the hotspot does not get too hot. Any ideas? 73 de 9J2RD
hi ,i have a MMDVM and have followed the instructions to get to the computer log in but it seems not to be working, i have updated the software onto a new sd card and added my hub log in file but still no joy. could my hotspot be faulty. it lights up ok with green light and a red flashing light but does not seem to work as it does not connect .
Hi guys , I have this hotspot, at present it’s not finding WiFi/pi-star device plus the oled is blank, 3 green lights plus the red service light is flashing , is it knackered ?
It won't be completely broken unless you've done something physically to it like applied a high voltage. It's probably just a software issue or sometimes the SD card goes bad. Try reloading pi-star following my pi-star upgrade video
What is missing from this video is how to get the Jumbo Spot to see the wifi. I have tried every way to get there, including using an RJ45 to micro usb adapter and connecting directly to my router. No luck. I have watched 32 different videos' and no one either gives a link to the pi-star dash board in the drop down, no do they say in an all wireless set up hot to get the hot spot to pair with the jumbo spot. Everyone just assumes it does, and that is how you start your video as well. If the user can't get the hot spot to see the network everything else is useless.
Hi, I think I answered my own question, delving through the user manual... yes I know, last resort... in simplex mode in the OS you can use any., 1 or 2, just means I'll have to change the radio channels to TS2.. only 89 of them... HI
In simplex mode it doesn't matter which you use because there is no synchronisation. The radio on the other end has no clue which timeslot is 1 and which is 2. It will receive from either. (Unless you are specifically using dual capacity direct mode, Google it for more info)
P=VI. Wattage is P (power) in Watts. V is voltage (5V). I is current in Amps. You can work out how much power that is since you already have the voltage and amperage
I've looked all through your videos, cannot find the video you mentioned on how to setup DMR on the hotspot. I'm sure I missed it but can you please let me know where to find t? I have mine all set up, connected to wifi, but when I attempt to transmit, it is not showing on the Brandmeiser network.
Sorry about that, I haven't got around to making it yet. That sounds like an Rx offset problem. Try adjusting the RX offset to make sure your transmission shows up on the dashboard and the BER is low.
Also, watch the slot that you are using - it only works on slot 2a nd also the correct colour code. When you tx to the hotspot you should see its status change to receiving. However I guess you have it working now.
@@radiosification You are correct! When I set mine up I'd read somewhere that it only supports slot 2 but yes, there is a setting in the advanced options to select either. I wish I'd know that when I set it up as I had my radio's on slot 1 for using with my Openspot2 which does also support either. Thanks!
Hi Ben, bought the jumbo hotspot but not quite there with the settings, whens the 2nd part on setting up the dmr coming? my dashboard showsmy call sign as RF in the SRC box where as other people calls show as Net, are my settings wrong?
Thanks for the comment. I haven't been very motivated lately to work on videos. Been busy with other things. I'll try to get it done sometime soon but if you have any specific questions in the meantime I'm happy to answer them. Which network are you trying to use, and which talkgroup?
Hi Ben, this dmr stuff is a complete learning curve, i have tried the DMR Gateway setting in the pistar configuration page which then comes up with a UK 2341 sub menu, is this what i use in the uk? do i then configure my md380 digital contacts for the relevant talkgroups?
I have a MMDVM. Last night I updated the MMDVM radio board. It was successful and everything is working. However for some reason I can no longer make changes in my configure area. I click Apply Changes, the screen returns and all looks normal but the changes did not happen. Back to original configuration. Any ideas? I tried an update from the configuration screen and I get errors. Any idea what I should try? I did do a backup prior.
If I were you I'd just wipe the SD card and start over. You can follow my video on how to update pi-star. It's the same process. Look on my channel for that video
@@radiosification yes, I decided rather than spend a lot of time trouble shooting the problem it was easier and faster to just put the software on the SD card again. The thing people should do is once they are up and running well they should make a back up. This will save a lot of time by restoring from you backup. It took about 5 mins to restore including putting the software on the SD card. Its working perfectly. Ken
Thanks for the suggestion. Could you give some more details please? What specifically is different from this video? I used my hotspot probably about a week or two ago and didn't notice any change
You can put the WiFi access point SSID and password in a file on the SD card and the hotspot will read from that and connect. Your computer will need to be connected to the same network (by ethernet) to configure it after still
You can't save up for a few months? Or I mean even getting a loan from the bank would probably be better. I don't know what you're paying but usually these rental things are a rip off. You could even buy an old office computer on eBay for like $70
Follow your tutorial right up until the end. Now I'm going to use DMR, but I'm hanging now, you said there was a split in the tutorials one for both Yaesu and DMR. I found the Yaesu one but not the DMR :( Help!!
Sorry, I haven't got around to making the DMR one yet. There are so many DMR radios to choose from I didn't know which one to use for the tutorial, because each radio will be slightly different
@@radiosification Anytone 878 Plus. Though with s few headaches along the way< I have got it set up and working thanks :) Though last night the card got corrupted and had to start again today...lol
Thanks for your interest. Tbh I lost interest for a while. It takes hours and hours of effort to produce each video and if they only get a little engagement such as views, likes, comments and also ad revenue, it doesn't feel worth it
