This song resonated with me like no other did in quite a while. Accordingly, I have spent so much attention to every aspect of this arrangement, that I would consider this a pillar in my piano journey. Made in Abyss itself is also such a special work of fiction to me, that I just had to pour my entire soul into this! I have a feeling that this anime will forever be my favorite. As a matter of fact, it was the first anime I ever watched, and the OP of season 1 was the first anime song I ever played. Needless to say, the anime bears a really special place in my heart and so I had to try my best to give it justice.
The stars also truly aligned here; with the anime still being absolutely phenomenal; the ending underlining the overall theme and plot so well that it makes me want to cry every time I hear it; my motivation to work on such a larger project finally having kicked in; and of course, the bag of knowledge I have gathered on the piano over the years. This might very well be the second time I managed to fully realize my ideas for a cover: The first time being my Horimiya ED cover ( • [Piano] Yakusoku - Hor... ) which I would also consider a pillar in my journey.
For the most part I stuck surprisingly close to the original song because it was already packed with so much wonderful material and variations to work with. The tough part then was to decide and pick which elements should make it into the piano version such that I can maintain a good flow and pacing all throughout (but that is of course a general problem for piano arrangements, it is just that some songs make it easier than others).
One aspect which did cause me trouble though: The overuse of sustain pedal. The original song has such a very atmospheric and reverb aura going on, that it did not feel right to leave out the pedal for larger chunks of the piece. But at the same time, I could not help but feel that the arrangement started to become quite dull because of it. Thus began a rather difficult hunt to find spots that could do without and I am quite happy with how it turned out. Said spots being right at the start 0:00, at the second chorus 1:52, after the bridge at 2:50 and after the last chorus at 4:09. They are pretty short sections but still allowed to break the pedal's dominance.
Oh yeah, you might also notice the video looking extremely different than usual. Well, I did not have access to the camera I shoot them with these days, so I had to go back to using my phone; back to the old setup I shot my first few videos with. Sadly though, it doesn't do a "true" zoom using lenses but rather does a digital zoom and scales the image, which leads to an extremely pixelated and noisy image. I have tried my best to create and apply some sort of retro VHS filter to make it look passable. I also cropped and added black bars to the video, because I could not frame the piano well enough with the phone setup, which lead to a huge empty space in the right half of the video. So I used this to bring the piano more into focus and I think it doesn't look too bad with the vintage look I have going here. I did what I could given the horrendous video quality, I hope it looks fine. The audio quality is still the same as ever though!
