Many thanks for your analysis made measure by measure of Bach's cello suite. You are very inspiring when you sort out Bach's thoughts when he wrote this wonderful piece.❤

My request!... The "lost" cello suite in my opinion. The 998 lute prelude. It reminds me of the other seemingly simple gems you explore. A constant deception of rhythm, all done melodically. Triplets and duplets constantly mingling. If you are not highly familar I suggest Tatyana Ryzhkova here on youtube... BWV 998 prelude.

Thank you so much for this, and for making the score available. I'm a beginner, but have been obsessed with this piece for a while and have painstakingly learned about 2/3 of it from another score for piano (over about 6 months!). I'm just curious - in your score you have the second note of the piece (the D) played by the L hand, even though it's then played by the R as notes 6 and 8. The score follows the same pattern pretty much wherever that characteristic motif is used. In watching your other performance video, though, I _think_ you use the R hand for these notes. Is that the case, and do you have any thoughts on the matter? As a beginner I'm obviously trying to do what is easiest for me, but I also feel it flows better for me if I use the R hand for all these notes. Thank you. 😊

Hi - thanks for watching - this is an excellent question which is hard to answer concisely but here it goes. Dividing the cello part between 2 hands required many decisions and my primary considerations were: 1) presenting Bach’s text clearly and 2) thinking of what is best for a beginner/intermediate pianist. In that context, I chose to put the D in the LH because 1) it visually highlights the “mordent” BAB in the RH hand as a separate element 2) even though for a beginner it may seem more “comfortable” to play all Ds in the RH, my written layout will bring in more arm movement, and therefore more flexibility and relaxation. Most amateurs play with a lot of tension without realizing that. That being said, you are correct that I may play it differently myself. In the introductory comments to the complete score I wrote that the distribution between the hands is not “written in stone.”Most advanced/professional pianists take that for granted and make their own choices.
