It's really awesome to watch your work and how you improvise your tools to make the job easier and faster. You are such a talented person, and your master skill set is beyond words can describe. Everything has been done by hands and looks fantastically consistent across the board. If we're close by, I would love to drop off my keybed for you to rebuild. Cheers!

Always Steinways. Would be nice to see an August Forster or a Schiedmayer being restored.

What benefit would grinding down the hammer heads provide? Less weight?

The best way is to use Spurlock jigs. Before you glued the hammers head.

I've got a better way. Yours does have the risk to damage the flange. Especially when there are others of less skill. I'll make a video of mine on next set of hammers i install.

Dear fellow technician, I am glad that this video inspired you to record a video to show another way to do this task. It would also be great to hear your explanation in addition to showing the video to clearly understand your point for this particular process in piano restoration. I completely agree with you that people without skills could make a permanent damage on a piano. Please let me know when this video will be available for viewing. Best regards, Gene

I like your cutting tool for the excess of shanks. For sanding the tails and give the curve, I use the bosch pro belt sander gbs75 ae which is great, its width is usually the size of a hammer section so it's easy to make a perfect line. Give it a try. And i suggest using 2 additionnal clamps for the middle of bass and middle sections. You grind the metal of the clamp so you can freely disassemble the clamp and run it between the shanks. It gives extra support for sanding the tails on the big hammer sections. I think installing 2 clamp rails and working on the tails after gluing is the most efficient way ,and it virtually erases some minor mistakes made during gluing. All the best, quentin

and that's a horrible way to make the hammer arch on the tail.

Mr. Chernobieff, You are absolutely right that it looks pretty scary when you work with a high speed grinders. But the most important is the result that you achieve in the end. Best regards, Gene

Chris, it looks to me as if he's got it down really well & his accuracy is superb - different strokes for different folks. Horrible, it is not!
