I also work as a piano tuner and technician in Germany. This is the best and most modern way of repairing I‘ve ever seen. Some people don’t check the shanks for rising vertically before glueing the heads. Then they correct this afterwards and use heat for bending resp. twisting the shanks. It’s awful. You are the first one I’ve seen here on youtube doing it correctly without heat treatment, which is completely unnecessary. Concerning the light hammer heads : There remains the question if one really wants to have these light hammers in an action. Probably the action ratio is very high in the vintage Steinway, which I wouldn’t like to have. I would consider instead using shanks with 17mm knuckle distance (instead of 16) and maybe other modifications do get a more modern touch which is easier to control by the player. With heavier heads you also get a more soft sound usually. But all these things you know already I assume. Congratulations for this great work ! (Sorry for event. mistakes in my english as I am german)

Another excellent video! Thank you so much! Your RU-vid channel deserves many more subscribers, because it is without any doubt one of the best channels (if not the best) on the restoration of vintage pianos/grand pianos. Unfortunately, most of the methods and tools you are demonstrating can't be used for the restoration of my Richard Lipp grand piano from the 1880s, because the hammers and hammershanks are completely different in shape and have a square hole at the end of the shank IN FRONT(!) of the hammerhead through which a check operates, which is basically just a bended metal pin that interacts with a patch of thick felt attached to the hammerhead for quick repetition of the hammer. This old Lipp action is a really unique system that I have never seen in any other grand piano. I need to replace at least one shank and hammerhead in my Lipp grand piano, but there is just no way I can get a new one, because of the odd shape of the shanks. If I had the right piece of wood, I could ask a skilled carpenter to carve a replacement shank for me, but I have no idea if that would even work. Even if the new shank would exactly match the shape of the original shank, how do I know if it would be as strong as the original? I wish I could just 3D-print a new hammershank! Any suggestions? Thanks a lot!

Excellent tools! May I ask why you shape the hammer tails only after you glued the hammer heads to their shanks? Or have I misunderstood something?

Does Steinway go to these exacting measures?

I have no doubt that Steinway in their process of manufacturing new pianos probably got even better technology. That's why Steinway is so famous in the music industry. But restoration of the vintage Steinway pianos - it's a different issue. And our goal is to show piano technicians how it can be done.

All of the measurements are taken from the Vintage Steinway piano. Let me know if you have any additional questions.
