This tutorial is about the piano technique used in playing thirds effectively. Playing thirds in piano technique presents two challenges: the challenge of coordinating the fingers so that they go down together, and the challenge of bringing out the top note of the thirds louder than the bottom note.
This video is part of a series I’m doing about the Dohnányi finger exercises I play and teach the most, out of the book "Essential Finger Exercises" by Ernst von Dohnányi.

Great video. Could I suggest playing the left hand, mirroring what the right hand plays? That is, starting with f-sharp and d (with thumb and three) and proceeding down in b minor, then b major, then b-sharp diminished (with e), then c diminished (with f) - then b-flat minor etc. In the original version, the two hands are playing different patterns. It sounds dissonant (?like Bartok) if you play it hands together, but the right hand can help the left as they are playing exactly the same disposition of black and white notes.

Dear Prof: can you give a general sense of how much time you would spend on this in a day where you practiced 2 hours in total? For one who double/ strikes! Thanks!

Tom, This is really hard to quantify but generally I recommend doing exercises like this between 5-10 minutes a day and doing it over a long enough time that it starts to take effect. I don't like to use a lot of practice time on exercises, unless it's directly related to repertoire I'm currently playing. 😊🎹
