PiCAN2 CAN-BUS Driving a RX8 Instrument Cluster

I do not understand how the CAN signals go through without having a ground. I am clearly missing a point here. Could you explain? Just bought the PiCAN2 and have a mazdaspeed6 cluster lying around to play with.

Hi dear , I have done Toyota 2JZGTE engine swap to my Mazda RX8 and I don't use Mazda ECU anymore . as a result the cluster is not working anymore and looks like christmas tree. I can't go with aftermarket ECU at the moment because it's so expensive .how can I solve this issue and make it working according what you showed in this video?
