"Pick of the Day" - 1957 Danelectro U1 and 1961 Fender Super Amp

We've got a blast from the past for you today - a 1957 Danelectro U1 in the rare Aqua finish! These simple instruments have a unique sound and have been used by countless major artists over the years, and for good reason. A single pickup with variable tone controls, metal nut, and wood bridge all add up for a sound you won't find anywhere else. We've got a killer amp today as well, one of the cleanest 1961 Fender Super Amps you'll ever see - all original, with a killer sound through two 10" Jensen speakers with a super lush vibrato circuit. This was brought to us by a customer who purchased it from the original owner, and it is just to die for! Today we have Karl plugging these two in together for the demo.

Been only 2 months and I'm back for another view. I can't get over the age of it. My excellent condition 98 has really grown on me in just a few months. It has a natural neck and headstock with a nice tint that I think is beautiful. There's just a simple elegance to the U1 and the Coke bottle headstock is perfection. I think I can legitimately say there's something magic about mine, because the fist time I changed it's strings I crossed my fingers and left it's bridge plate in it's collapsed (?) condition hoping that with it being floating, and with me lowering it's screws about a millimeter that intonation would be okay. It actually turned out perfect. It couldn't sound sweeter. IMHO the intonation is better than what I can get with all my other guitars!

Great demo Karl. Gotta say I do agree, this guitar in this color/year is like Hen's Teeth! Great condition and great find. The '61 Fender Super is amazing. Thank you for the great content.

Thanks so much, Cramster. Being asked to demo these historic instruments is a great honor and I always try to do right by whatever guitar and amp I'm presented with. It's both nerve-wracking and big fun at the same time!

Unbelievably cool! I play the exact same year/color guitar in the double pickup version and love it to bits. I do some recording, and it is actually very surprising how often this guitar gets used. The old Danelectros are way better instruments than most people believe.

Very Cool. Love my Danos, and Fenders. Running a vintage '59 dc-2 through 64 and 65 Princeton non-verbs and a 64 Reverb unit. Lucky enough to have a Dan Armstrong modified one too.;D

Amazingly cool combination of amp and guitar. I'd definitely dig it. I'm not judging the price, as it's a rare piece in that condition and color, but due to the novelty and limited use, I'd go to one of the cool Danelectro reissues.

I just received a beautiful deep purple 1998. It's near mint. The metal bridge plate is sagging (of course) but intonation is good, so won't mess with it for now. One bad thing is a few dot markers are recessed; one quite a bit. One thing I'm just noticing is that it's this edition of the U1 that has a natural maple neck, which I prefer? I'm not sure if any other editions do?

MERCY! I just became aware that the reissues have 14" fretboard radius (after acquiring a beautiful deep purple 1998....lol). Did the originals actually use this comparatively (to Fender and Gibson electrics) flat profile?

I've got a couple of Dano reissues that are really great guitars. Who says you need some fancy wood to make a good sounding guitar? Danelectro found choice "tone plastic" to make theirs guitars!

Interesting comparison: if you check out the copper 1959 U1 on Emerald City's website, notice the pickup placement vs this 1957. I think this 57 is quite a bit more neck forward. (EDIT: Just watched video for the 59, it's a short-scale version of the U1 with the pickup in the "middle" position. Presumably a normal 1959 U1 would have the "neck position" pickup.) I have a 58 copper U2 and it's a top 5 all-time guitar for me.

I just got a 1998 reissue. It has a natural maple neck, rosewood saddle, and single concentric control. Made in Korea. The pickup is angled and in the middle at the waist of the body. I think I've seen other reissues with it closer to neck.
