"Pick of the Day" - 1959 Gibson Les Paul Std w/1966 Fender Pro Reverb + 1974 Marshall Super Lead

Today's pick of the day is a bit more expansive than normal - starting with an incredible 1959 Gibson Les Paul Standard which some of you may have seen before ( • "Pick of the Day" - 19... ), we're handing it off to our friend Aaron Hiebert to run through two very different amps! For a clean sound out of a small combo, we're using a 1966 Fender Pro Reverb, and for the high gain sound we've pulled out a 1974 Marshall 1959 JMP Super Lead 100w head and 1966 Marshall cabinet - neither of which should disappoint. The Marshall is cranked and we're taming it to levels that won't cause your ears to bleed using the included THD Hot Plate attenuator (a blessing for any tube amp player from small combos to big stacks!).

I come back to this video all the time because I have never heard a tone like 7:11 - 7:35 anywhere else, ever. You won't hear that kind of tone on an album again anytime soon.

Beautiful, harsh overdriven rock guitar sound. Pure eargasm man. Reminds me of UFO and other classics. Modern sound is sterile, flat and dead. Too polished. Unnatural. At least for me.

Agreed. I'm racking my brain and I don't know man. It's one of those one off, lightening striking real, real close kinda tones! I'd love to have been in the room just to experience the sonic boom of a '59 burst and that beautiful Marshall...wait, better yet I'd rather be playing that rig instead of listening, No disrespect because this dude's playing is on point and fucking killer!! Marshall literally defined that classic rock tone, the 1959 SLP for late 60's through the 70's and the JCM800 for the 80's, all other British amps were chasing that sound other than Vox maybe

I have to say, I'm very pleased with the recent inclusion of the Pro Reverb Amp. That amp , to me, is the best blackface era amp for anyone in a rock band. It has the smaller Vibrolux OT which really shines when cranked, beautiful sag and breakup, with plenty of clean headroom to accommodate even the most expansive pedal boards. I'd say the best BF era amp is the the Vibrolux, but in a band situation, sometimes you can max it out. That's where the Pro Reverb shines. Probably the most underrated Fender amp of all time.

It's a 40 watt bassman circuit but with tube rectifier and verb and trem. One of my favorites!!! It was called the baby twin back in the day.

I own a '72 JMP 50 and I got official noise complaints levied at two clubs in town. I was playing it as quietly as possible. ..and I was only using a 2x12. Lol Those things are either off or blowing your head off. There's no such thing as a "bedroom volume" on an old Marshall with the channels bridged. I really only ever get to use it in the studio or at really big outdoor shows.

Justin Garcia the volume knob is probably on 7. Grab a r9 and roll the volume off a bit and you could not tell the difference

@@howlinhopkins4075 Hard to describe but I think he means it's like a harmonic ghosting of each note, like a shimmer around everything you play. Even that isn't really a great description on my part but I think that's what he's getting at.

‘59 Les Paul with that Marshall is one of my favorite sounds in the world; second to Eddie Van Halen playing on one with his 50k mid pot and variac down to 70V (in the studio not live).

I’ve got a stock 71 1987/68 G12M halfstack , and straight into the bottom left input with bright volume on 6 and Hotplate like in the video on -12db, it’s still pretty loud(about band volume) I should imagine a cranked 100 watter into the top input would be brutal.

Are talking about the saddles being so low, sitting down in the ABR-1 bridge? Yeah, I'd like to know as well. Looks like the bridge itself is raised up pretty high. Still though, at the end of the day it's just a really old guitar that they were able to make playable with the parts/components that are (presumably) original. A Great Instrument for sure.

Loved the demo with the Pro Reverb, however I think the Marshall would have been way rounder and not as ice pickey with bridged channels and not just the bright input

With the Fender Pro Reverb sounded quite nice i must say, even if PAFs are not my choice for humbuckers (i prefer T-Tops, Patent Number, NY Minis, Guild ones, Fender Wide Range and so on), with the Marshall sounded truly hideous, boxy and shrill at the same time.

Scott Cramer what speakers and what settings? I have a 66 also and i gotta keep the bass on 2 or 3 if I crank it with a les Paul. With a strat I can keep the bass on 6 or 7

It's incredible how beautiful is sound of all this old gear. When I hear new recordings, new bands, they all sound the same, modern digital recording is shit, sound is sterile and dead. I listen to rock classics like Steppenwolf, Skynyrd, Who etc... and ffs the sound is so alive on these recordings. It is not ideal but it is alive.

It's really everything. All the gear they used, the tape machines, how good o' musicians they were, and the fact that because of so much of the music recordings sounding great to begin with, they had to do minimal editing afterwards to make it sound good. It sounds natural because it was. Modern gear is cheap, made in China, and musicians have gotten lazy knowing that if take 1 sucks, they can just pitch correct it or delete and repeat without having to rewind a bunch of tape. There's nothing stopping us though from going back and learning from these musicians and the gear that was so lovingly made

It's really sad that the majority of great vintage guitars like this one end up being trophies of some rich person...even if they play it and truly enjoy it, they aren't making music with it by being inspired by the instrument. Bonamassa is an exception.

Oh it took me a second, but I was like this guy's ears are toast. You can't get that drive out of a Super Lead without it being on 10, AND it's 100w...ouch! Then I saw the attenuator. Also a Les Paul through a Marshall is THE rock guitar sound, but I've heard them sound pretty damn good through some Fender's too. I'd like to hear a '59 through a Top Boost cranked.

I had that exact same amp ('65 Pro Reverb), same Jensens and everything....and STUPIDLY sold it because I thought I wanted a Twin. Worst amp decision I've ever made. It now belongs to Lindy Fralin.

Actually, now I remember more clearly I traded with him for a Victoria Tweed Super because I thought I had to have one of those for smaller/medium gigs and maybe a Twin for larger ones. Dumb. the Pro Reverb was wonderful for medium gigs, and any larger place would be mic'd.

Roll off the presence, roll off your tone control, shift the eq, use the normal channel instead of the bright channel, change the volumes of both channels still because they actually do something even when not plugged in to both channels
