You know that influence and struggle isn't the only facor that goes towards character writing right? I feel like you put a lot of characters over others just because of those 2 reasons.

Not gonna lie, a character's importance isn't about how impactful they were to the story but rather their character nuances that made them good. For example, meruem is an amazing character not because he was a direct threat to gon and was "important" to others or anything, but because of how godly the quality of his character arc was, which is by far the most important characteristic for determining what character is great or not. Because to be honest, luffy is your average shonen mc. Sure he has impact but that doesn't really have anything to do with the quality of his character, and in terms of that, he's pretty one dimensional and you never really have to think beyond what's being shown to understand his writing which isn't really reasonable to put him above a lot of other characters. He's just a cool likable guy at the end of the day, and that's not enough.

I do feel like some of the characters were compared too much in terms of feats of power and just how much have they accomplished where if you look at a character like Mob I don’t feel like he’s accomplished as much but I feel like he’s one of the best written character

Obviously this entire discussion is purely subjective, but I will say that a lot of people really underestimate the Dragon Ball characters. Its not generally as blatant as many other characters, but the subtle development is absolutely there, most specifically from the start of the series up through the Cell saga. Heck, even outside of that indicated time frame, I would argue that the one scene in Super, where Goku move for move, shadow box reenacts his battle against Grandpa Gohan, is easily outclassing any single scene from any of the other characters on this list (at least, the ones I've seen, which I admittedly haven't seen all of them.).

I can't give it to Luffy simply because he is joyboy. He was destined to make a difference to the world from the JUMP just like all the other people with D. in their name. Whereas someone like Naruto is kinda the opposite in the since that he had been cursed with the same tailed beast that not only killed his parents but attacked the leaf village, and yet still he managed to live with that burden AND befriend that same beast.

Ngl rob you missed on the jotaro v tanjiro pick. Yes, Jotaro is a very dominant character, and he pulled through a lot, but he couldn't always be there and a lot of his character comes from the want to be there when he can even if he couldn't. Jolyne is a prime example of this, he wanted to stick by her as long as he could but Dio's influence still had its hold on the Joestars. He used his resources to help Jolyne gain her stand and helped fight Pucci. He also tracked down Giorno and while Koichi failed the mission technically, it was more about Giorno than the overarching series. When the reveal in part 6 came around it let you see Jotaro in a different light. He started off as a punk with a heart of gold, and he evolved into an even greater person who will try to help when possible, even if it kills him. I do agree that Tanjiro did develop quite a bit throughout the series I would argue that his lack of impact alone is what holds him back. He needs help every step of the way and the other characters have a tendency to pull in for him, even Nezuko on occasions. God I never knew how much I glazed Jotaro until now 💀

Get Tanjiro out in Round 1 he has literally didnt change at all and he got carried by random power boosts every time He also never had to really sacrafice anything so he also never really went through a character arc that changed him as a person

Luffy is important to the story, but he is poorly written. After major events where he shows a thread of growth, he returns to being an idiot, not showing any maturity. His characterization can be broken down to; fighting guy, eating food, people believing in him, sympathetic, Pirate, reluctantly obtaining a powerful devil fruit.I think once he gets the one piece he should turn after the power gets to his head. In contrast, Soma Yukihira is an extremely well written character and a great mirror for Luffy. Soma attends a school where people have super human abilities to aid them in cooking, but Soma's doesn't. Soma simply just tries, and if he looses he shakes it off, learns from it and improves. He doesn't use the "power of friendship( or in literature deus ex machina) ", but the power that friendship brings.

I feel like you foccused on a subgenre which is "character developpement" rather than comparing how "well written" they are

luffy is not only that but he is so entertaining to watch, and is the only anime character that actually makes me laugh. Even if luffy was badly written he would still beat a lot of characters just based of how fun he is to watch.

How important the caracter is to story is just a thing in how well are they writen. Sorry but luffy isn't the only one who is in the middle of his verse, people like naruto are as important for the story if not more important, like he is the prophacy child, the only one who could end the circle of hatred( I may be naruto bias). I'm not complaining having luffy over naruto I'm complaining the way you chose the ,,better written caracter"

I've already stated why I think Luffy is top tier protagonist. He's consistent yet developed, but the development is so subtle you'll miss it. Look at his conversations with other characters.

cmon rob i understand that you love luffy but you gotta give naruto his flowers , my guy went from most hated to most loved and started off weak ash with no one believing in him. Where as luffy started off with control of his devil fruit and a nice upbringing, he chose to be a pirate where as naruto had to become hokage (so he could finally be appreciated and looked at as human) my guy got it from the mud bro, like cmon rob you know the story 😭

Naruto vs Luffy is really tough for me, as I love both characters. Either of them would be fine for me, but I feel like Naruto cares more about being Hokage than Luffy about being the Pirate King. I'm not exactly sure why, maybe because Naruto had a worse life than Luffy, so his only option was to fight. But like I said, either of them is fine for me.

Im sorry gon is leagues better written tham luffy i love op but luffy is a simple character importance to the story doesn't mean better character writing Gon is an amazing take on the simple mc trope his dynamic with kilua is nature vs nurture gon was raised the right way with a loving aunt and has a child like nature to explore but his selfish nature makes shows his true colours his merciless he can kill without thinking about it hes the opposite to killua who was raised by ruthless killers groomed to take lives at a young age and told to be heartless yet killua wants nothing to do with that life and gon represents his escape from an abusive family trying to make a monster they are opposites killua a ruthless killer with a good will nature gon an innocence child who wants to have fun with a more sinister nature Nature vs nurture gon is easily better written than luffy

Shonen, I don't understand why Tanjiro even made it as far as he did, beating Inuyasha and Jotaro as far as I'm concerned! First, as far as Inuyasha is concerned, you point out that Inuyasha doesn't stay on the ball when it comes to Kikyo while Tanjiro is on timing. HUH?! I think we need to establish that character flaws don't mean that a protagonist is trash. Plus Tanjiro, a demon slayer, literally sacrificed the safety of people at one point to even protect Nezuko, so I think that goes against your argument. Plus, Inuyasha's journey of dealing with him being half-demon, struggling to be accepted for who he is while he handles his past with Kikyo and defeating Naraku was more intriguing to see his growth and development then Tanjiro, while taking the loss of his family, had the conviction to save his sister despite what comes his way! As for Jotaro, oh man if I had this long of a paragraph just for Inuyasha, my Jojo fanatic brain would have an entire essay on how Jotaro is way better of a protagonist than Tanjiro. But to keep it short and everything, Jotaro had to battle against DIO who was literally the main threat to Joestar bloodline for a hundred plus years, and even after his defeat had to handle the chaos he caused over other generations! I know to a certain extent how much of a menace Muzan is for hundreds of years, but compared to DIO and his philosophies and ideals, Tanjiro is just dealing with a villain that caused him pain while Jotaro had to handle a much bigger threat plaguing his family. With that said, Jotaro moves on his own type of timing in which his ability to remain calm and cool under pressure to figure out a crazy strategy to defeat the enemy is what makes Jotaro an unstoppable force. Can anyone think of a time Tanjiro has shown to have the capacity to completely make an enemy like Jotaro did with both Dar'by brothers by beating them in their own game with using clever deceit and intimidation?! PS: I believe that Kenshin should have beat Naruto and Yusuke with Senku (moreso on Kenshin with Naruto), but I do understand where you came from with these outcomes.

character development does not equal a great character. luffy actually carries his own show just look at the popularity polls. other shows like naruto/fairy tail/boruto etc are carried by side cast. luffy didnt even have hate before gear 5 i swear i aint seen any one piece fan hating on luffy before that and even now its not even close.
