Two top models from Pickering and Shure from the early 70's. The two models were released at approximately the same time with similar prices. The main difference is in the upgrade strategy between the two companies. With the Pickering XV-15/1200E, only the stylus assembly was upgraded and the cartridge body remained unchanged from the original 1967 design. However, with Shure's V15 Type III, the improvements included both the internal cartridge design and the stylus assembly resulting in an entirely new cartridge with advanced innovations and technologies. Here is a comparison between the Pickering XV-15/1200E and the Shure V15 Type III.

Hello and much respect to Vinyl Translators for their love of cartridges and the willing to archive the sound to video, but one thing pains me and i brought this up before is the condition of the stylus and proper loading is ever considered. Another commenter noticed also, the Pickerings suspension didnt move and the cantilever wasnt aligned, not parallel to record, top that with possible improper loading and you have bad analog sound. Notice the Shures cantilever is parallel and perceived to sound better. Also all Pickering and Stantons brushes need to have 1 gram extra added to counterweight.

Suspension on the XV-15 1200 looks like it has dried out becoming stiff, causing huge distortion on esp. the start of the track. Notice how the stylus doesn’t sink or change angle on the xv15, causing the stylus to skit across the track. Compare to the Shure sinking down, displaying good compliance. I suggest you find a better NOS stylus with proper compliance and test it again

The cantilever of the xv-15 is quite different from the shure. Idk if it is actually is dried up or not but that it doesn't visibly move doesn't indicate that immediately.

The Shure V15 III had the top stylus version called Micro Ridge (MR) diamond shape, very hard to find nowadays original and still in good condition. Thank to godness I have one , asap I will post a video to compare the sound.

I still use the V15 Type III, Whe I find an OEM stylus that isn't priced higher than I am willing to pay I buy one whether I need it at the time or not. It outperforms everything commercially available that I have tried in today's cartridges.

Tracking force on the Pickering is way too low! That is what causes the extreme distortion. When the brush is used, the tracking force is divided over the brush and the stylus, therefor the tracking force must be increased.

The recommended VTF for the 1200E is 0.75 gram with a range of 0.5 - 1.25 grams. I set the VTF at 1 gram (with an extra 1 gram to compensate for the weight of the brush. 1 gram is well over the recommended 0.75 gram but still within the VTF range. For comparison videos, I follow the manufacturers recommendations for proper setup.

I was surprised by this. I have a Pickering XV15/625E and I like it a lot, however the Shure just gave the sound more body and vigour. The XV15 sounded lacklustre in comparison.

The 625 is good, but if You can find a 757s (stereo headrone) it's in own league. I have both. Never listen to the 625. Both are NOS.

The 625e stylus was the most common. But there was a 1800s too. That WAS the top stylus for XV15

what it is with a lot of theses things is they are quite old and so we think of them in a special way - oh yes also a lot of these things are different to the things we have now. but that not necessarily bad just not the same. that’s pretty much how it is it may be helpful to recall that back then we were going to the moon and wotnot…

You need to add and extra gram to the Pickering. I started with 0.75 grams and it sounded terrible and distorted, then I went to 1.25 grams and still it didn't sound right, I though there was something wrong with my cartridge. Now I use it at 2 Grams and it sounds fantastic, even just a little better than my Shure V15 type III with MR stylus.

XV-15 Sounded distorted and congested as the dynamics increased very noticable, while SHURE V15-III seemed to be detailed.

The V15 III has a much lower mass cantilever. That will make a massive difference in sound quality and tracking ability.

@@AceTechHD I have a NOS 757s, It tracks correctly. So I think this setup is flawed. Probably the brush. I don't use it. I could never get it work with it.

There is serious mistracking at the beginning, audible mostly with the Pickering and very slightly with the Shure. I think the Pickering stylus is worn/damaged and the record might be damaged too.

When I wanted to try vintage cartridges, I almost chose Pickering/Stanton but I'm glad I stuck with Shure. By the way, I wonder how do budget modern cartridges like the Ortofon OM5E and the Audio Technica VM95E compare to these high-end cartridges of the past

The OM 5 is so boring. It's correct but boring. OM-series starts sounding ok in OM 30 but I would not bother with the cheaper stylus in that serie.
@VinylComeback
@VinylComeback Год назад
@@henrikl1394 Unfortunately for me I haven't heard the OM series past the OM10 (I like it, but the Shure M97ED I use currently is objectively better spec'd). The OM30 could be a bit better than the M97ED due to the hyperelliptical profile, but it's *way* too expensive for what it is. For the price, I could afford a Jico SAS that would blow it out of the water
@AldellezCaputto70
@AldellezCaputto70 Год назад
@@henrikl1394 That's my experience too, got a record player with me from a friend that needed fixing. It had an OM10 on it. At the audition, my experience was confirmed. OM10 is very boring. Nothing annoying, but a sleeping pill. But a couple of years ago I listened to an OM40 in a Hi End setup and it sounded fantastic. I have a Stanton 681, which I believe has the same housing as the Pickering XV 15, and it's in a completely different league than the OM 10 even with a spherical stylus. And OM10 is a step up from OM5.
