It did confuse me searching it. rpx aka rpr is also pretty bad. Possibly more terrible is Porcelainmaid aka Joel, also because he has an unusual ton of popular friends and Collab partners and they all call him Joel, but you wouldn't know who that is unless you know. Morico, aka BatAtVideoGames, same thing, there are more. I've also seen some hideous names, but only being referred to part of it, can't remember from memory though.
"Sakura Amano? Nah those names are too common. Your VTuber name is now George." All jokes aside this is making me reflect a bit on relatability between branding name and design. Thanks for the insight!
Haha yeah it was a small thing that I noticed and thought it was funny but interesting since George is a very uncommon Vtuber name. Now I'm patiently waiting for someone to debut as GeorgeVT lmao
So My vtuber is "Solyset", it's derivated frkm the norwegian word "Sollys" (sunlight), but I really want to make a devil vtuber. Any suggestions on the design?
and then we have Infernal Beelzebub Anarchia Cruul de Apokalypsi, the Opposite of Divine, Prince of Suffering and Torment, Master of all Sin, Conqueror of the Underworld, and King of all Demonkind.
I think short and punchy is best. "Pavolia Reine" sounds like a fantasy novel and pronunciation may be unclear from text; "Kureji Ollie" works in two languages and is easy to say and remember
oh yeah, i always wondered if reine is not a common name? I always hear that it's hard to know the pronounciation, but for us ID bros it's obvious from the get go, so...
at first when I looked up my planned vtuber name, I was disapointed bc it was already a pintrest acc and cardd account for it..... but then I realized they were *my* pintrest and cardd accounts 😭😭
Just a side note at 4:47 Maria’s last name is Marionette not Marinette because she’s supposed to be a doll that turned human. (Sorry if someone already pointed it out) Anyways, really enjoyed this video :)
Funny thing about 4:08, there's an interesting story that Pippa's stream there involves. Essentially, the stream was entirely about making a fake food-themed vtuber corp using chat suggested character archetypes, personality traits and stream focuses, design elements, and names, and using NovelAI to create that concept character. Some were weaker than others, but they all had some unique designs and names like Mina Vanilla, Sena Bonbon, Dr. Lolime, and a couple others under the faux-brand FlaVR. However, instead of shelving them as just messing around with image gen ai, she gave her community free ownership of the designs right there, and they took off with it. Within 48 hours, community members were re-generating the designs to refine them, created twitter personas for them, and even started streaming with them for those who identified with the characters the most. Now, a couple of them are full-fledged vtubers with rigged models, just from this community project, and are decently successful while considering Pippa their artist mama.
Mysta rias always impress me since its so unique, memorable, and soundlikes "mysterious". Can't believe the guy really just came up with it on the spot lmao
This could be applied to usernames in general online. Too many fools forget that you can be literally anyone here, at any time. It's all about brand and consistency to people now... Personally my favorite vtuber name I've seen is Hakos Baelz. It's short, unique, memorable and it has a more shortened version, 'bae', which is used by fans. Personally, I have at least two different names on every different platform I use..
I didn't realize at first that she usually says it like "bells." I don't know if that's just the Aussie thing or if it's formally meant to be said that way
Must say, It's safe to say not this help for inspiring vtubers, but this videos will be pretty much the go to guidance in the 5 -10 years in the future. Thank you for all tips and lessons in a really fun videos format!
I've had my "gamer tag" username for several years now, even before vtubing was a thing! (Or at least, not as widespread. Not sure on when vtubers or pngtubers actually started) I guess in that regard I've been pretty lucky! I feel like my name is fairly solid, with great alliteration and flow, though in the past I did discover a company with the same name as well! Woops! Definitely going to look into some of these tricks and resources mentioned, though. Thanks!
Literally cackling about 7:27, Byte's one of my good vtuber friends and they're always reminding people about the double underscore. Massive shoutouts to Byte. Also, love the model, fantastic, creative stuff!
I used double underscore but found out that it could cause some problems with shoutouts and things because they'd forget there were two underscores. One time I got made a VIP but they made the person with one underscore on twitch a VIP instead lol. I just changed to VT.
When I used to be a Vtuber my name was what I based my model off of "Nevaeh Nova" we had alliteration and a descriptive meaning if you knew what Nevaeh ment (it's backwarda for heaven) and my concept was a Space Angel.
@@squiiji3D In latin america that is normal for us to speaks with our hands xd. It helps illustrate better our emotions as well the points or context we want to come across to the people but instead by words, we do it physically. It is hard for me not to move my hands when speaking. Greeting from Puerto Rico (the same island iron mouse was born)
I sometimes watch dino-themed vtubers named Trexie Saurus and Lopho Lee. My username was also from a hypothetical name I came up with, Shirakuma Konan, based on some wordplays of of Nanuqsaurus.
I've been thinking about this for ages tbh, picking a name is the hardest part atm about trying to get into VTubing. I think I finally found a good brand name that's free on everywhere *except* twitch so I'll have to brainstorm some more!
if that account is inactive on twitch youll probably end up beating them in search engine quickly. That's what happened to me. I just added an underscore to the end of my name
i feel combinig 2 words to make a unique identity is great, especially if you use a "play-on-words" like mine is Beelzebuddy as it is a play on words of Beelzebub and Buddy. Since they have similar letters, you can combine them to make a unique identity. My vtuber character is Beelzebub Hecate Satanas, which when looking at the wikia there is like... 3-4 results? but no vtuber that says they are BEELZEBUB themselves (at least a female one). good idea spots are within mythology, demonology, cryptology, and other sort of myths like that which are good idea makers imo.
It’s also okay to have a stupid reason for your name. I put goddamn “hewwo” in my name because I wanted creators I raided to have to say “hewwo”. I may be cringe, but I am free ╰(*´︶`*)╯
in my case, i combined my chinese name with my filipino culture, as mei is part of my chinese name and bhie is like an endearing nickname used for close friends (and also my family’s nickname for me) so thus my vtuber / cc name became meibhie which is translated like maybe. i love this username so much as it is me and suits me so well in all aspects and i will never ever change it. u can make a lot of puns from it too 🎉🎉 i did this because im half chinese-half filipino :]
@@yayamikiyou can pronounce it like “bee” so my entire name, meibhie, just pronounce it as maybe. and “bhie” , as i said, is from my filipino culture where people as close friends call each other that as an endearing / platonic nickname. there are other variations spelling it but bhie seems cuter to me tbh idm people asking me how to pronounce it, im getting used to it and i dont mind telling them how to pronounce it! :’) its a little icebreaker when i arrive
Not sure if this is a good time to bring up a concept of mine which is a "What if I became a Vtuber" kind of scenario. Basically, this Vtuber has a honeycomb and honeybee aesthetic and they go by "Drone Bee" (in all caps), after the drone bees in what I call the Beehive Hierarchy. I looked up some Vtubers with a honeybee aesthetic and tried differentiating my concept from others. Some of them have a queen bee motif, meanwhile, my concept has a motif similar to Amber Sugar Cookie from Cookie Run Ovenbreak. Either way, nice vid!
Ohh wait you are the artist that makes 3d pixel models! The internet is truly small, one of the vtuber kids I have wanted to commission one of your models haha
this is a good sign for my vocaloid channel (which I plan on eventually streaming music making/singing on, I haven’t posted anything yet but I’ve finished a few songs) because “cicada” is pretty notable and “cicadandaw” (cicada-and-DAW, because I’m cicada and I use a DAW, lmao) and I think this follows pretty closely with the tips you suggested!
I started the whole identity of my concept by choosing my name. Being a part of Pippa's fan company FlaVR {that was a funny surprise to see the original stream in the video} I choose my name based of the fruit caimito (Star Apple). With the idea of it being a fusion of 2 fruits with the concept of my model and lore revolving around being a chimera. Outside of finding myself through google without the Vtuber added to it I think I checked off all of the other boxes. Great video
Princess Elyriasiana sounds good, not in use and when someone searches it up, you can probably get the top result if they search for Princess Elyria or your full name.
I went with Vera Nika for my VTuber name. It was supposed to be a simple break up of the name Veronika. I went with Vera Nika instead of Vero Nika. I think it flows. . somehow lol. I have been having fun with it : D This is yet another informative video. Thanks, Squiiji.
Asked a friend what nickname came to mind for me and got something completely different than my current user so I went with it and added vt so I'd be able to have it on all platforms. Still have to make a pngtuber or something for it but I did make the design a while ago. Watching these videos feels good at solidifing that I'm happy with what I've done so far tho so thank you for making them
The intro is perfect because seeing the thumbnail, I immediately thought of vtubers I've seen who mash together super common japanese words for their name (coughcough yuki, hana, neko, momo, kuro, shiro). Please, there are so many more words out there to use.
Thank you so much!! I've been looking for resources on how to pick my name! The only problem is that all of my prospective vtuber designs ended up developing names and personalities on their own, so I've been having a hard time changing them lol
Absolutely winning SEO results with my name. Thank you France for forcing me to add something to my name. Plus, it fits the (eventual) bacillus anthracis theme I have planned for my design.
i'm so happy i came up with a short and memorable name that hasn't been used yet, not even by any regular youtubers. it's a name that means a lot to me personally, as well.
Absolutely perfect timing for this to pop up. I was having some doubts about my vtuber name and this really helped. Also proves definitely getting my data stolen, but oh well😊.
I think I did a good job with my name. Lowkey Loki is kinda fun to pronounce and it kinda reflects me (most of my content is kinda low effort and is really just me having fun). Yeah, there are a lot of people with similar versions of my name, but I haven't found any that do the same thing as me, whether it's the edits I make on TikTok or the gacha content I make on here. Even second name (on TikTok), The Loco System, is really good because I haven't found any other tiktokers with that name and it says a little about me (I'm a DID system and I'm Hispanic, hence why "Loco").
in my rebrand ive decided to call myself "Near" and going by nearlyvampiric as a username instead of vampiregoth since i have the struggle of it being taken by inactive accounts as well. my idea was that my new design is very lightly based off the batty slime from slime rancher and they're "not a vampire but nearly." (official description from the game) i guess i'm kinda leaning into the pun kind of name, i'm not sure how well it reads though. i just haven't seen many slime vtubers and i thought it would be a cool idea
I find it quite endearing. From an outsider's point of view, your username wouldn't come off as being a pun unless given context but I do like the idea. And nearlyvampiric is simple and memorable.
"My name isn't Perfect by any means [...]" ...mine on the other hand is! ^^ Hi! I've kind of lucked out in my choice of name in that in embodies a lot of what you talk about, and that I managed to get it on twitch and (almost) on twitt-- x (and when I search it, my twitch channel was on top ...just don't check the image tab). I probably won't get _as_ lucky if I try on other platforms, but I've found that a decent 'suffix' like what you're talking about is "Plays", ofc depending on what one plans on do with their content, but that's an easy way to still have 'your' name everywhere. Also, thank you for making these videos on Vtubing! I've been binging them and they've definitely given me food for thought as I'm planning my 'real' iteration of avatar, rather than the fairly standard vroid one I'm using atm. :)
It is because of this video that I discovered that my original chosen username of "Kindly Kobold" was taken by someone who streams and has a youtube channel and twitter, so I decided I had to change it. I chose Kaeru Kobold because I'm 1. Definitely still a kobold lol and 2. already had a pet frog with my persona (his name is Irwin
As someone who investigates wordplay in Vtuber names (for Hololive only anyway), they're done a remarkable job with all their talent names. Some of them are pretty simple, and some are absolutely difficult to interpret. I'd love to hold this discussion, but it's not relevant to the video's topic, and there's so much information that I had to house it on a rentry page. Granted, SEO is never a real issue when you have the backing presence of your corporation, website talent information and all. Because of this leverage in presence and popularity that they have, each talent is then granted a very meaningful name that reflects the individual design or group they're related to, strengthening their identity in the minds of viewers.
I just went with the same name I've had for years, it was never taken in any names or socials so it seemed like a solid choice xD people do have issues pronouncing it sometimes but it makes for fun interactions :3
my original idea was "Rika" which i would further on use as "rikachuu" but i guess it never stuck, then kaze kumori (which is now just kaze with a really not-used last name) i guess im yet to come up with something that makes more sense (lol)
A good way to see if your name is catchy enough before getting into content creation can also be by using it as your name in online games. Like I go by my character's name "Gobzie" and I can't begin to count how many times people have said that they like my name or how it reminds them of the anime "That Time I Got Reincarnated as a Slime" which actually did give me the inspiration for her name because she is a goblin. Short and simple sticks, especially when it's something the brain can relate to another thing you enjoy.
I used to go by Tiny Bishie because I'm tiny and Bishie was given to me by a friend because I was into anime and cosplay, but I'm Hispanic and after a while I decided I needed to change my name to something else and it took me a while, but I've finally settled on A Tiny Gamer, going by Tiny for short which I feel suits me much better. Also on some sites or games I'd try to type Bishie and get banned or told that curse words can not be used for a name. Even some friends I found out were afraid to tell me that they thought I was using a version of the word b*tch, but doing alt spelling to get around the censorship. Doh! When I encountered sites that had A Tiny Gamer taken I just added 'Its' before the A and that's worked just fine for me.
YESSSSS OMG ALL YOUR POINTS ARE SPOT ON!!!! This is exactly why I changed my name spelling from EOS to EOIS because I just couldnt get good SEO on it and even with suffixes everything was taken on platforms. I wanted a name that was available on Twitter, Twitch, Tiktok, and RU-vid (sadly instagram is taken smh) and with my previous username people kept calling me "Sely" cause it was EOSely (My name is EOS Elypsis, so Eos plus the first part of my last name) so I opted for EOISvt. Your video is so informative and helpful and I loved it!!
Fantastic video! hooked the entire time🤩 Okay in retrospect, I think I utterly failed with my name on just about every point you mentioned hahaha. WHERE WERE YOU TWO YEARS AGO IJI?! Love your channel, been binge-watching every video and looking forward to more of your stuff!
BAHAHA **nervously sweats** 😭 this made me laugh really hard ironically- loved how educationally informative the video was, and I hope people realise how much they can better market themselves in the future. If you don't mind, would you be okay letting me clip and credit the first 20 seconds of your video? I would love to use this for a potential video in the future :)
I was just thinking about vtuber names the other day! Thank you so much for the tips. Is there any chance you could speak on color theory and the psychology behind it?
i’ve been thinking about this even though i’m not a vtuber lmaoa, and i already have a username (reincarnated_angel) that i think is really cool but …. kinda boring sounding ?? i like it because of the concepts it brings, and it’s just very interesting imo however, i came up with a new name recently - Luronius, inspired by greek mythology (i was in english class making a myth oc on the spot for international week, very fun lol) i searched on google, absolutely NOTHING, which is fantastic. she’s supposed to be a social outcast who ended up giving her life away for the sake of others, turning into a fountain statue that provides water for all, a final act of kindness. it’s pretty punchy and flowy, i like it a lot. really considering this one but i’ve gone through WAY too many self-rebrands at this point lol i have also come up with another one, kuroni angele crofts, which come from my old-ish name ‘kuni’ from kunikuzushi (scaramouche from genshin 💀) mashed with kuromi (i’m. obsessed to say the least i have piles of merch) angele because i love the concept of angels, and crofts which could be interpreted as crafts or cross. (love both!!) i could use reincarnated_angel as a username/title with this as well. this is in the full name category for sure, and i’m undecided on this one because it’s unique-ish but again, kind of boring. really though, i’m horrendously attached to reincarnated_angel, and i even go by reinca for short - i havent got any professional advice, so like…. if anyone has opinions i’d take them into consideration ! 🎀 p.s. im really really into lolita and vkei and other jfashion stuffs,, and i aspire to make content on art, music and games 🏃🏻
Another great video! I defiantly fell into most of these pitfalls and am also still in one because my name Incinda sounds to close to Cinder and also is close to the name of a political group so I added NHP to the end meaning non human person.
Something I’ve noticed for myself is accessibility in creating a name (I’m less in the VTubing space but with usernames in general) My un is ObnoxiousAvian pretty much everywhere- but I have two close friends that have dyslexia and I usually opt to give them the name to copy and paste rather than writing organically because “obnoxious” didn’t end up being super friendly for that issue
For me i (kinda) won out on SEO because of username unavailability. When Meadowing is taken i use Meadowings. But Meadowing gets you nothing but in Meadowings i show up instantly
I dont think that many people did this. But once i wanted my nickname to have a meaning so i tried combining my initials and languages that i know. I feel like it really helped my nickname not being as cringe as it used to be
Thank you for this video. It helped me backtrack and think of a better name. Originally, had Selenus Solace on the table, but after a bit more thinking and Googling, I have thought of one that fits who I'll be once I start getting the ball rolling. Keeping the name to myself in this comment though because I don't want people snatching usernames from me as well as it'd feel self-promo-y if I said it here.
I have the advantage of making a username years ago, have it slightly change over the years and have it basically on every site that I used. and have it be quite simple so people can remember it and not misread or misinterpret. (and occasionly have people get reminded of an old anime)
This gave me more confidence in the name I have chosen. I went through a JOURNEY when coming up with a Vtuber name. At first I went the generic route and chose a Japanese first & last name which was similar sounding to my Irl name. I used that as my Discord name for three years before deciding I wanted to change it. But even after that I still kept choosing a Japanese first and last name. Eventually after doing proper research I narrowed it down to what I want for a name. - Something Japanese (Because I speak some Japanese and plan to further speaking it) - Something Unique Sounding -Something that said something about my character So I came up with "Iruka Adalwolf" It has a Jp name in it, is unique sounding, and the last name has/means Wolf which is my species. Although something I find funny is that my first name means Dolphin so in a way my name means Dolphin Wolf lol.
This was really interesting. I have my name partially cuz it's been my tag for so long it just feels part of me and have been working my vtuber-sona around it. It's definitely given me ideas for when I update my design in the future. ^.^
I chose my name back in 2022 because it was unique, fit with my vtuber character, and was only used by an inactive vtuber agency at the time. A year later, hololive released a Bijou and now I have to compete with the biggest VTuber agency in the world for SEO c':
I love making names puns, heck my user is a pun. I'm a himalayan rabitt named Hima snowdrift. Get it hima as in himalayan rabbit and Snowdrift as in the type of weather bunnies normally are around. I'm pulling a cyno, he's a charter who makes terrible puns and explains them when you don't get it.
I chose a combination of the gamer tag and pun name thing for my channel/branding based on the Pavlov’s Dog psychological conditioning project! Someone also interpreted it as ‘Pav loves dog’ when I was watching their stream/being active in their chat the other day…. Which is also kinda funny, because I went with a dog-angel person as my basis for my VTuber/PNGTuber design :3
Loved the video Squiiji! Names are always such a hard thing to choose. I remember changing my original vtuber name because it was hard to brand around it, and sometimes i worry that tentaclesareppl is too long and hard to read despite being more eye catching due to its weird factor😂
I can't decide whether I want to go with a gamer tag type name or a full name like corpo vtubers. I kinda thought about going with one name and putting Sister in front of it because I wanna go for a nun aesthetic, but I worry that won't be as memorable.
I mean, the name I currently have works really damn well with SEO, and having the names everywhere. The issue that sort of arises is that I'm planning on becoming a vtuber, and the name I have doesn't really have anything to do with the idea I have for it.
I’m sticking with my current name: Kogawa Yuri, because I was inspired by agency vtubers and I quite like this name! Even there are tons of Vtubers named Yuri, I wanna try getting myself out there as an aspiring indie Vtuber anyway! Thanks for the tips tho! :)
not a vtuber, just an artist who sometimes breaks out my hommade model to avoid putting on makeup when I have a deadline and want to stream to make myself work instead of check my phone or watch youtube, but username optimisation is def really nice, I love that when I google myself with my username I take up the whole first page of google results, it means I'm really easy to find, plus my username is two proper nouns so spelling is also easy for people
The typo thing isn't actually that bad! When I first made my name, Squiiji came up as a typo, but after I made my twitter and youtube Google stopped doing that "did you mean 'squeegee' instead?" thing! It only suggests something as a typo if there aren't many results for it, but you'd be changing that by using it as your name
So i am not a VTuber, i like rigging models as a sometimes hobby, but i do not actively stream in general or make content of the sort. That being said: the part about people usually calling you by the first part of your name NEVER happens for me. I prefer being called Fighting, yet everyone calls me Flower and i constantly need to specify that i'd rather be called Fighting, since everyone sees it as a suffix and not a first name.
I would probably use my current user as my name for vtubing (OverDuePaper) and just call myself Paper for short. Do you think this is unique? If there's anything I could do to spice it up let me know!
the "put your name first and anything else after or you're gonna be called that" struggle is real hating my past self for that lol at least I can immediatly identify who's familiar with me and who isn't
Yeeaaa that's why I mentioned it haha I also experience it to a degree, but I agree that it's an interesting way of knowing who has familiarity with you!
>Original name being JK Gameplays, derived from gamertag jk0jk which I often use >Call viewers "jackies", short for "jack of all trades" >Doesn't stick, but become "Jackie JK" >way too many vtubers named "Jackie", thankfully none named "Jackie JK" >too late to change name now because it will alienate the small audience I already have and make no thematic sense
Such a good video, provokes a lot of self reflective questions and I can see this being really helpful for beginner creators just starting out. Really like your style and the way you present information in an informative way that isn't dry or hard to watch. One thing I'm surprised you didn't touch on (especially with gamer tags as it's somewhat common there) is 1337-leet speak. Whilst it's probably not as common as it used to be and I can envision it being possibly seen as tacky, substituting some letters for numbers like a 3 for an E or a 5 for a S, could be a good way to improve SEO and name availability due to unique spelling. Although I could see issues with possibly hindering searches with memorability if people forgot that use numbers in place of letters that prevents them from accurately searching for you. Do you have any thoughts?
