Efficiency is one of the most overlooked "secrets" to speed for sure. Thanks Tom Hess!

Holy shit, brother... After like 25 years of casually playing guitar as a hobbyist, the first three minutes of this video made me question reality lol.

Very good point. I find that when speeds are manageable you don’t tent to worry about how you picking hand but when you hit your threshold you alter your picking hand position and your guitar position. I’m going to spend some time and apply this lesson and see if there is an improvement- thank Tom

Tom-I really appreciate your granular analysis of the physics of guitar playing. This is the level of detailed technical information that will take my playing from advanced to professional grade. Bravo for owning this aspect of guitar instruction. I predict you will do well with this. Cheers from Nashville!

Do you have a video talking about adjusting to wrist picking from too much elbow picking? I've been playing guitar for only like 7 years and I've gotten so used to fast picking with elbow so much which I realized is wrong and it feels awkward and slow trying to get myself used to picking with wrist.

Mr. Tom Hess! Thanks for this very interesting video. I tried to implement this new attitude of the pick. It was a bit unfamiliar at first, but it's actually more effortless at higher speeds. Where I still have problems is with the dampening of the strings. Does Tom Hess have any explanations for this?
@tomhessmusiccorp
@tomhessmusiccorp Год назад
Hi Chris! To mute the strings, I use my picking hand thumb to mute all the lower strings. Then I use the middle finger and sometimes my ring finger to mute the higher strings.

string gauge and pick would change things up?
@tomhessmusiccorp
@tomhessmusiccorp 3 года назад
I don't understand what you are asking. If you want to know what strings I use, I use GHS 10-46. And I use Clayton rounded triangle picks 1.26 mm.

Great lesson Tom Hess. Would you be able to do one on minimising fretting hand movement to increase speed or effective picking across strings from low to high e?

Glad you like it! :) About minimizing fretting hand movement, check out this video: tomhess.net/GuitarFingerTension.aspx . For effective picking, see this: tomhess.net/Make-Your-Guitar-Picking-Speed-Faster

That is the hardest thing that I have found To overcome. When you been doing large movements all your life it's hard to change it At 53 years old.

Bad habits are always a challenge to break, but it's always worth it and you CAN do it at any age. Here is the process I recommend: tomhess.net/How-To-Develop-Effective-Guitar-Playing-Habits

Sorry Tom Hess. just one more idea. Do you have a video about anchoring and the merits of that vs keeping the picking hand free? or thumb muting maybe. Just some thoughts ill stop going on now!
@tomhessmusiccorp
@tomhessmusiccorp 3 года назад
It depends on what you mean by anchoring. I rest (anchor) my forearm on the body of the guitar, so the weight of the arm goes into the guitar. I do not anchor my fingers on the body of the guitar (and don't recommend anyone do this either). That said, I rest my thumb on the strings to mute string noise (which also keeps my hand more stable). See this: tomhess.net/UnwantedGuitarStringNoise.aspx
@captainfreedom7182
@captainfreedom7182 3 года назад
@@tomhessmusiccorp Yes. I was mainly referring to anchoring the pinky on the body. I assume its okay to have it resting against the body though without any pressure being applied. Thanks for the vids as always!
