Hi team! 💜 Hope you enjoyed having a look at my (current) thoughts for next year's journal line up 💪 Let me know what you think about the journal head-to-heads we had in this one! As a side note, I know that looking at such a large line-up can bring up a range of feelings, but remember that just because I use a squillion notebooks, doesn't mean you have to 😉 Do what works for you! 🥳
I use my A6/pocket size notebooks as scrappy interstitial daily logging books! They are super portable and fit in anything I’m taking out and about with me. I don’t mind if they aren’t neat and if they get dirty. And then I transfer anything I want to keep to my daily journal at the end of the day (or week, if it’s been a bad week for reflection!!!) I think that sort of usage would pair well with the square notebook. As the portability of the A5 is why it’s my favourite. I don’t use my logging books every day, but they are always there to scribble notes in.
It seems to me you sound more enthusiastic about the square notebook to start the year... so I'd say go with that size! 😊 Also, what's going to have a "better" outcome for you when setting your goals? having freedom to do whatever on the journal or keeping it looking neat? Love your videos!
Honestly, I love these videos because it gives me that sense of "it's OK to explore and change if you don't like it." I started the year using 2, but I only really use the 1. My A5 holds my reading, everyday stuff, and monthly plans. I've somehow managed to use 1 for the whole year. I don't know how. My other one I started was supposed to be a self development journal, but it didn't really do any self developing 😅 so this video gave me some ideas as to what to try next with it.
Heck yeah for doing what works for you 👏 I’m all about trying things out to see what works, so I’m glad that these types of video bring that feeling 😄💜
Both! (Eventually lol) Since you are already in square, stay with it. Your last couple months have been experimenting with Dutch door/waterfall tabs, keep going with that! Then get into the A5 botanical after, or keep it in the backburner for another journal idea you may have.
Please go the square for your 2024 everyday journal! It's stunning, and I can tell you're enjoying the square shape at the moment. This is really informative, by the way. I have a gorgeous journal I purchased recently but can't use it the way I wanted to because the dots are very dark, and the paper quality wasn't up to the 160gsm quality I'm used to. I might use it for something else now, thanks to your lineup sharing. Thanks Jess!
I shy away from adding my 2cents, but I'm going to try to leave a comment. Love your channel and you inspire me. I would love to see a goals journal specifically and in an A5 book. What I have learned most, I need a very "pretty" and "useful" spot for all my stuff! I tried Bullet Journaling around 2015 and it just didn't work. I am in the "next unknown adventure chapter" of my life and your encouragement has led me to a new level of productivity and satisfaction. Thank you.
Most welcome! 😄 and thanks for leaving a comment, it's always appreciated 💜 Note taken on the goals journal 💪 I think I'm gently leaning towards the A5 for that one 🤔
I am very partial to the square notebook. It just seems that some spreads that would take 2 pages in an A5 but only 1 in the square. It is like a B5 but more unique.
My vote is for the square notebook for your everyday journal. You were clearly more excited about it. And you can always use an A5 for your next everyday journal.
I have been WAITING for this video Jess!!! Both Journals are gorgeous 💕 I would go with thesquare though. Let's go! I have started my spreadsheet and I'm almost done populating them... STILL POPULATING IT. My lineup consists of, Personal Wide Rings (Day on 2 Page), Half-Letter Rings (Weekly Priorities, Projects, Goals Values, Mission Statement, Ideal Day, basically a command center), Hoboniche Weeks (self-care), Long-term Collections (Your Fault LOL), Yearly Collections (Your Fault, again), 5-Year Journal, Commonplace Notebook, Brainstorming Notebook, Brain Dump Notebook (like an Inbox for every thought before I lose it... because my brain likes to play hide & seek with my thoughts lol). I am toying with a reading journal (also Your Fault lol) but I have been using & loving the CAWPILE spreadsheet so I'm not sure just yet. Thanks for sharing ~ Char
If you are loving the square, and you obviously have one, use it. You'll be excited to use the newer size, more ideas for others who like that size, and it's gorgeous. I bet you have plenty of washi to use in the bigger size as well. You always tell other to go for what they want because you can switch gears if you need, so take your own advice. :)
I am so in love with the map you created for your reading journal! It’s so fun to look at and the names you’ve given everything… also I just love Steve! He’s definitely my favourite!
I just have to mention, part of the appeal of bullet journaling for me was the ability to keep everything in ONE notebook. I know you’re not an Index fan but that was a major draw for me, being able to let my mind be squirrelly and put whatever I wanted, wherever I wanted, and be able to find it again quickly and easily. It is great for me to not have a planner, AND a journal, AND a budget tracker, AND a gazillion notebooks laying around the house. It’s all one notebook. Now, I did recently start a collections journal, because I do see how that can be useful as notebooks get used up. But, not having to use a dozen notebooks simultaneously was a big appeal for bullet journaling for me. So for 2024, it will be my “daily driver,” (of which ill likely go through 3 or 4) and my collections journal. Don’t get me wrong, I still love your videos, layout ideas, and bubbly personality, its just that this video ain’t it for me lol. For me it diminishes the practicality that the bullet journal was made for.
I’m all about people doing what works for them, so I think it’s awesome that you can do everything in one and have it work for you 😄💜 because of the way my mind works, and because a lot of my job requires me to make layouts, it makes more sense for me to have things separated. Otherwise I’d end up going through more than one notebook in any given month potentially 😝 I like that having things separated allows me to have a better consistency in terms of how frequently I’m filling up notebooks 💪 especially when it comes to my everyday journal 😊
I love the idea of a goals journal (a gojo? Lol) I definitely think I’ll set one up for 2024. As for your gojo, I think the 1917 would be good for the ability to brainstorm but I really love the A&O for the size and design so I can see why your torn lol For the everyday journal, why not start with the square since you’re loving it currently then do the A5 for your second one next year?
Holy Crap!! 15 journals for the year is mind blowing. I'm half way through the bullet journal course and am really struggling to work out how to fit everything I want to keep track of in one journal (which is what "they" teach us). I felt guilty, unorganised and overwhelmed by the thought of keeping more than one journal. You've explained your process so well and helped me to realise that a single bullet journal may not be enough. I'd really love to know what you don't use a bullet journal for (keeping track of appointments?). Thanks this was so helpful.
Glad it was helpful! 😄💜 things I don’t use a bullet journal for are: - Recording the time span of time-specific happenings (eg. events and appointments) - Money tracking / budgetting - Content planning specifics (eg. scripting, video sequence planning, etc.) - Household meeting agendas - Proooobably a few more things that aren’t coming to mind 😂
@@Chaos_and_Creativity it might be the official Bullet Journal course which is Bujo Basics & Beyond: bulletjournal.com/products/bullet-journal-basics-beyond?ref=1 🤔
I would use the square AND the A5. Since you do multiple journals for every day, no reason not to use them both at different times. Also, you can do a coin flip with the square being heads. If you find your self disappointed after the flip, then you will clearly know what one you actually wanted to use.
I think you should go with the square for your everyday journal, it seems like you're enjoying it quite a bit and are not ready for a change in size 😊 concerning the goal planning I am wondering if it would make sense for you to have it in a seperate notebook. I wonder if it may have a similar fate as the content creation journal 🤔 if you do want to try "outsourcing" your goal planning, you should opt for the "messy" notebook. If you like it and stick to it, then you can always change to a nicer one and if you don't find yourself using it too often, you won't have "wasted" a pretty notebook. Hope this helps 🤗
You should do the square! It's clear you love it and you have other A5 R&D notebooks to use for videos. I also love the square layouts, it makes me want to try it out!
Since it's going to be fall in the southern hemisphere, maybe the autumnal journal? I've already got my Weeks Mega which is my everyday carry/bullet journal, and I'll probably go through another four A5s of journaling and writing prompts.
As for every day jounal, if u don’t travel often - unlike me😂- square is a joyful choice and eye pleasing as well, but hard to pack so not recommended if u have you carry it along a lot
As your new daily journal, of course WE prefer the A5 one. But I kind of enjoyed you making layouts for the square one. Maybe we can give you one more go with the square 😂! And I'm looking forward to watch more about A6 layouts. Yes It is too small for daily use but recently I found this pocket size could be very useful for some other minor purposes!
I would absolutely go with the square for your everyday! It's absolutely beautiful and there will be tons of space to make your spreads and have fun with it as you go
Go with the square. And I know you do this for a living. But WOW! That's a ton of journals!!! I can't even keep up with a reading journal. I've moved all my favorite setups for reading into my everyday journal. My "long-term collections" will either go in the back OR into my old reading journal.
Ive never been able to to purchase an A&O notebook but there are two I pray ill be able to one day own. Of course the gorgeous reading journal you have, and the grey square book with an Inn on the front - i want that one to be creative in, having a large place to do whatever!
Both of those ones are from previous subscription boxes so you will probably only be able to find those specific designs on buy/sell/trade groups 🤔 there are some on Facebook for Archer & Olive specifically 💪
I'm still trying to be become more consistent in my journal usage and one of the things that keeps me interested is swapping books, so maybe this year i'll try to implement a switching system, where i can get the dopamine hit of a "new" book every month, but still use up my older journals
If you’re into the square right now, go square. If you change your mind during the year, use the a5. You’ll probably use both this year anyway so choose whichever makes you happy now and use the other later. Or don’t. You can get another square later on if that’s what you want.
I have 3 A&O turning up soon and can’t make up my mind either (thorn bottle, grey floral & black plaid). Probably will watch some videos for clarity or flip some coins. My supplies turned up for November coffee and have finished it in 2 hours, it’s perfectly gorgeous (& lots of extra pens?! 0.o).
I'm also team "go with whatever notebook you feel most creative about" ! I'm using A5, but the square is pretty close in size and it would be easy for me to adapt any specific layouts you make in the square. This video inspired me to think creatively about my own lineup for next year. Cheers!
This is so helpful! I think I am going to make a yearly and long term book. I usually just use sheets of paper and that is so much fun to try and keep track of! 😵💫 Thanks so much for the inspiration! I say go with the square journal. It is so different than everyone else and I have enjoyed seeing the cool layouts you make in it!
I think because Autumn is in June in NZ you should use the A5 first then use the Square for when you’re finished which will coincide with almost the beginning of Autumn and they you will have Autumn journal in Autumn (Fall is called Autumn in Australia and NZ)
June is more winter here (we typically consider the start of the new seasons to be aligned with the months, so autumn is March, April, May) 😝 but with that line of thinking…. Hmm 🤔
I adore those list notebooks you showed but I was unable to find them in any of the shared links. I’m probably overlooking something. If anyone can point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it. Also, square. Listening to the way you described each notebook, it is clear to me that one may be beautiful but the other is gorgeous!
Those lil notebooks were from the Archer & Olive subscription box from September this year, so they're sold out sadly! 💜 Glad you liked the description of the notebooks, haha 😂
I am looking forward to the 5 year journal video. I was thinking it would be fun to have one before I saw this and having seen your custom one, I'm liking that idea so would love to see how you set it up.
We do have a setup video on the channel if that helps 😄💜 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PVUQISP6pX8.html But the “review” video will come out in December 💪
I think since you know you are going to use at least two journals for 2024, go with both! Start with the square since you are loving that style and then you can step into the A5 in March or April as you complete the square. ❤
Jess: "I honestly don't know how they all ended up being green, but here they are" OMG, YES! I don't know when I turned into a pink girl, but it's all in my wardrobe and has crept into my house😂
I like to have my weekly spreads run Mon-Sun with a section per day, but also like to keep months separated. I’d love it if you could do a video that gives options for weekly spreads where the 1st is not a Monday!
I have a video about that! 😝 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--g-1j8_DhKM.html haha but really it's mostly because each journal has their specified use, and I don't use each and every one every single day 💪 There are only two of them that actually get used on a daily basis, while the rest are on an "as needed" basis 😊💜
What do you do with the notebooks with blank pages that you won’t continue to use? I can’t bear the idea of throwing them away, so my shelves are getting crowded.
I turn them into R&D journals where I can practice layouts or make layout ideas for videos. Otherwise I’d use them as messy notes journals like my brainstorming book 😊
Please do a flip through of your Reading Journal. Maybe I want to start ome to next year but I am not sure yet .... Also I think about to use a tomoe river paper notebook next year. What do you think about this? Do you have any experiance with tomoe river paper?
I'm planning on doing a flip through, so stay tuned 😄💜 Tomoe river paper isn't something I've tried before, but I have a sneaking suspicion it might not be for me 🤔 Just because I know I don't really like ghosting with what I typically do in my journals 😝 Maybe for a goals journal though I wouldn't find it too bad...
I am in awe that you manage to keep up with so many journals! It would give me anxiety lol, and pressure, so I keep about 3 where I use one on a daily base. Love hour explanations for the uses of them.
Go the square! But honestly though, this is the same issue I had with my reading journal but go with your gut and what is bringing you joy! The A5s aren't going anywhere anytime soon!
If you aren't bored and needing a change from the square by the end of the year then go square. You seem to be enjoying it. But I do think that the square book screams end of year not beginning of year just because of the theme. The A5 green notebook is a foresty green that screams winter moving into spring so for theming the A5 looks more aesthetically pleasing. If the square book vibed more winter/spring it'd be the square no questions asked though.
@JashiiCorrin Omg I even knew that, and just had a mental fart (I'm in Canada and just entered winter aggressively so I'm mourning the lose of fall). 100% square fall themed notebook for you over in NZ!!
I‘ve been thinking of putting my goal-related spreads in my yearly collections journal but a dedicated notebook might be worth considering 🤔 it‘s not like I‘d have a lack of empty notebooks 🫣😂 I really love the green color of the A5 and considering you‘re starting the new year in summer I think it would be fitting 😄 and then use that gorgeous square for like autumn/winter. Personally, I use 2-3 everyday journals, about the same amount of diaries, a yearly collections journal, a LTC journal and a „faves“ journal where I do spreads about my fave pop culture and music things… or like my obsession of the month lol
Both of the possible journals for next year are gorgeous, though I am more a fan of the dark green A5 notebook. The colour and design are just more pleasing to my eye. I haven't even started considering my next year's setups, let alone what I might need or want to start keeping as a separate notebook. This was an interesting video to watch though as it's nice to know what options there might be for keeping separate notebooks for.
I currently have four notebooks going on for different things and I was thinking about buying a fifth one for another thing. Honestly, after seeing how many journals you use for specific things, now I will allow myself to go for it :)
Such a satisfying video. Talking and thinking about how to use journals is just...mwah! Delicious. Thanks for a great video. Signed, a patreon, not youtube, team member!
Start off with the square, you're obviously more enthusiastic about that one right now! And then by the time you're ready to migrate to a new journal in 4 months or so, you might even be missing the A5. As for the goals, why not put them in your big brainstorming book?
Heck yeah for the square 💪 The brainstorming book doesn't have a very good navigation system built into it, which would be necessary for the goals work 🤔 The brainstorm book is very much just a "everything and the kitchen sink" type space for messy stuff 😝 so I'd kind of want to have my goal setting stuff separate and done with a bit more intentionality if that makes sense 💜
the list and common place go with what you said and for the and for goals i’d use bullet journal to enhance the simple layouts they provide to build upon the system as one already does
I am in love with your reading journal notebook pick. I tried to find that style, but didn't see it, is it an older journal? I love that it looks like a fancy book!
I've used the official bullet journal method bujo edition 2 and I did not have issues with ghosting or bleading. The paper is thicker than in regular 1917 (120 gsm vs 80 gsm). I used tombows and others pens. So maybe it will work better than you think? 😊
I say go with the square because you seem to enjoy it and that's at least part of why we do this, right? What pen are you using in this video? Thank you for the content you provide. I'm not nearly as meticulous but I've gotten some very helpful tips.
My everyday journal won't be finished by the end of December so I've decided to start a yearly journal so I can switch everyday journals when they are full and not at the beginning of the year. Other then that, I'm not sure yet. I like the idea of a reading/media journal and I've very drawn to the idea of a commonplace book but I don't know if I'd uses either enough to justify them.
Love the way you’re planning on using the yearly journal 💪 and totally feel you on the idea of “will I use this enough to justify this”, that’s the tricky part 😝
I think you’ve already decided on the square notebook…you just haven’t admitted it to yourself yet, lol. In any case, go with the square, as it’s a bit more unique. You can always use the A5 when you finish the square. 🧡💜
How do you (or did you before) choose the Yearly Collections vs. Long-Term Collections? Could these have been combined? Seems like you've got year-or-more collections spread across two journals rather than one. How'd you choose to make it two? I'm looking for your thought process specifically as I come to the point where I think it's time to start pulling some things out of my every day bujo and into a different form. (Yearly collections bujo? Reference journal that lives at home? Long-ish Collections? No clue yet.)
Yearly collections are ones that either track something for a year, or I want to “refresh” annually (eg future me problems which I want to “declutter” at the end of each year through migration) Long term collections I essentially want to keep longer than that 😊 eg a Wishlist which has had items on it that I’ve wanted for year 😝 or my swatch pages which I only want to draw out once To me, they work on different time frames (expires in a year vs doesn’t expire) 😄💜
@@JashiiCorrin I think at my current planning capability, things are either "need to have now" or "need to have every so often". If I end up refreshing the every-so-often pages now and then, that's not a big deal to me. I've only been bujo-ing a year now, so I don't know enough to be able to judge yearly vs. longer-term. 😅
If you're loving the square, then I say stick with it as your next notebook. Something tells me that by the time you finish the 2nd square notebook, you'll be ready to go back to the classic A5 style 🙂
Thanks for this video - it is so helpful! I'm still pondering my 2024 lineup and your approach and organizational strategy is giving me lots to consider! Thank you!! So appreciated!!!! One question for you -- do you ever consider spiral-bound notebooks? If so, any suggestions?
I only started journaling in 2022, but this is basically my journals… 2022 Book journal - Kenji A5 mottled brown General journals - Kenji A5 red (January to August), latte brown (Sept to Dec) I was new and thought I had to cram everything into one book. I don’t, as I found out, ha ha, so that’s something I learned last year, along with 160gsm being the best and if your paper is too thin you might get ghosting, which happened sometimes in the Kenji books. I still like them for practice books, though. 2023 Book journals Vol 1, January to May, purple A5 Oops a Daisy “Penny Doodles” Vol 2, June to December, midnight blue A5 Scribble & Dot “Dachshund” General Journals Vol 1, January to May, black A5 Oops a Daisy “Twenty 23” Vol 2, June to December, sunshine yellow A5 Oops a Daisy (their old style journal) Choir August 2023 onwards - didn’t start keeping a choir journal until then. Light green Notebook Therapy “Komorebi” journal, slightly smaller than A5. This one should last me well into 2024 as I don’t need many pages per month. May even go into 2025, possibly?! Travel 2022-2023, turquoise blue Kenji A5 notebook which became full in August. Next travel journal will be my orange A5 Oops a Daisy “Into the Wild” journal Inventory journal Black B5 Dingbats Pro “Bee” journal which I got this summer for lists and stuff. Pen collections, monthly themes for my book and general journals, Oops a Daisy monthly themes, etc… Still need to sort out 2024, but I know one journal that will be used as a book journal as it has a bookworm and pile of books on it!
@@JashiiCorrin It’s a turquoise A5 Oops a Daisy “Mark the Bookworm” dot grid journal, so that one is definitely for keeping a record of my reading. Need to decide which notebook to use as a general journal for the first half of 2024, though. Got a few to choose from!
Hi! 😄💜 I’ve got a long-term collections flip through up on the channel if that helps 💪 ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h9wX1KltvYI.html
Hi Jess! Thanks for your video you really became my Bujo reference in the last couple of years!! I love your current square notebook too, and the last A&O released is gorgeous and you seems super pumped about it, you should definitely continue with this format!😁 Though as a long term follower (not commenting a lot though, sorry about that) I remember very clearly that you used to have a goal planning journal and that it didn’t work for you … you transformed it as a R&D bujo if I remember correctly. Is there something that made you change your mind? 🧐 Why not including your goal planning in your yearly setup?
I was wondering who would mention it, love that you remembered! 💜 I’m hoping to take what I learnt from that last goals journal and apply it to a potential new one. At that time I was also on a regular 6-month cycle with my journals, so having any quarterly-type goal setting in my regular journal realistically should have been doable 🤔 I now have better reflection and check in processes set up so I hope they would assist with any type of goal journal. Buuuut there is always the chance that it ends up the way of the last one 😝
If you're loving the square journal, go with the square one. You don't know that you'll necessarily love it for something later on-the A5 will always be useful for something later.
@@JashiiCorrin I bet you could get some pretty amazing stained glass or floral themes in a square that you can divide so evenly. I know you've been leaning toward washi setups lately, but maybe the new year gets a doodle cover page design? Even picture frames and Polaroid themes/pages would love a square journal.
Yeah I think there's at least one other company that sells them 🤔 but they might be sold out at the moment. www.thejottingdots.com/product-page/artist-series-classic-olive-a5-square
I say if you're enjoying the square, stick with it. (Because if it ain't broke...) I am a person who uses what you call a "ginormator" journal as my everyday BuJo, so of course I'm gonna vote for that one for the goals journal. LOL How is a commonplace book different from your notes journal? I'm still having a hard time wrapping my head around the whole commonplace book idea, I think. But if anyone could explain it so I'd get it, it would be you! 🙂
Yeah I'm also interested in how it's different! From my understanding, a common place book is for any tid bits you find that you want to keep, so they might note necessarily be related to personal development or work-type stuff (which is what my notes book is really for), but I do also note that their uses are similar enough that it might not be necessary to have both 🤔 still musing 😝
