Picking The Correct Tattoo Needle?

Have you ever thought to yourself "How Do I Pick The Correct Tattoo Needle"?
In this video we will dive into the depths of my thought process and approach that I take to meticulously select the best needle configurations for the design at hand. I feel picking out the most appropriate needle configurations possible for the tattoo design at hand will add quality, interest and a better read on the tattoo.
For me personally when it comes to picking out needles for my tattoo design I am always considering multiple variables, allow me to elaborate. So upon picking out needles before I think about grabbing a needle I will take a good look at the requested design and determine first and foremost if it is even something I am capable of doing and or in my style range.
If it is not a tattoo I am able to do I will let the client know and why. When it is a style I am comfortable with I will begin to start getting an idea of what needles I want to use based off of the design and the lines the design has. So I am openly thinking about the readability and look of the tattoo prior to making the stencil.
So when I am making the stencil on the iPad I will use a line weight that I more or less want in the actual stencil. By inputting different line weights into the stencil from the jump will help me determine the most appropriate needle configurations for the design at hand.
I also take into consideration the actual size of the canvas I will be working on and the best needle sizes to fill the area at hand. I feel all of these fundamentals provide us with a foundation that allows us to make more calculated choices upon picking our needles.
I will list the needles I have used and do use below.

Dude I just watched the whole video...It was absolutely amazing! Thank you so much for explaining everything. As a new tattoo artist I will practice this technique over and over.

This is how I was taught to tattoo and on coil machines....my first teacher told me you have to have atleast 4 to 6 machines at all times set up n ready for thicker to thinner lines and atleast 2 for shading or color packing.....now with cartridges it's so so much easier especially if you own a machine that has adjustable stroke and give.....love this video man keep up the good work!

it was interesting watching this because as you'd speak, your voice would drift into the same pitch as the tattoo machine and it made it sound like you were on the verge of breaking into song lol. Thank you for the very helpful video!

haha Now that is funny! Prior to me getting into tattooing I was a sound designer/software developer. I would record sounds and turn them into something completely different. I would also record sounds and input those sounds into the software that I developed for music makers across the globe. I would say my sense of sound is 2nd nature so I very well could have subconsciously matched my voice to the sound of the machine. LOL I appreciate you and your support! Don't hesitate to reach out to me should you ever have any questions.

Thank you for explaining your thought process behind which needle groups you select for which lines on the stencil. I have a tendency of selecting smaller needles rather than are required sized and wind up egret it later.

Same, especially on fake skin. Any tips you've picked up since posting this comment?
@steelcityx99x

@@chrstofuchaos longer dry time between stencil application and tattooing. The down side is, after about 6 hours, they become really difficult to wipe off afterward. Seems to be a small “sweet spot” for each fake skin and the amount of time to let it dry.

All the needles you used on this sample would you use them on human skin ?
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 8 месяцев назад
That is correct! I do have a preference of what needles I prefer to use such as the Quelle and Stigma needles but all of the needles I have used in my tattoos on fake skin I would use on human skin. If I didn't like a needle I won't review it or use them on any skins.

I am currently practicing on fake skin. How are you keeping the fake skin so clean ? Mine is 3mm and it is so smeared compared to yours. I have been coating the entire piece with Vaseline and wiping off where I am going to work to keep it dry like you are showing but when I dab the excess ink it always smears and I have to go over it with the Vaseline to clean it off and it makes a big mess. I attempted green soap and a wipe out but the same thing happens. Also my lines are not coming out as dark as yours are. I am thinking I have the needle set to ride the tube and should extend it more but I'm afraid of blow out but I don't want them too shallow. What length are you allowing your needles to protrude from the tube ? I used a 3 round liner for an outline and I think it was too thin, I am switching to the 11 round liner for my next one and will go down from that point to get what I like. I am using Industry Ink the Black and Grey pack and also the 14 color pack. Are these good ink's? I ordered some of this Japanese INK that is supposed to be some of the best black ink around, Karu Sumi brand. I am hoping that it's just my needle depth that is giving me issues I will go deeper at least a little bit. Love the video's. Thanks for the help.

Just so you know there is no double 0.. 1005rl .. the 10 is the gauge and the 05 is the amount of needles.. The #10 is bug pin and #12 is standard .. so when you see 1005rl or 1205rl you do not reed it as 00. you read it as 10gauge-5needles the 0 in front of the 5 is nothing... so even though you see two zeros its not meant to be read like that... Also there is quit a bit of difference in bug pin liners to standard . Bugpin is quite a bit thinner line..
@DanielYuck
@DanielYuck 2 года назад
I’ve had this comment come in before. There is in fact a 00, when I found that out a bit ago I was taken back. I thought bugpin was #10 but I was wrong and it’s ok to be wrong. Bugpin is not #10. #10 is aka 00. Bugpin is #08 and below. A simple google search will confirm the same. Also the manufacturers who produce needles list it as 00 not bugpin from what I have seen.

I personally look for the smallest line abs use just that liner usual it ends up being a 12 5rl. Then I just stack my lines for bolder areas and I on pretty much every tattoo have a 10 bugpin curved mag and that's about it. Sometimes I end up just using the rl for everything
