#aircompressor #compressor In this video I cover what size air compressor you'll need for full size spray jobs. You'll need at least 5HP and a 60-80 Gallon Tank.
Hey, it’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. Today’s topic is all about Picking YOUR Air Compressor For Automotive Painting - DIY Garage or Shop Air Compressors.
In this video, let’s talk about large air compressors that you may want to look into for a complete paint job and an air compressor that is good enough for die grinding, sanding, and painting in your car garage. In this case, you will need to get at least a 60-gallon air compressor.
If you want to learn more about smaller air compressors for mobile repairs, motorcycle projects or single-car panels, check out a video I did recently.
I recommend a 60-gallon 5 HP air compressor if you are painting a full-size car in your garage or shop. You will need one that puts out at least 15 CFM at 40 lbs.
The larger air compressor you have, the more reserve time you’re going to have. You will have more back up volume to spray with larger air compressors.
What’s the difference between a single stage and a 2-stage air compressor?
A single stage air compressor has just one cylinder. It just pumps one time. It will take a longer time to fill your tank compared to a 2-stage air compressor.
On the other hand, we have different types of 2-stage air compressor. Check out a video as I show you a type of 2-stage air compressor.
Continue watching the video as I show you more about air compressors.
Now, here is the one that I have. I have the BelAire 5 HP 60-gallon air compressor. It looks like it only has one cylinder but in reality, there’s one big cylinder and another small cylinder next to it.
The CFM of this air compressor is 15.3 at 90 PSI and almost 16 and a half at 40 PSI. It means it is giving you a lot of air pressure pump.
If you are into brand names, Quincy is a pretty good brand and it is fully American made. Another is the Husky brand. However, if you compare it with the Quincy, it is cheaper but it is only delivering 10.2 CFM at 90 PSI versus the air compressor that I have. It’s the same tank size but the compression of the motor and how everything works is different.
If I had a second choice apart from the BelAire, I would look into Quincy and also the Ingersoll Rand.
If you can get yourself a 2-stage compressor, I recommend it. Although you can also do it with a single stage air compressor.
However, you have to look for an air compressor with at least a 15-18 CFM at 90 PSI. That’s what I recommend.
It’s Tony from LearnAutoBodyAndPaint. I hope you enjoyed this video and the information I gave you. If you want to check out good quality spray guns at crazy inexpensive prices, grab your Atom Spray Gun on Zoolaa now.
Talk soon! Cheers!

Daryl Stewart, No there is no upsell and if you purchase and become VIP you will be amazed at how much money he actually pumps back into VIP T shirts for you guys and Gun giveaways and weekly Pearl and Flake Giveaways. Im not VIP myself but I have been following Tony long enough and know enough VIP people to know. Tony takes care of his customers. He does a weekly live youtube video usually on Thursday nights where you can ask questions about anything. Also VIP support is very good at responding and getting back to you. Its definitely one of the fastest and cheapest ways to learn the Auto body and paint trade and actually get any questions you have answered throughout youre projects. FYI pay the full amount for lifetime VIP dont do the monthly. Its really legit and you cant go wrong!

Ultimately the only things that matter are tank size, air output measured as SCFM (Standard Cubic Feet per Minute) and price. Two stage is nice because it compresses air to 175 PSI (pounds per square inch) compared to single stage which usually compresses to 125 PSI. The tank will be able to store more total air (volume) if the air is compressed to a higher pressure, but at a given horsepower, 5 hp in this case, it will take the two stage compressor longer to pump the tank to maximum capacity. The Ingersoll Rand SSL5 that Tony pointed out is a singl stage compressor that moves a high volume of air that compares favorably to the Quincy brand compressor he also pointed out for less money (and maybe less quality). If you need more air than either of these two compressors can supply you might want to look at a 7 1/2 hp compressor or a screw type compressor. 7 1/2 hp really starts pushing the limits of most home electrical systems and may require a magnetic starting switch and a dedicated circuit to be installed by an electrician. Screw type compressors are capable of producing a lot of air, but they are usually five times as costly, which is why you usually only see them in industrial settings. Bottom line is, you want a compressor with a minimum 60 gallon tank that can produce around 15 SCFM at 40 psi and it’s less important if it is two-stage or single-stage.

*After years of hauling around a large,💫 **allabout.wiki/PORTER** heavy, loud dewalt air compressor (that ironically was advertised as quiet, supposedly 78dB), I bought this. Facepalm. While it is not ‘silent’, I find myself chuckling every time I use it, sparing all my neighbors the terror of my former compressor. I use for inflating tires, impact wrench, finish nailers. Absolutely love it. And I store it under the garage sink in a 24” cabinet. I paired with a coil 1/2”, instead of a my former 50’ 5/8” hose that I had to lug across the yard from the shed, unpleasantly uncoil.... this little guy is light and portable; just a joy. Impact wrench is still capable of easing lug bolts, flywheel bolts, crank pulleys... just allow for a tiny bit of recovery now and then.*

I would say yes for a beginner. And buy a LVLP gun instead of HVLP. That compressor won't be able to keep up for heavy DA sanding or die grinding, but it will work for small areas and then let it pump up again to do more sanding. But for painting it will work especially if you go with LVLP spray guns. My old 60 gal is only 11.4 CFM at 40 psi and I've sprayed whole cars even with HVLP. Just have to pause a bit to let it fully pump up or you can run out of pressure with HVLP. I wouldn't use it for professional body shop work, but for a hobby painter like myself it will get you started as long as you know the limits.

@nalentocha

I bought a use one a few months ago. I would definitely drain the tank and see how much rusty water comes out. If a lot comes out, and looks like it has never been drained in its life than I would probably pass. You could also pull the belt off and spin the pump by hand and see if its binding up or if it spins smoothly. Check the flywheel on the pump and make sure its straight. Best thing is to actually hear it run and let it build up from empty. Some sellers on craigslist don't have a way to hook them up so its still a small risk you have to take, but you can find some good used ones for a great price. .
@HankScott
@HankScott 5 лет назад
I would also only buy a used one if u could see and hear it run and pump to full capacity. I have a 30 year old 60 gal compressor and am moving and plan to leave it here, sell with the house. It pumps and holds air, and I've maintained it well over the years, but I can tell the piston rings need replacing because it takes a long time to get to full pressure (110 psi for this one.) So that is something you will only find out if you can see it in action. Planning to upgrade to a new 2 stage 80 gal at my next place, it's time. 😉

Hey Man! I’d recommend getting a 60-gallon air compressor if you’re looking at painting a couple of projects. It’s an investment. It will give you much more volume of air stored with at least 5-HP motor. Something that can rack up 16 CFM at 40 psi. Check out Dewalt or BelAir brands. These brands has 120v. Sandblasting requires more CFM than painting. The larger the orifice the more CFM you will need, and the shorter the amount of time to sandblast the same amount of square feet. The prep work is more important than the paint job itself.

Well that was a shocker. Your videos are so well done, your knowledge is excellent, as is your skill set, but...when it comes to compressors you talk about piston drive compressors and not even a mention of screw compressors, which are much better for any coating applications. Better quality air with a more controlled CFM output is a far better choice for someone seriously getting into automotive paint application. With your vast industry, I'm left wondering why would you not mention the other compressor options. Of course they are not really affordable for most DYI guys but it sure makes a difference for professional painters and shops of all sizes.

single stage, each piston compress from atmosphere, while 2 stage compress from atmosphere and other piston. single stage deliver more cfm than two stage air compressor (based on my own machine). i have pumps with single stage and two stages both with same piston size and running on same rpm, clearly cfm on two stage pumps air 1/3 less than single stage. the advantages of two stages is you can get cooler and higher pressure than single stage. if you need more cfm and using at low pressure such as spray painting go for single stage. if you need higher pressure with cooler air go for two stage but you sacrifice the cfm

Yes it will, you have to use a air back check valve in both air lines coming from the compressor's to the "T" fitting where you join the lines together. Back check valves here: www.amazon.com/Control-Devices-Brass-Check-Female/dp/B007GDXA60/ref=sr_1_8?dchild=1&keywords=3%2F8%2Binline%2Bcheck%2Bvalve%2Bair%2Bsystem&qid=1603738488&sr=8-8&th=1 The back check valves have a arrow on them and must be installed with arrow pointing toward the "T" in the direction of airflow. I also added a regulator at the output side of the "T" so I could adjust the air pressure of the blended compressors.

9cfm? So I can stick to a 26gallon compressor. That will deliver that amount?
@kleanbeatzsupreme3569
@kleanbeatzsupreme3569 5 лет назад
eusuntkiller Seattle tbh you would be better off buying a larger air compressor like 60 gal that pushes 13 cpm @ 90 psi. That is if you have a space in your home to put it. That would be more than enough to run an air gun and DA Sander.... however, if you are like myself, in which case, I don’t have a lot of money and I don’t have the space for a large compressor so I’ll be buying a 30 gal portable oil less air compressor that outputs about 5.1 cfm @ 90 psi. A 30 gal air compressor can be used with a HVLP spray gun, but you wouldn’t be able to use the compressor continuously. From what I’ve read online, a 30 gal compressor is more than sufficient for painting cars considering that when you are painting, you aren’t spraying for more than 15 minutes at a time... so a 30 gal compressor would work no problem... so that’s what I’ll be getting I think :)
