You can't be standing in the Non Volley Zone, that line that he steps over, and smash a volley. If the ball floated within his reach while out of that zone then he could, and would have snagged that ball.

Definitely not easy on the eyes but if you play, it is exciting. I would want to add that if they lengthened the court by 1 foot each end they would be more lob opportunities and that would keep people more away from the kitchen making the game a little bit better to watch. Because there would be more movement.
