If you don't mind a little constructive criticism, stand farther back. As you guage the pace and depth of the second shot, move forward to get in position. As you hit the ball falling down from the apex (apogee), continue that forward momentum for at least one step. You don't have to go to the NVZ each time but practicing forward momentum is a key part of practicing 3rd shot drops. If I see my opponent standing at the baseline, I try to return the ball deep enough so he has to step back to hit it.
@pickleballpick-apart9787

I totally understand. I always move forward. It's just when I hit 300 third shot drops, if I move forward every time, I'd be exhausted. Thanks.

Yes. Absolutely. I can have them come at me every 1.5 seconds. But, I just like to take my time and concentrate.

I noticed that! I try not to do that. I was falling back. Definitely not the best way to hit it!

I have to agree with pickapeckofpickles. You hit 94% of your first 24 3rds over the net and took no steps toward the NVZL on one of them? What are you teaching your muscle memory? I'd be reluctant to allow my students to stand back at the baseline and admire their 3rd shot, especially if they were hitting them with 94% success.
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 Месяц назад
I know to move forward. I was just practicing getting the ball into the kitchen. Hitting 300 shots and running to the nvz wears me out. I'm probably not as young as you.

@@pickleballpick-apart9787 Yeah...I"m only 73. I get not going all the way to the NVL, but did 1600 3rds one day and took a couple of steps forward after each one just so I would teach my body to stop-hit-move and not admire my shot. I forgot, in my first comment, to tell you what a great job you are doing with this site. I really enjoy it and learn something each time I watch...after playing for over 15 years and coaching/teaching for about 12. Thanks.

I admire and respect your polite response Rory to comments about your context. Obviously if one can’t execute a successful and meaningful 3rd shot why worry about moving forward? Moving forward is taught after mastering the 3rd shot consistently.
@Pickapackofpickles
@Pickapackofpickles Месяц назад
no forward movement, no advance after the shot, you are now taking a fifth shot from no better of a position, you should change either the feed rate or position of next shot so you could practice actually something beneficial like advancing to the net which is the idea of a 3rd shot drop or at least to give yourself a better 5th shot drop, you are off the camera behind the baseline for your 5th shot
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 Месяц назад
I get tired moving forward when hitting 300 shots. Believe me, I move forward in games when I know the third shot drop will land in the kitchen. Thanks for watching.

@@pickleballpick-apart9787I practice similar drills. Totally agree on getting tired. Drilling with a ball thrower allows us to practice without wearing our joints out running after errant balls from partner
