In this video, excellent play at the senior level. Just goes to show having a solid understanding of the game and having all the shots are keys to being successful no matter a player's age.

Rory - those players could really play. That may be the best video I've watched. Was a very interesting match to watch unfold. The lady on the winning team was extremely good in nearly all aspects of the game. I would think she is a 5.0 player? It also looks like the guy in red on the losing team is also around a 5.0 player. Impressive all around. Great video.

Lila Rawlings and Patrick Cote vs Brad Anderson and Kristi Dorman, all approximately 5.x level DUPR rated (at the time I looked it up). Neither of these teams metal'd in this event, but they all played well from what I could see. This was the AARP Champions Pro Mixed Doubles event.

great video, maybe it's the best that I have seen you post. Now at 72. I thought my speed would carry me against older people? what you run into out there are people over 60 that played collegiate tennis, played tennis for 30 YEARS, and started playing pickelball for 7 YEARS. They have their shots groomed, pericise, and wired. They are the 5.0+ players we see out there. you can not stay with them with a year or two of pickelball under your belt.

Excellent cross-court dinking there, a lot of small skills on display here that often get overlooked. I think all 4 players just need to make some refinements to their existing game and they will look much better.

A higher ball to the far team is in the sun. Lobs may not be a bad option as evident by the missed overhead at 14:59. Nevertheless, great play by both teams.

I enjoy your direction of various abilities etc, but I have to disagree with your comment regarding lobs. Lobs are becoming a very strategic shot, both offensive and defensive, try them when you have your opponent off balance or weighted towards the net while dinking, or a smash return etc. Pros and our club players 4.0 and above implement these technics regularly, and with good results. 😊
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 5 месяцев назад
Well....I'm working on a video right now and I point out how lobs fail more often than they work. And, they fail for three reasons. I'm just going to have to disagree. The only time I hit a lob is when I get a return of serve hit deep to me and I cannot hit a third shot drop and know if I hit a third shot drive it's not going to be effective. It's okay to disagree. Thanks for watching.

@@pickleballpick-apart9787 I like your videos….. but….. your recommendations are often contrary to high level and pro player lead seminars I’ve attended. Lobs are said to be one of the major trends in the game, and blindly heading to the NV line is far less important than moving there strategically. But do enjoy the format.
@929mmr
@929mmr 5 месяцев назад
I have been defending the lob for a long time with Rory but in reality I hate the trend. When lobs fail in his videos they are usually because the players are not good at it and use it at weird times. I am 60 years old with bad knees and can compensate for almost everything except a well placed lob. If it were practical I would outlaw lobs except from about 5 feet from the service line which would include the area Rory is talking about in his response. In other words defensive lobs rather than offensive. I know it is not practical though.
@user-cj7cd1zz6y

I play in the 3.5 70s in tournaments and lobs are more frequent than dinking.
@andrewmagracia2088
@andrewmagracia2088 4 месяца назад
I agree that his disdain for lobs has no context.. if a shot is practiced then it could be perfected. In tournament play, most anything goes, so lobbing against movement challenged; height challenged; overhead challenged players is a solid tactic.

@CWK090
@CWK090 29 дней назад
The important thing to remember is you will lose a dinking rally by giving your opponent an attackable ball. Don't do that!!! If you watch pro matches, most dinking is cross court and with the ladies, sometimes 30+ times before a speed-up. Pros have the patience to wait for a speed-up opportunity. As Rory pointed out in the video, the lady on the winning team attempted a speed-up when the ball was below her knees. That didn't end well. With a cross-court dink, the ball can cross the net high and still be unreachable for a return volley. If you dink straight across the net and you're a little high, that ball is most likely coming back at you with a vengeance.

@ChristinaSheldon-er7eh 5 месяцев назад
Do you consider all lobs bad? Is there a time and place for lobs?
@pickleballpick-apart9787
@pickleballpick-apart9787 5 месяцев назад
I don't. I think a defensive lob is okay if that's the only option. I play outdoors a lot. If the wind is even 5 mph, it can affect a lob.
@CWK090
@CWK090 29 дней назад
When playing outside, I will occasionally lob into the wind as it is easier to keep the ball in. I have the advantage. Most opponents, if they can get to it, will try to hit the ball out of the air and the tailwind will often carry the ball long. Lobbing with a tailwind often doesn't end well. I have the disadvantage as the lob is often carried out by the wind and if my opponent gets to it and hits it out of the air, the headwind will help keep their ball in. IMO, there are 2 times to lob The 1st is defensive. A shot takes you way out of position and you need time to get back in a defensive position. The lob gives you that time. The 2nd is offensive from the NVZ. Lob over their non-dominant side. Another technique is to lob over the better opponent, if in front of you, as he/she has to turn more before chasing the ball. The smart play is for the other player to turn and run (Call Switch) as the turn is less. You are not trying to win the rally with a lob. You are moving your opponent back on the court. Now you have the advantage. I see players lob from back in the court. That makes no sense to me.

The lady with the partner in the red shirt is short so to me a shallow lob over her as she is in transition space is winner. Also red shirt poaching should be dealt with via passing shots to that open corner like final shot …
