A demonstration of the base sound of both the K&K Pure Mini and L.R. Baggs Anthem. Both pickups are fitted in my AJR Swift dreadnought and were recorded simultaneously to give the clearest idea of the differences and similarities between the two systems.
Looking to compare playing segments like for like?
Here's a handy list of timestamps! The first times indicated are the K&K Pure Mini.

Hello everyone! Just a quick disclaimer - I am aware that these two pickups are not made the same, and the comparison isn't suggesting that they are similar, nor is it to show "which sounds the best", its just a case of seeing how they react in the scenario of being simultaneously demonstrated as they are fitted to the same guitar! I will add that the whole idea was from a suggestion on a forum. Thanks for watching!

The K&K sounds better than any under saddle pickup and it’s 1/3 the price of the Anthem. I’m thinking K&K into my HX Stomp should be fine for any gig. 😄

I wanted my D-28 Marquis amplified but to still have the acoustic sound. I went with a K&K Pure Mini but it was just too thin. I ran it through a Zoom A3 PreAmp and... Wow! Love it. Get the K&K sound wheel.

I have both the K&K, and the Anthem. Unless you're tone deaf, there's really no comparison. The K&K is fine, if you're in a band situation. If you do a lot of solo or two piece, go with the Anthem.

I have set up my guitar with a K&K pure mini and a Fishman Blackstack magnetic.. these two signals go into a 2 channel pr amp (Radial PZ Pro) so if the room requires more live sound i can blend more of the K&K , if the room is too loud and too lively i will blend more of the Blackstack Magnetic . I run all FX and boost through the Magnetic pickup. I have been extremely happy with the set up so far. I don’t feel there is actually one pickup that does it all .. i will always use a 2 pickup system from here on. Great Video , Great playing thank you

I had to listen to this over again. I got so carried away enjoying your playing Matt I forgot about making comparisons. I would take a while before I understood the technical side of it. It's a great sounding guitar. Unusual design too. Cool T-Shirt as well, do the yellow buttons move around to make different chords? Second time around second piece was softer, more mellow. If I was hearing correctly. I liked both that would suit different moods.

Hmm... i didn’t particularly like either pickup sound here but I guess anthem sounds better. I finally found a system I like which is the K&K Trinity installed in my Martin OM28 combined with Grace Audio Felix preamp to blend the pickup with mic.

I’ll admit that in isolation neither pickup is particularly spectacular, especially when demoed with a dry tone direct to an audio interface as shown here! The two blended through an appropriate amp do sound much more impressive and “together” for want of a better phrase. The trinity is very good, agreed!

I have been impressed with both at gig volume to be honest - I'd say that if more of the mic is blended in and no feedback buster (or the equivalent sound hole covering) is used, the Anthem presents a little more feedback, but both have been excellent for me.

Hello! In your opinion, did the anthem change the acoustic sound of your guitar. I’m about to install one in my 00028.

Hi! I’ll be honest, the guitar had the anthem fitted from the very beginning so I can’t say exactly, but the builder did say that he liked the anthem as he felt it didn’t interfere with the acoustic properties as some pickups can! I have had experiences in the past where a pickup or indeed preamp seemed to radically change things, but I’m assured that the anthem isn’t in that category. My Swift certainly doesn’t feel in any way “suppressed”.

Hi, You’re comparing a single source pickup to a blended dual source pickup. I think it would have been more fare and pertinent to compare the anthem to the K&K power mix pure mini system or the trinity pro.

Thanks for the comment! I knew at the time that the comparison is pretty much a classic apples and oranges affair but it had been requested on a forum as the two pickups are fitted to my Swift. With this guitar I was able to literally record all of the playing once and evaluate both tracks, giving a genuine A/B. How many reviews do we see where the player clearly prefers one sound and ends up playing more clearly and interestingly with their preference?! It would be apposite to compare two much more alike pickups, possibly I will look into that in the future! Thanks again.

No preamp? Man I’m debating on buying the K and K, and putting it in a Taylor 214 which does not have a pick up, the question is whether I should just hold out and wait to find a tailor with the expression to system or install this pick up, I guess it’s going to run me at least 150 for installation plus if I want to buy the hundred dollar preamp

No preamp on board my Swift, and it sounds surprisingly good, even direct into an audio interface or PA! I don't run into a separate preamp for recording/live performance, just straight into my Laney A1+, but then I have the two pickups so I am afforded balance through the two. It would possibly be worth going into something like an L.R. Baggs Venue or Session for more sculpting possibilities. I also use a Fishman Rare Earth blend on my Faith which is great, particularly if you are into the modern percussive style.

@@MattMarriott Hmm good suggestion. I actually just played a guitar with a K&K yesterday and ya it sounded really true to tone. I was impressed! It was an old Yamaha FG160- Kinda was on a kick to get an old 150 or 160, but decided against it, they're cool, just a lil outdated necks for me... I've been between the K&K or the LR Baggs Anthem SL. I'll have to look into those other ones... cause I do want to get into some percussion playing on the guitar too with body tapping. THx for the reply!

Which system of the two produces less feedback? could the k & k be more convenient to use to play in a band?

So far I’ve found both pickups to be very feedback resistant with my setup (often a Laney A1+ into a 300w PA) though I would normally have a feedback buster in the sound hole for extra protection! Of the two, arguably the K&K is less likely to cause issues, particularly as you don’t need to use the extra gain to push it as you may with the anthem.

Nice video but I think you gave slightly misleading information about gain. A 7 or 8dB difference in levels is really not an issue. Any good setup (live or studio) can handle that. And you will end up with more noise from whichever pickup's had the worst signal to noise ratio. And you should never have clipping, if the person setting the gain structure knows what they are doing. That guitar, and your playing, sound fantastic. All the very best.

Thanks for the comment! I agree that the K&K is certainly much "toppier" and has a certain metallic edge at times. I have to say I would rarely use just one of the pickups in a live setting, the blend seems to give the best overall character.
