What I would like to see: A to B to C comparison charts. And simplified. Alnico 5 pole, single pole, 1000 winds, start at 36 and end at 46, 10 single pole pickups with their full frequency response charted so they can be viewed and heard and compared. For me, that is the only way to really understand the impact of wire diameters. Then go into changing the poles with the range of Alnico mixes. Then the same gauges but a heavier insulation. Also 500 and 1500 wound single poles. Maybe 60 total pieces wound and charted but it really is the only way to look, see and understand where the impacts are and what they are doing. It can even get more complicated too. 500 turns of #42, tape layer, 500 turns of #46 (and two directions for that, thinner over heavier or heavier over thinner). I have yet to see any kind of methodical breakdown on wire gauges in pickups, usually it is "this gives warm tone, that one breaks up sooner, this one has good low end response" and that just isn't science.

I fully second that! Its a shitload of work, but by changing 1 variable a time, you can nicely see how drastically the properties change and therefore see how critical they are.

I think sound clips with normal pickup vs wound with 38 or 40 gauge (same height or width of the coil) with the same resistance wbn, don't think that calculating inductance or ac resistance would be easy

I don't understand, you keep mentioning differences but don't say what the difference is? You say like eight times the coil dimensions are different but you NEVER talk about tone.
@patricklewis7557
@patricklewis7557 5 лет назад
ok, so it makes some kind of difference, but he doesn't say what it is. If everything else was equal (number of windings, wire coating, strength of magnet, etc) what would be the tone difference between the two wires?
@DylanTalksTone
@DylanTalksTone 5 лет назад
the smaller wire is a higher resistance so it actually changes a lot of things. There is no simple answer, but on the face of it, the sound would be darker with a smaller wire
@Bloodysugar
@Bloodysugar 7 лет назад
Interesting but like in other videos about cauting etc, you only say "it makes a sound difference" not mentionning witch. So it's a nice serie of introductive videos but it is quite useless for understanding the concrete meaning of these factors.

Like he mentions in this video, he goes into more depth with other videos relating to more specific topics, and does a fairly good job at explaining the math behind it. Do you really expect to understand something as complicated as physics and electronics in a 5-10 minute video?

I took out some old squire pickups wrapped them in 41 gauge wire until i could just put the cover back on them. I mean I stuffed these bad boys. They turned out to be excellent bridge pickups.

Coil wire aside....how about the gauge of wire used in making the connections to the switches and pots. Would different wire size here have much affect on tone?

No
@scottrobinson8590

Well no shit thicker wire will have less resistance and will make a bigger coil for a given resistance or a number of turns. How do these factors contribute to the sound? That is why I'm watching a pickup maker's video and not a physics teachers.
@FingerinUrDaughter
@FingerinUrDaughter 5 лет назад
this actually only makes a difference with people who wrap pickups like a fucking idiot, doing the whole "x number of turns" bullshit instead of calculating out the actual length of wire they need for the Re value they want. ive used everything from 42-14 gauge wire to wrap pickups, and as long as the resistance is the same and the magnetetic flux is the same, the sound is identical. wrapped CORRECTLY, the diameter of the wire has no effect on sound, only cost and quality. personally, i prefer to use something around 28-32 gauge, as it results in a much tighter wind that will never loosen up, or run the risk of accidentally snapping a tiny little hair thin wire when youre soldering up the lead wires.

@FingerinUrDaughter
@FingerinUrDaughter 5 лет назад
@@DylanTalksTone oh are you pretending you understand the science behind it now kid? kindly begin with your first attempt at giving actual explanations instead of saying buzz words like a fucking twat. as long as the resistance is the same and magnetic flux density the same, the pickup will sound identical to any other regardless of the gauge of wire.

How does inductance affects the tone of a pickup?
@rafsza
@rafsza 5 лет назад
It changes the resonance frequency of a pickup in dependence on the overall capacity (including the capacity of a guitar cable). More windings make not only higher voltage but also higher inductance. That is why the resulting sound of high power pickups tends to emphasize more low frequencies, which leads to muddy sound, than vintage pickups with fewer windings. There is a math formula to figure it out. Inductance forms the pickup sound and is perceived by human ears.

How does the resistance affect the tone of the pickup?
@FingerinUrDaughter
@FingerinUrDaughter 5 лет назад
lower resistance generally lends itself to a brighter tone, where the low end rolls off alot. anything below 6Kohms will be quiet and either require some kind of pedals to boost or just cranking your pre-volume to max, but it will be virtually hum free and almost completely devoid of anything below 150Hz. 8-10k usually sounds "natural". not overly bright or bassy, and usually little hum. above 10k you need humbucking style pickups to get rid of ground hum, or 2 single coils being used as such. anything above 14k will require you to turn the volume knob on your guitar down, or it will clip pretty much every pedal and amps pre circuit, have a metric fuckton of hum without a humbucking setup, a bit of a muddy sound, and your guitar will be playable like a bass. i like to go with a 16.5k bridge and 14k neck personally. i just use an eq to boost my high and mid end back up, and have passive pickups that have more bite to them than any active set ive ever heard.
