Pico Austria is an exciting day trip from La Paz, Bolivia, offering stupendous views of the Condoriri range in the Cordillera Real. At 5350 metres (the altitude of Everest Base Camp) one should be acclimatized before doing the hike starting at 4400 metres.
The entrance to the park is about two hours' drive from La Paz, passing farms and pastures of grazing sheep, llamas and alpacas. The in-and-out hike itself takes about 6 hours, on an established trail past lakes, streams and glaciers.
