There’s nothing quite like standing above a sea of clouds as the sun rises above the horizon! If there’s one place you should most definitely spend sunrise at it would have to be Pico do Arieiro, the third highest peak in Madeira.
It’s a tough one with 12km roundtrip and over 1000m in elevation gain, but quite safe with a well maintained path and guardrails where you need them. At last, we made it to 1862m above sea level at Pico Ruivo, and the cloud inversions were still surrounding us! To cut the hike short and not go the difficult route back to our starting point, we hiked the easy path to Achada do Teixeira and hitched a cab ride to Pico do Arieiro. It was worth every penny!
With our legs like jelly, we spent an easygoing evening scouting some cliffside views on the West coast of the island and enjoyed a sunset over the Garganta Funda with no one else in sight.
