Join me on my journey to the historical Covadonga Sanctuary, located in the Picos da Europa National Park. This site holds immense significance in Spanish history as the birthplace of the Spanish Reconquest, marked by the first battle in 718.
From here you can follow the path of the Muslim armies along a long-distance walking trail and visit the holy cave, church built above a waterfall, and stunning basilica dedicated to the Virgin of Covadonga.
Today, I set out to reach the Covadona Lakes on a 9-mile hike with a challenging 2000ft ascent. Despite the cold and foggy weather, I encountered friendly locals and made my way through the valley surrounded by soaring eagles and the sound of cowbells.
The trail then led me through old mining areas, where I encountered a pitch-black cave and continued the steep ascent.
The next day, I embark on a 19-mile journey from dawn till dusk through Spain's most spectacular trekking route. Join me as I explore this rich history and natural beauty, and share my experiences and insights with you.
