This is fantastic! I've been looking for a way to do this that's cheaper than buying the fancy Atem or the Epiphan. Have you seen a similar device as this but with HDMI inputs instead of SDI?
Great video as always John, thanks for sharing! Quick question - I'm looking to crop one of the video inputs (which I don't think the unit can do sadly). As I only need a left + right crop, I was wondering whether the window position can extend outside the full screen limits. If so, I could crop the image by placing the window outside the full screen output boundary and layer a second window on top of it to crop the image as I need it. Watching your video, I noticed the slider seems to end at the full screen limit, so I don't have much hope for this, but it could save £££s if that can be overridden in some way!! Thanks for the content!
This was great have a client that wanted this look and I have been doing such a hard way, and this just made it so easy. thanks for the video's keep up the great work.
Hi John, I just bought an ATEM mini to be able to do this but the Quad still looks like a useful box in keeping the whole chain on SDI. Can you crop the PIP image at all? We use the PIP for a signer and tend to square off the PIP a bit, you can do that on the ATEM but I haven’t seen that option on any of the video reviews for the Quad, do you know if something like that is possible? What would happen if you sent it a 4*3 from one camera for example? Thanks, Andy
I have just begun to enquire about streaming live video for my Drum school. It needs 3 or possibly 4 angles. I have a both GoPro session 4 and a 5 Black and think I can use these. I am thinking of OBS as the main software until I can afford to kick it up a notch, and I see what you suggest here. I have been recording using the 2 x GoPro's and 2 x Nikon D5300s and I used Cubase Pro 9.5 to record audio . Then SD import to the computer a big iMac mix and export the audio and edit together with film on Final Cut Pro X. I was hoping it might all magically work from FCP with streaming to Facebook or RU-vid but strangely doesn't.... ah well. Your videos are amazing so thank you its all really helpful as I am trying to watch the budget at the minute having put my setup together previously via kickstarter which was everso useful, but never got it all off the ground.
i played with the same idea, but i had no DMON-QUAD and no special demand for this kind of PiP... but we all like to play ;-) i think one frame delay is not a big deal - in these "budget area" we work in. did you come out 25p or 50p? in case of our cameras i found out that the delay is about 4 Frames from "light on the sensor" to SDI-Out (including the video assist 5 to view the image)... so its may be 2 frames... hard to tell ;-) but that the delay seams to be "some frames" means its a much shorter delay in milliseconds on 50p than in 25p ... cause its 2-4 frames and not xxx miliseconds... so using higher framerates like 50p reduces the visible delay ... only drawback there: ii only need 25p and in ProRes 50p is twice the space in recording... and more heavy in the edit and delivery... of course in our particular setup and demands... this must not be true for everyone...
Yeah this was more of a fun play project to begin with haha and I knew other people would find it useful or maybe even realise they don’t need it at all! Good thoughts on frame rates too
I have done research but it seam that on the contrary, it is not possible to control it with companion and streamdeck. It would be incredible ! but do you know if we can control the device other way ? Thanks
@@heretorecord Thanks ! I have bought a cheap one for my Atem tv studio. We will see. I guess it is less usefull when you have an atem mini pro (we'll receive an iso version in my School). Isn't it ? Or the possibility to use both PIP and KEYING at the same time remains something only possible with the decimator ?
It' possible with dicamtor Take a 16:9 signal as one source (with a pillarboxed 4:3 inside) and crop the black bars off into a 4:3? with 4:3 PowerPoint presentations grabbed off the presenters laptop with a decimator MD-HX . For example have 2 preset ( in decimator ) preset for 16:9 powerpoint and preset with 4:3 cropped black bar ?
I would like to find out the latency of the device to know if I could combine sdi feeds converted to HDMI to an Atem Mini pro and direct HDMI feeds. Do you know roughly it can be done or it'll be out of sync?
@@heretorecord Yeah, though technically you don't need a background input for your setup - you can key the background inside the ATEM without needing to feed it through the DMON. (Just upload a PNG with alpha channel and it turns into MP1 Fill and Key, which you can then set up a DSK to add.)
You can switch between presets but it will cause a black screen while it refreshes. So it’s possible to do it off screen but not live while broadcasting
Awesome video and thanks for being an inspiration for Streamdeck and Bitfocus as well. Do you know if with the Quad Pro you can crop the imagery as well as scale? If not do you have any suggestions? I'm looking to doing a PIP but have the camera shot alongside the powerpoint but to have the 16:9 camera more square to make more room for the computer imagery. Thanks!
You cannot do any cropping, sadly. You could of course use the ATEMs pip to do the camera part and then the Quad to do the rest. You would then need to use macros for all our switching as you would need to simultaneously switch off PIP and the quad source when switching between shots. If that makes sense!
Hm, I was wondering about the pip on the camera via the ATEM. However, the way I’ve got it set up now is the I’ve got the decimator creating the camera and computer feed pip and the atem is using mp1 as the “background” of that. Is it still possible to have essentially 3 items using the method you’ve described?
@@heretorecord Thanks, John. What I had in mind was using the ATEM and the ATEM Mini, which I already own, and not purchasing the Decimator. Can you set up a dual PiP with The ATEM and the ATEM Mini? I have a client that needs the dual PiP and I don't have the budget for a 2 ME switcher. Thanks, Joe
For all of my events, there is another technical person who would take care of projector. However I always run that feed through a Decimator MD-HX so in theory I would just sent that signal to the projector.
Isn't there any other solution to get it working better with your ATEM?? i'm interested on buying ΑΤΕΜ Television Studio Pro HD and DMON QUAD and i can't figure out if your sdi outputs are programmable, can't you send your cameras through Atem's SDI outpouts as a loop through into DMON QUAD???
With my ATEM (and they one you mentioned) the outputs all are program output and cannot be programmed to send anything else. You will not be able to loop through the ATEM as you mentioned.
I don't have an ATEM...yet... but couldn't you use one of the other video outs? I've used the first 1M/E and I was able in software to to Send out (I guess it has 3 Aux out's) just wondering if you could plug all into the ATEM and send those 3 outs via the direct outs and back in again on an HDMI input etc..?
@@heretorecord Is it possible to put the image as a foreground image somehow with alpha "holes" for the presentation and camera so they do the croping? It is easy in post or even in OBS but wondering if it can be done with a switcher on a budget? And what about with the Roland V1 HD? Is it doable with that?
I was just working on this myself. I might have to use a macro to crop the PC feed and overlay it as PiP on a composite from the DMON quad that is a background and a small 16x9 camera feed. I didn't consider that there was no crop. I foolishly assumed it could.
