Paramount lighting can be dramatic, flattering, sculpting.. but also sometimes challenging to achieve! In this video, I’ll show you some of my favorite tools to help me achieve picture-perfect paramount lighting.
To begin with, what IS paramount lighting? Paramount light, as you may assume, was named after Paramount Pictures movie studios, is a term used to refer to a certain look and position of the light.
Paramount lighting is when the light is placed directly in front of the subject at a slightly downward angle, creating a shadow directly beneath the subject’s nose. When the light is high enough, at times this will be called ‘butterfly lighting’ because the shadow under the nose may resemble the wings of a butterfly.
There are two main challenges with Paramount lighting; positioning the stand and adjusting with the subject’s movements. Let’s take a look at how to solve this.
(1) When the subject is facing straight on toward the camera, you’ll need to have the stand perfectly centered in front of them. What does that mean for you? It means that your light stand will likely be in the way of your shot and composition! The best way to solve this problem is to use a boom arm (or mini boom). This allows you to have the standoff to the side of the frame but still have the light directly boomed in front of your subject. It is also easy to get a higher angle of light for that top-down shadow effect. I recommend the Avenger D600 mini boom because it is strong, stable, and has a telescoping adjustable arm. Be sure if you are using a heavy modifier to add a counterweight to the arm to balance out the arm for stability!
(2) The next challenge is that when the subject moves, you’ll need to move your light. You are looking to maintain that shadow perfectly centered underneath the subject’s nose. If the subject moves even an inch to the left or the right, the shadow will move on the face. The best way to keep up with these movements is to use a roller stand. This stand on wheels is stable and allows you to easily make adjustments to the position of the light to compensate for your subject’s movements.
For this particular image, I used 2 strobes, a roller stand, and a boom arm. Let’s take a closer look.
Conceptually I wanted to achieve a traditional ‘old Hollywood’ look to the lighting so we used a Magnum Reflector as the modifier on the main light. A Magnum reflector is a large silver dish that creates a harder light source. Because of the size of the modifier and the texture inside of the dish, the light is hard but still creates a smooth result on the skin. I overexposed the face (approx 1 stop) to achieve that very high key and glowing result as was common in traditional Hollywood glamour photography.
Next, the subject’s dark hair was blending into the background so I added another strobe behind the subject. I used a 10-degree grid with the light on a floor stand to create a beautiful, subtle glow behind the subject. If I wanted to achieve a more polished look I could have added multiple rim lights and other highlights, but in this instance, I decided to keep a simple 2 light setup.

I like your take on shooting 30s 40s movie studio look. I was lucky to learn from the absolute master of Hollywood glamour George Hurrell. He taught me lighting, how to use my Deardorff 8x10 and even how to make soft focus filters. Lindsay thanks again and keep sharing the knowledge.

@@lindsayadlerphoto Lindsay I was first introduced to Mr Hurrell around 1976 by another legend of glamour photography Peter Gowland. We were at Franks Highland Camera on Figueroa in Los Angeles. It took a couple of years for him to open up. In 1980 Brooke Shields did a movie called The Blue Lagoon and I think it was Columbia Pictures wanted George to do a retro shoot and he finally agreed and ask me to assist him. What a treat that was.

@@zoomboy57 That's awesome. I've met a few from travels. Never Hurrell. One I knew from the new internet. Before it got big. A yahoo forum for medium format Bronica cameras. Had chatted with him for years on camera issues. Had no idea who he was it was just someone to talk about issues with. 4 years later I found out who it was. Pretty awesome. Still friends.

That's an excellent tutorial that produced great results Lindsay! It took me back to my days at Art Center College of Design in Los Angeles. Like Hurrell often did, we used Fresnel cine lights (Baby and Junior) for still lighting, shooting on 4x5 film. For this type of work, we'd slightly overexpose and overdevelop to help smooth the skin. I like how you emphasized the holistic concept of lighting, angle, wardrobe, makeup, hair. I see lots of attempts at this type of photography where the supporting elements are missed.

This was (another!) super solid tutorial. I loved the explanation of what you did and why. So many photographers get a little bit confused when it comes to the properties of light(ing), but your explanation shouldn't leave any questions open. Excellent job!

If knowing the final image will be in B&W, one option for removing facial imperfections, especially if a portrait of an older woman, it is possible to use baby power on the face. Darken the eye make-up and dark colored clothing adding contrast. My choice for a center light has been either a Mola 28 inch silver refector with a grid or a silver umbrella. With lighting on center usually I don't use a background light with white paper. Enjoyed your video. Thanks.

Lindsay Adler, awesome as always !! YOU Rock ! A few questions, please: (1) Is the Westcott 70 Degree Wide Reflector a magnum style reflector ? It's diameter is 9.5", I believe. Is this satisfactory to use ? (2) I don't think a reflector such as the Westcott 45° Deep Focus Reflector is useful in achieving this look or will it ? (3) Last, what diameter reflector is needed to achieve this look ? Thanks !!

"Butterfly lighting" was introduced and made famous by the Austrian-American director Joseph von Sternberg, especially in his movie "Shanghai Express" with Marlene Dietrich. Later on, they started calling it "Paramount lighting" to evoke the impression, that it was kind of an American invention...as usual. Hence, it is by no means a "Hollywood look", but rather a "UFA look", invented in Potsdam-Babelsberg near Berlin, Germany.
