"Nobody knows for sure. But people undoubtedly get feelings which are not explainable and they feel they're talking to God or they're talking to their parents who are long dead. I feel most spiritual when I'm out in the woods. I feel part of nature. Or looking up at the stars. [I used to say] I was an atheist. Now I say, it's all according to your definition of God. According to my definition of God, I'm not an atheist. Because I think God is everything. Whenever I open my eyes I'm looking at God. Whenever I'm listening to something I'm listening to God. I've had preachers of the gospel, Presbyterians and Methodists, saying, "Pete, I feel that you are a very spiritual person." And maybe I am. I feel strongly that I'm trying to raise people's spirits to get together. ... I tell people I don't think God is an old white man with a long white beard and no navel; nor do I think God is an old black woman with white hair and no navel. But I think God is literally everything, because I don't believe that something can come out of nothing. And so there's always been something. Always is a long time." Peter Seeger
yea you can stretch the definition to an absurd meaningles point in order to feel good about yourself. "I believe in santa, santa is the christmas spirit, it's the feeling you get when you unwrap a present from a loved one" ok, dude. whatever.
@@hanksadmireraynrandismyfav9853 "But the Bible is true", because the Bible tells me so. That sounds like a perfect example of bias conformation to me.
A song can't be a lie. I would call you a name , but FB jail is unappealing, so ... Ate those yellow jackets a lie?.. know for sure I get a pie in the sky when I die.
Heaven is true and so is Evangelical Christianity. But this song is great at talking about exploitive preachers who profit while preaching the Prosperity Gospel.
It's specifically about the Salvation Army trying to disrupt protests by the Wobblies. So Joe Hill said that they have nothing to offer but lies, while the unions offer real improvement. But those who sell religion side with money instead. A Greek anarchist whose name escapes me said that Communists are morally superior to Christians in that they don't expect to be rewarded for their suffering, but want to improve the world for others without personal reward, while Christians expect to be rewarded for their needless suffering, and only do good because their fear God. But of course there have also been Christians who sacrificed their very souls to save others from eternal damnation by torturing them into conversion. So it's not true that Christians can't be compassionate. God save us from religion.
