Yeah! The great, no-nonsense Pierluigi Collina! He's one referee I respected and he set a standard that so many referees today will find very hard to match, let alone exceed. Whenever he handles a game, you always feel like that game will never be marred by poor officiating, because that's how good he was. And those eyes! He didn't ask for respect; it flowed naturally from the players towards him. As far as referees go, he was the GOAT! I wish him well, wherever he is now.

greatest indeed. I remember when I was watching games that he'd referee how I felt so safe that the match will not be fixed while he's refereeing. I also don't think I have seen him making a single mistake, and I've watched him referee probably over 100 games. Not a single freaking mistake. He's always known when to apply rules, and when to brake them for the sake of the show and not interrupting the pace of the game. Truly the best referee that I've been lucky to see in action. Nowadays, only Kuipers comes close to Collina when it comes to authority, at least in my opinion. Coincidentally or not, with Collina's retirement football has started becoming more of a business rather than a sport, as well. 2006-2007 have been the last years that I remember football being played on the pitch instead of UEFA / FIFA headquarters, and - again - coincidentally or not, in those years many of the football's greatest have retired (or got old anyway) as well.

I remember him being sympathetic towards the Turks. He even played in an ad. Once Rüştü Recber (the Turkish keeper back then) gave an English player a flying kick. And Rüştü only got a yellow card. The Brits are still mad about that not being a red card. XD But to be fair in 1982 Toni Schumacher gave during the World cup an even worse kick to Patrick Battinson, breaking his ribs. And the Dutch referee back then didn't even gave a yellow card at all.

I always remembered that even without the luxury of the technology of today he was honest, fair and made the correct calls on nearly all of his games if not all. I knew that if my team was playing and he was the referee I knew that the game would be fair and well handled.

No other referee has been able to command the respect from the players he has. He was a firm but fair official, the players knew he wouldn't take any of the bullying tactics they use on other refs and were actually intimidated by his commanding presence.

Shame he finished his career in the pocket of corrupt UEFA and FIFA, disallowing Everton's goal on the champions League qualifiers being just one of his match defining 'errors' that came in towards the end of his career.
