When asked about painting with his arthritis in his latter years, Renoir said, "The pain passes, but the beauty remains." Some of his last paintings exhibit very vibrant colors.
What an era that was when Monet, Sargent, Renoir, Pissarro, Degas, Sorolla and some of the greatest artists were alive at around the same time creating timeless master pieces. In this clip though looks like age has already caught up with the great Master.
Janson appointed them.. Unfortunately. Hanson only chose European white men. None of them came close to the Russian painters of the 19c. I.e. Isaak Levitan. Henry O'Tanner, A black American painter. Ma Janson ruined art history, but slowly, thanks to Pinterest, we are seeing other terrific artists from everywhere!
One of the greatest ever, so much beauty in his work. But this is so sad, his hand already crippled. I believe students painted for him the last years, at first helping his hand hold the brush, then holding the brush with him leading, later painting exactly what he told them and precisely how to do it.
Wouldn't it be interesting to learn the year filmed? We thank you for sharing such a rare clip from what looks to be early 1900's. Such rare film footage is deserving of a 'million plus views' in just the next 12 months
I am a painter of 50+ years. The Impressionists were exactly that. They were one day painters who could not paint air as did say, the Tonalists or the Barbizon. Look at Monet's water lilies done in impasto. The essence of water lilies are their fragility. When personal style overrides subject matter, that is hubris. Compare Isaak Levitan to Monet. The Impressionists were a fad because they went against the Naturalist School that were rightly accepted by the Salon. Renoir was the worst of all because of his insipid pinks and baby blues. He was a feather painter. I. E. The Bathers. There have been many a forger of Impressionism. They each had a recipe that was sugary. Look at the Russian School that was at the same time.. My God, no comparison. George Inness said that Impressionist was mere claptrap. Janson and K. Clarke liked 19c. French male painters. And they never left Europe until the 20 c. You, obviously adhere to how art history has been taught for decades. I recommend going to The Hermitage and The Rijks museums.
I have been painting for nearly seventy years....! And I would give anything to paint like Renoir! Perhaps instead of denigrating Renoir you should show us some of your work!
This is incredible! Imagine how much it hurt just to hold a brush! It demonstrates that no matter how miserable, a person in his right mind just wants to keep living, working, and producing! I LOVE this. Thank you so very much!
My girlfriend has VERY severe Rheumatoid Arthritis for over 30 years, with the SAME hands as Renoir, and her feet are much worse. She was very surprised when she first saw this video how similar his hands, shoulders, and his movements are to hers. I can attest that Renoir coped and exceled in spite of his condition. It can be a very aggressive, deforming, painful and crippling disease.
The Impressionists were well daubed. Unfortunately, JW Janson made them famous. Only European men in the 19c. There were far better artists all over the globe, especially Russia. Lots of women in Scandinavia. The Impressionists, especially Renoir's work which was sickeningly sweet, ad nauseum. Look up The Hague School, The Naturalists, The Newlyn School, the Barbizon, The Glasgow Boys... All superior to the French insipid school of one day painters.
