Organiste exceptionnel, musicien accompli aux traits géniaux et fulgurants, homme délicieux à l'humour ravageur. J'ai eu la chance de l'avoir comme prof d'improvisation, de l'accompagner en tournée, et d'être son suppléant à Saint Denis. Un être exceptionnel, d'une générosité sans pareille. Ses rires, ses conseils, sa gentillesse et sa simplicité me manquent énormément. Saleté de cigarette...
Extraordinaire cette diversité sonore et harmonique 😊 et quelle mise en valeur de ce superbe instrument ! Quand à l’organiste, il n’est plus à présenter mais à féliciter encore et encore…..
Des enchaînements qui nous le font reconnaître les yeux fermés... Il a l'air si sérieux sur la vidéo alors qu'en fait il maniait la rigolade comme personne! C'est tellement émouvant de partager ces moments : merci de diffuser ces moments assez magiques...

Des années après l'avoir entendu dans ma jeunesse, où il arrivait à tirer d'instruments sans grande prétention des improvisations incroyables, je m'étonne toujours de l'intérêt tout relatif qu'on lui porte. D'autant qu'il n'est plus.

Hij zal de boeken in gaan als een heel groot organist. Idd veel te vroeg overleden aan de ziekte die begint met een k. Hij was een notoire kettingroker en er zijn grappige anekdotes van leerlingen en mensen die hem kenden. Hij zat vaak te roken tijdens de H.Mis. Gewoon terwijl hij aan de speeltafel zat. met peuken gevulde asbak op het bakstuk rechts van het manuaal. pakje sigaretten op het bakstuk links. Hij zat ook wel eens pijp of sigaretten te roken terwijl hij speelde. En als hij dan zn as moest aftippen of zijn pijp moest her-aansteken dan speelde hij even alleen met linkerhand en pedaal. aftippen... en weer verder :) Daar is wel wat van te zeggen maar met zo'n talent als hij moet dat maar gewoon gedoogd worden. Mensen hadden er toch geen last van met al die wierook. Opmerkelijke man, uiterst getalenteerd en een levensgenieter.

@@brucetominello325 La mélodie grégorienne du Tantum ergo et celle du Pange lingua commencent exactement de la même façon. D'ailleurs le Tantum ergo est un élément du texte de St Thomas d'Acquin. Mi mi fa mi ré sol sol la do do . . .
Wonderful doesn't come close. Another great loss to the organ world. So many of the greats have left us for the great Beyond. Wherever the Maitre is, I am sure he is relieved he doesn't have to arm wrestle with his beloved organ at St. Denise anymore. Monsieur, may eternity bring you nothing but in-tune organs, electric action and good acoustics. Be at peace.
He may have grumbled at S. Denis' console, but the fact that he was Titulaire there for so long proves that he loved the instrument really! Also of course, S Denis was C-C's first major instrument. To see a mature one, which IS convenient, try one of the many uploads of Dupont at S. Sernin...

Although altered from its Cavaillé-Coll disposition, is this the finest organ in Paris? The upperwork has always astounded me (I remember first hearing the instrument 'live' back in '92) - it's a staggering instrument. It must have been good for Pierre (RIP) to have a rather more convenient console to deal with than his home patch over at S. Denis. Of course, the improvisation here is magnificent. Thanks for the upload.
i heard the madeleine organ first time life in '92, too, my first c-c at all. sitting in the middle i was baffled by the directness of the instrument and the warmth of the nave's acoustics. maybe the city's most poetic instrument. the alterations thereafter are unnecessary imo - it was perfect as it was.

Le successeur de Cochereau ! Ses improvisations étaient tellement variées tant sur le plan musical que registration, forme ! Aucun organiste actuel ne le vaut !
This C-C (although beautiful) is not the organ we hear in the old Demessieux Franck performances from 1959. I had the pleasure of playing this instrument in 2004.
I heard Demessieux once at La Madeleine. I remember being stunned, standing just inside the front entrance. Was something done to the organ that has changed it's character?
@@charlesleyes870 - Yes, sir. There have been several refurbishments to this instrument. There has never been a 32' reed in the pedal, (which is not really needed). This console is remodeled and some of the swell stops were removed from the box and placed on an exposed chest. The only instrument (to my knowledge) with a Musette stop.
Most Brilliant. A document about french organ improvisation for the future generations....unfortunately the camera man utterly ignores the existence of a pedal keyboard. Should receive a well deserved punishment.
