Dutch painter Piet Mondrian is recognised as one of the most important contributors to the development of abstraction.
'Piet Mondrian is one of the most important artists of the twentieth century,' says curator Michael White. 'He developed the language of abstract painting as we know it today. It didn’t really exist before his practice.'
'Most people thought this was of the end of painting', says White.' We think about these paintings now as the beginning.'
'It’s a really interesting question he’s posing himself', White continues. 'Can you use colour just as itself and not to stand for anything else? If you made yellow into a circle immediately people start making associations with the sun or something like that.'
For the 70th anniversay of the artist's death, Tate Liverpool staged an exhibition Mondrian and his Studios, including an immersive life-size reconstruction of his Paris studio.
'A lot of people think about Mondrian’s paintings as just flat and graphic. However, here you start to see them as creating very dynamic spatial relationships. He’s thinking about his studio as a type of abstract space that he might be creating through painting.'

Imagination is unlimited power tool for seeing, perceiving and creating. As colorful as painter's palette.. from the very simple one to the most complicated mix. All of them - as beautiful as they can be, mixed or not. ❤

It's only recently I'm learning this artist's name, but I've seen his artwork all over the place. The simple lines and colors are timeless, they were done a hundred years ago, but they could fit in anywhere in our contemporary modern times. They're simple yet complex at the same time; flat out brilliant.

Those paintings are nice--agreeable--decorative. But I truly love all his earlier work--the full range-- including his abstract work he did prior to these works! If I had only seen his last works--the work show here-- he would never have become one of my favorite artists. It lacks the raw emotive power of his other work.

Completely agree. Mondrian´s early works are stunningly expressive.

it is okay, if you dont like this. I know art and thought myself into those concepts, but today I dont have a need anymore. If art doesnt connect to my life, it has no sense for me.

maybe it's not art that is supposed to connect to your life, but rather yourself who may take the opportunity to connect your life to art. art is not addressed tof consumers, but to artists. when observing an artwork, you have o become an artist yourself, at least for the moment - that means: connecting to art.

The language of abstract painting. What is it and how can I who knows nothing of it learn it? Narrative moving into abstract world - what does that narative say? Can one use a color as itself? Does it mean "to enjoy a colour as itself? Otherwise it is in the cans and bottles unused. Colors stand close to each other dramatically, Black and white are different but where is a drama? How to balance things so that they actually work unbalanced. Can you be unbalanced if you are balanced????? He is fascinated with "that area there" a white square??????? ...and how you read that as a definite shape??????? and it is really crucial that he don´t read the white as an empty background??????????? actually the whites are very carefully built up????????? they stand for something in and of themselves??????? we start to see them creating very dynamic??? spacial relationshis and where things then start to seem to push of the edge ad actually into our space????? We think about these paintings now as the beginning??????? I DEFINITELY DO NOT BELONG TO THIS PLANET

it seems all your questions are merely rhetorical. what they reveal, is that you never actually observed any of those paintings - your prejudgements stand in the way of making an actual observation. so why do you bother with writing a comment? if you have actual questions, come back. but your ignorance DEFINITELY DOESN'T BELONG HERE!

@@nikolausgerszewski2086 You are absolutely right. Me, together with my ignorance belong to another universe. It WAS a mistake of me to come with any observation to where I do not belong. I won`t repeat it I promise. There is no need, because my universe contains enough of everything for me, and likeminded ones. Have a nice day.
