Piezoelectric materials generate electricity when they are mechanically deformed. In this video we show how this can be used to make a simple circuit that stores the energy in a capacitor and lights a LED.
Capacitor is 20 uF @ 25 volts and resistor is 2.2 k.

I put a short bit of plastic line in a drill press and had it strike a peizo disk to see if it would trigger a transistor pulse motor. The pulses looked good. Takes the place of the reed switch.

In fact, making a stack will just divide the amount of energy you give by pressing on it... with some energy loss due to heat caused by the pression. Plus you'll need to press harder because of the added thickness...

Hi, I am a sound engineering student at Argentina. Lately I've been working on hydrophone designs for cetaceans sounds. I used 160kHz piezoelectric crystals and achieved an acceptable result for Narrow Band Ultrasonic Frequency clicks emitted by dolphines. However, I had a poor response in audible frequencies. If I want to use a hydrophone for audible frequencies, should I use crystals with a resonant frequency bellow, within or above the range of interest??? Why???

I am not an electrical or electronic engineer so pardon if my query sounds ridiculous. 1) If i use a Battery instead of a Capacitor will i be able to store more amount of electrical energy? what changes i'll have to make in the circuit diagram? 2) can piezoelectric effect take place in the sole presence of vibrations by Sound waves? If yes How?
@ludicscience
@ludicscience 9 лет назад
Saurabh Shinde 1) Piezoelectric generates very low energy. It is not enough to charge a battery. 2) sound waves are too weak to produce any significant electrical energy in the piezo.

Good day! Sir, Currently, this video is really similar to our project (thesis). Let me ask, "What is the mechanical energy harvested and converted it to electrical energy via peizoelectric disc"? Is it AC or DC?. **if AC what materials we used to convert it to DC? Overview of our project: Title: Acoustic Electricity Generator Objectives: -to design an energy harvester of audio signal for small battery-operated devices -to design a system that can harvest energy using piezoelectric disc (transducer) -to design a charge regulator and controller -to develop a battery-based charger Is it really possible to store the converted electrical energy into a battery? Also, how much is the current produced? We searched it, but find none. I read an article, 'Using several elements (piezodisc) that are mechanically in series and electrically in parallel is the only way to increase the charge output'. What does this mean? Should we connect the elements in series then,, don't know the electrically part mean. Thanks More Power! Yours, ECE students PS: Sorry for bad english, we are from PH by the way. Your idea will be gratefully appreciated. Do you have emails or fb sir?
@ludicscience
@ludicscience 9 лет назад
Jr Villaraza Hello, the piezo produces AC, you need a bridge rectified in order to get DC. As for how much current, its very little, but you can measure using a meter or by charging a capacitor and reading the charging time. Using piezos in series increases the voltage, if you put them in parallel you obtain more current.
