Pig Farming - Pastured Pork VS CAFO.
Today we are talking about raising pastured pigs vs CAFO hogs. CAFO stands for confinement animal feeding operation which is the conventional way that a lot of meat in the US is raised. Animals are kept in confinement and fed rations instead of being allowed to roam and forage like nature intended. Pigs in this case are raised in houses with up to 3000 other pigs on concrete slatted floors where they do not have access to sunshine or fresh air. Their manure falls through the floor and is collected in manure lagoons which can present an environmental issue.
We choose to raise our pigs on pasture. Here they get plenty of sunshine, fresh air and have the ability to live like a pig; rooting the ground, rolling in the mud and expressing their full personality. Our pigs are a heritage breed that gets plenty of exercise which leads to a superior pork product on your table. Pastured pork is more flavorful and is higher in nutrition. Pastured pork also leads to better quality of life for the farmer by allowing for a less costly startup and the ability to shift and change if the need arises.
We own a small farm homestead in central North Carolina where we are learning to raise food for ourselves as well as provide food for customers in the surrounding area. We work to raise animals on pasture like they should be and provide good, healthy, clean food that is outside of the industrialized food system.

I'm from Maryland but I grew up in Texas and Mississippi. I would live with my grandparent in Mississippi every summer. My grandfather raised pasture pigs he had around 200. So I guess I grew up on a pig farm It was my job to feed them twice a day. My grandfather was not rich, we had no tractor, but he taught me how to use mules. I hitched them to a wagon to carry the pig feed and O learned how to plow the corn fields. Field corn was feed to the pigs, and the corn was ground by a hand crank grinder. It was all hard work but I loved every minuet of it.

Thank you for your service sir. My opinion isn't much but if you got a few acres give it a go. Chickens are easy to feed and water. My grandparents raised chickens without fence. It wasn't alot but enough to supply family and friends. Chickens would normally go in the coop every night before dark. My grandfather shut their door every night. Pigs can be raised in a small area. You could get a fence installed and feed n water. Id say give it a try. You never know how you'll do. Good luck 👍

Hi Chuck, I'm Dario, farmer and agronomist from Bern, Switzerland. I'm trying to make nature restauration (although I hate this word) possible while also making money from it (otherwise humans would not do it). While many permaculture options that focus on companion planting (food forests... etc.) are great, I believe most of them cannot be economically and ecologically sustainable at the same time. I have experimented mostly with Syntropic Agriculture in my humid temperate climate. While there is tremendous potential, there are also a lot of problems. By far the biggest is how difficult it is to make such an agroforestry system economically viable, so that it becomes attractive for farmers. The reason for this, is that you have to be able to control which plant species are in your food forest. This requires advanced knowledge of ecosystem dynamics, that are as of now unexplored and thus unknown. Hence, I have attempted to shift my focus toward using Mangalitsa Pigs as converters of plant material. In that way, it doesn't matter so much, which plant species dominate, since Mangalitsa pigs can eat most. The idea is to create a highly-productive open-forest type ecosystem, which has accelerated nutrient cycling (pigs help with that greatly) and as a result VERY high primary production (total photosynthesis - plant respiration = net primary production). From what I've been observing, a three-layered forest should be possible, where fast- and erect- growing trees (such as poplar, ash, alder or even tree-of-heaven) could represent the upper layer, a few fruit trees the middle layer and a very dense ground-cover composed of nitrophilous plants with a short life-cycle and reasonable shade-tolerance, as the lowest layer. Luckily, there is no shortage of plants in that respect. I have literally thousands to choose from. Ideally, they would produce copious amounts of seeds, that can germinate very quickly, can reproduce vegetatively too, can quickly resprout after being defoliated and, if possible, has a fleshy underground storage organ along with being highly-palatable by pigs. All this to accomodate the soil-turning action of pigs. Since this is going to be really hard, I first have to understand what happens when Mangalitsa pigs exist within an early-stage successional forest. That's where your channel, and that of many others, helps a lot. Thank you :-)

I enjoy viewing all of the homestead and rural small farm videos, just as I do the confinement hog raising videos. I operated a very successful hog operation from 1977 - 1995 marketing between 850-1000 head each year. One year I had a field of wheat that had onions. I had pasture and shelter available so I swelled the onion wheat and fed it with hog supplement. The hogs absolutely loved the swelled wheat and wheat beer byproduct. I fed out about a hundred head from 50 pounds to market weight on it. It was easy to do. Take six 55 gallon barrels, fill it 2/3 full of wheat and fill almost full with water. Feed in large troughs. Always leave a little of the beer in the barrel as a starter. Feed once wheat becomes swollen, soft and fermented. Use a 38% protein supplement to provide a 14-15% protein feed. Works great.

Central Oklahoma here. Bought a farm 6 months ago. Got chickens and pigs first. We got a bred sow and she gave us 9 piglets. When we began i didn't understand just how much pigs really do eat. And if your first starting out feed is very expensive luckily we had a bumper in our budget but it costs us just about 500 a month to feed them. That's a car payment. So to everyone looking into pigs budget more than you think to feed them
