Gotta love a nitrogen fixer that pumps out a ton of food!! Plus they are a fast growing and good looking tree!! Neat trick with letting them dry and shaking them in a bag!! Great information, Mr. Dan!
I just planted some from the dry peas a friend gave me. I can’t believe that I planted them about 2 weeks ago and they have sprouted about 4” already! Can’t wait till they get bigger and start producing peas! Thank you from Orlando, Florida
Hi Florence, do you grow from organic seeds? I am in Edgewater. Can I start to grow in September? My sprinkler system is connected to well water, can I use well water to grow it. If you know then please let me know. Thanks.
Happy new year my brotha. I had to unsubscribe and resub so I can get notifications. I got you now man. Good to finally link up with you my brotha. Mad support. ✊🏽
I haven’t seen these types of peas since I was a kid when I’d help shell them. I never knew the name of them. It’s interesting how they “grow up high” on a tree like that. Another teachable moment my friend. Full wAtch👍🏽😊
I have two plants growing with gungo pea pods. I have four more started. I used some for my rice n peas for Christmas and everyone asked how it tasted so good. Its amazing despite buying frozen ones at the store , the taste is still way better. Happy Gardening!
I have not heard of the pigeon pea before. The tree behind you looks super healthy and happy! As you show your garden, I have to say that I love these trees! They provide such a nice shade canopy! Thank you so much for teaching us about all their health benefits and benefits to your garden. BTW, you have a nice fence too!
Pigeon peas have an awesome great nutty flavor. I’m Planting them for the first time and I’ll make a video to show how it is coming along throughout the year especially during the hot summer.I’ll plant them around the perimeter of my yard like you did to create some privacy and shade. 😎
If you ever had Spanish, Latino, or Caribbean Food, chances are you ate the peas in Arroz con gandules or Rice and Peas Thank you, friend ... Have a great evening
Thanks again my brotha for helping me out with the seeds only brings more food to the table for my tribe.. also great information good to know it produce plenty stay up!
The tree grows tall when in the right climate it’s the perfect tree . The yellow buds are pretty. I don’t have a lot of space in my backyard but will try to grow in the spring. Thx for the info and have a great day
I love the flavor of pigeon peas. I’m going to plant some right now here in South Florida Broward County. It’s mid August 2020 and hopefully it’s sprouts real fast.
This is exactly what I meant the other day. You bring light to foods popular in other regions. Will you be doing any prep videos on these peas? Cooking, storing, etc? Once again, thank you muchly! Many blessings
Hey Sis The dry peas can just be stored in a jar on your countertops and the green peas a zip lock bag in the freezer .. if you ever had Spanish food ( Arroz con gandules ) that's pigeon pea or Caribbean rice and peas . Pigeon peas growing conditions don’t have to be perfect, as it is an adaptable plant that does well in even the poorest soil and with only a little water. You should grow it ... If you need seeds .. let me know Peace and Prosperity 🌻
Dan, yes please that would be greatly appreciated. I have had some before, just didn’t realize that’s what they were actually called. This is great information and will be put to good use. My email is aliciaslearning@gmail.com
Great update brother Dan. I am sowing ours this week indoors. Hope to get pea pods this year up in our cooler zone 7 climate. Have a blessed week my friend. Rob
The pigeon pea was one of my dad's favorites for growing in his subdivision. I'll have to ask my mom if there are any seeds that I can plant at my farm. Thanks for sharing, Dan.
Dan Permaculture Food Forest This is a highly useful tree for the permaculture garden! Do you have any seeds? I would like to purchase some from you. Thanks for the video
You may call it a different name Pigeon peas are also known as Thuvarai, Red Gram in India, Arhur or Toor dal in Hindi, and as Thuvaram Paruppu in Tamil
Hi! I grow pigeon peas in an area where I keep bees. They bloom at just the right time to get my bees past dearth (period when pollen is in short supply) in my area of west central Florida.
I’ve heard of pigeon peas, but I didn’t know the peas actually grow on a tree. You’ve given some great information. Unfortunately, I can’t grow them in my area because the tree would freeze. I read the tree lived about five years and will grow between six to twelve feet tall. Maybe I’ll try growing it in a container. In my greenhouse during the winter. Where did you purchase the original seeds? Thanks for sharing.
You can grow it in Texas as annual or Perennial in the greenhouse ....the plant /tree is hardy for temp high 20s The pea seeds contain a large amount of protein and amino acids ... Perfect for canning too Thank you so much, Ms Cheryl 🌺
You can grow it as an annual, The flowers attract bees. Can also be frequently pruned for mulch, Leaves, flowers, seed pods and seed all make nutritious food for chickens
Awesome video man. How fast did they produce after germinating? I was thinking 4 to 6 months, but someone has told me 10 months. Im in zone 9b in Florida. Just figured I'd ask with all your experience with this plant.

Hi did you get your pigeon peas seeds? If not hey just go down to HEB, to the international section they are called "Gandules" sold by Goya. Get a pack for about $2.60 maybe a few more pennies, save about 20 seeds and cook the rest. Plant the seed in February outside or start it in a pot in the house plant outside in February, Pigeon peas don't like cold weather. I live in San Antonio, they grow very well here, it will take the plant about 9 months to flower the plant will grow about 6 to 8 feet tall and about 6 ft wide. One plant is enough if it grows that big however i would plant at least three plants because not all of them will grow that big. The plant will live for 4 to 5 years in the winter put a wrap around it to protect it from the cold weather.
