Pigeon Shooting - Decoying the Drillings

Join Sam from SG Shooting for a day Pigeon Shooting on the Spring Drillings. Sam was called in by one of his farmers to shoot pigeons that were hammering a recent crop drilling.
A 100+ day Pigeon Decoying over a very simple spread of 2 dozen half shells, a magnet and the FF6 Flapper. As the day progressed you will see that birds started to flare away from the decoy spread but Sam sorted that by bringing in the magnet and just shooting over the FF6, dead birds and shell deecs.

Nice video, you needn't have worried about the GoPro position, it was good. I noticed from the barrel cam that you seemed to be above the bird, yet had a clean kill
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 4 года назад
Thanks for watching and commenting. With the Barrel camera it's best of you align it when you put it onto the gun but I never do so that's why it's sometimes high and sometimes low. If I kept it on the gun all the time I'd take some time to set it up but it's always a last minute thing.

Good to watch someone shoot. Having never shot live birds, when watching the barrel cam, where are you trying or want to hit the bird? Was trying to understand from barrel cam. Does the ends of the cross hairs represent the envelope of the pattern?
@markpalmer7215
@markpalmer7215 4 года назад
Always try to hit the bird in the centre of the pattern so hopefully will get a head shot or at least enough pellets in vital areas to ensure a clean kill. So much like a clay shooting your giving it lead in front
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 4 года назад
You can't really take much from the cross hairs Mike as Sam just slaps the camera on his barrel and fails to calibrate it so it's now always pointing where he's shooting. The key is get up front which is where all the vital organs are located

Really good video . I enjoyed the running commentary, which reminds any pigeon shooter of the overthinking one has to do to keep them coming in . Only a small thought of my own, did the wind change when they started to veer away ,as I thought I seen the cammo net blowing in towards the hide ? I personally would have had a more open space in front in order to give them a runway in, and probably I would have placed to flapper further out towards the left hand side. Anyway it was a great piece of shooting skill and the misses were decent ,sporting birds . Nice to see the decoys really clearly on the bare soil. Hope you get plenty of days like these and have many more videos for us shooters in lock down. Keep at it and thanks for upload.

Lovely shooting ,I always try and create an area with no decoys for the pigeons to land but you seemed to do well anyway covering the ground ,It looked like the pigeons were getting to the edge of your pattern then veering off as it was covered by decoys ,they weren't actually committing to come towards a certain area or kill zone .I have had good days when I have 2 rotarys out either side of a V pattern and believe it or not have the pigeons coming right up the middle . Always helps having the wind in the right direction on those days though.It's all about trying different things as no 2 days are the same pigeon shooting.The FF6 is good though isn't it but my wings come off now and then and just working out a way to keep them on all day .

Thanks for watching and for the comment. Well Sam is a self-employed Gamekeeper and he has a 3000 acre estate (8 farms) that he leases over in Cumbria where he runs a Game Shoot and he obviously also has the Pigeon Shooting but he tends to let his beaters shoot there. I lease two estates (18 farmers, tenants and occupiers so it's a nightmare!) over this side of the Pennines and again have a Pheasant shoot but no arable so only Pigeons are coming up to roost but we do get close to 100 bird afternoon's....also shoot some good bags on Bilberry on our bit of moorland. Going down country onto the arable we have about 20 regular farms & half a dozen infrequent spots for Pigeons (although not all are exclusive to us) and then up this way on the hill we will have about 10 for rabbits.

Great video and good shooting under tough conditions. Any tips for pigeons that just won't decoy? Shot a few fields lately with newly drilled grass and there's plenty of birds but most won't decoy 🤔
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 4 года назад
Hard to say but the key is to be where the Pigeons want to be on the field and make sure there is a good turnover of birds. A lot of people get carried away when they see a lot of birds on a field but the important things is the extent of the flight in and out of the field, you need to see birds fairly constantly coming in and out of the field. If there's a lot actually on the field it could be that they all arrived at once and will them move on in one big group hence, as I say, look for that turnover of birds. Decoy wise I use 2 dozen Sillosocks, Magnet and Flapper, Sam uses 2 dozen shells, Flapper and Magnet. On a drilling we will often scrap the Magnet as you will see birds flare away. The other thing to watch on sunny days are the arms of the Magnet flashing in the sun so we have ours taped with a cloth tape to stop this.
@dansage
@dansage 4 года назад
What a brilliant response, thank you very much. Totally agree with what you say and when I'm out this weekend am planning on attacking a fligtline I saw this week with numerous flocks coming in and out and different time. Re the magnet, we too have had exactly the same issues with birds flaring away last minute. The arms are already covered in camo cloth tape so will be looking to remove that until there's a bit more growth. Also got a flapper on order. Thanks for the reply and ill keep watching the vids. My mate and I are going to record our first shoot this weekend so lookout for some banter 🤣👍

@RobertGriffinshootingTV

Yes, the crosshair is high. You are supposed to calibrate it when you fix it to the barrel but I just guess so sometimes it's high and sometimes it's low.

Nice video and shooting mate. Have u had any trouble with the police or did u call them in advance to let them know u would be shooting?
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 4 года назад
One way or the other we shoot every day as Sam leases a 3000 acre estate in Cumbria where he is a self employed Gamekeeper on his own commercial shoot and I lease two estates for Pheasant and Grouse near home....so 'keepering wise we are out all hours at the moment and it's not viable to ring but in any case we are "known" to the Police. Pigeon Shooting wise we range out over a big area, we do about 150 miles if we scout the lot so on some of those farms we might only shoot a handful of times a year and obviously our activities are not as well known so that could be a problem. We have phoned through on 101 if we felt there may be an issue but most places we shoot are remote. During the lockdown Sam has had the Police phone him once when he was at Pigeons (they had his number and vehicle from a 101 call) to verify what he was doing but all was fine. We carry in the vehicle a copy of our Business Insurance which is as a self employed Gamekeeper, Pest Controller and Shooting Guide, our maps, our leases, our farmer contact details, HMRC registration details and extracts from websites to verify genuine occupational need....just to be safe.

Should be in lock down mate your breaking the law
@RobertGriffinshootingTV
@RobertGriffinshootingTV 4 года назад
Incorrect on many fronts. First, it has been made abundantly clear that shooting for the purposes of essential crop and livestock protection is permitted. We have our SGC's and FAC's issued by Durham Police and if you care to go to the Firearms Licensing site you will see Durham Police have placed a note to confirm this. Sam was shooting in North Yorkshire and we discussed the matter with them some time ago and they requested a 101 call prior to shooting during the lockdown so they were aware and moreover they confirmed they have been briefed on the difference between essential crop protection and recreational shooting...the latter is not permitted. Second, Sam is a self employed professional Gamekeeper (Holm Hill Shoot) , Pigeon Shooting Guide (SG Shooting) and Pest Controller (Pennine Pest Control)....he is insured as such and registered with HMRC as such. Sam has an indisputable occupational need to shoot. I am a Gamekeeper (Stobgreen Shoot) and professional Pest controller (Pest Controller) and I am an employee of Sam's and named on his business insurance. I have an indisputable occupational need to shoot. There are some commonsense precautions to take. On the three estates we exclusively lease for commercial Pheasant Shooting the Police are aware of that and the daily need for Gamekeeping activity. Away from our own estates we ensure we have a clear text request from our landowner requesting that we shoot in order to prevent crop or livestock protection. We carry with us our landowner contact details and maps. We carry our business insurance, HMRC registration and extracts from our website and Social Media pages to demonstrate occupational need. In over 5 weeks of this caper and both of us shooting every single day we have spoken to the please via phone or email several times but only been stopped and questioned once and then there was no issue as we had dotted the i's and crossed the T's. Sadly to many ill informed recreational shooters out there talking rubbish but it has been to our advantage as we have taken on huge areas this spring following direct approaches from landowners who's normal "shooter" could or would not attend.
@roncook8491
@roncook8491 4 года назад
Hi but you don't have to prodcast what u doing during current times, all you doing is just encouraging others who just shoot for recreational purposes to go out and not follow government quidelines
